Lead-zinc-silver veins in the Chilete mining district in the Department of Cajamarca in northern Peru have been worked sporadically since the 17th century, but the greatest activity dates only from 1951. The ore deposits are in a thick section of andesitic volcanic rocks that overlie with marked unconformity a sequence of Cretaceous limestone, shale, and quartzite. The volcanic rocks form a gently north-dipping block of apparently simple structure. The Chilete deposits are quartz-sulfide veins consisting essentially of sphalerite, pyrite, and galena in a gangue of quartz and silicified and pyritized and sericitized. Wall rocks are calcitized chloritized, pyritized, and sericitized. The veins were formed by fissure filling, breccia filling, and replacement. Veins strike either northwest or east-northeast and dip steeply. They range from a few centimeters to 4 m. in width and the longest h...

The research is based geomechanical qualification of rock mass, in the underground mining works of the Asonambile Concession (Nambija Mining District), through the Bieniawski’s RMR system (1989) and the Barton’s Q index (2000) in addition to the empirical correlations to determine the Hoek’s GSI index (2002), which allowed defining the geomechanical parameters and with it, the behavior and geotechnical quality of 2,473 linear meters of underground galleries. The geomechanical parameters indicate that mining works located up to 50 m deep from the surface, present a minimal risk of rock bursting; while those located from 100 m, present violent rock bursting, causing instability. Geotechnical tests "in situ" and laboratory, carried out between 2010 and 2014 by the Instituto Nacional de Investigación Geológico, Minero y Metalúrgico (current Instituto de Investigación Geológico y E...

An environmental liability in Peru is located in Puno, in the district of Ananea, originated by informal mining activities 90 years ago. Phytoremediation was carried out with Festuca Dolichophylla, a plant native to the area, with the assistance of ammonium thiosulfate as an accelerator. Soil samples were extracted from the areas impacted with mercury. The research used a factorial design with the following response variables: the concentration of total mercury (HgT) in soil and plant tissues, and as factors the level of ammonium thiosulfate in the soil and the time of plant growth. The soils of the Ananea-Puno district have neutral pH, elemental mercury constitutes 56% of the total amount of mercury in the soil. THg concentrations in the soil range from 44 to 53 mg/ kg, which is almost 2 times higher than the upper limit for mercury content (24 mg/kg) in extractive soils in Peru. The BA...

The high Andean ecosystems in Peru constitute 14% of the surface of the territory at a national level and mining; the extractive activity of this area generates impacts in its exploration, exploitation, mineral processing and metallurgical processing activities considering the construction, operation and mine closure. Upon completion, it is a priority to recover the disturbed area and leave it in a state similar to that initially found. In the present investigation, the general objective was to identify the impacts of the mining activity that the " Humasha" Exploitation Project would generate in the stage of construction to the high Andean ecosystem, Pampa de Coshorococha, Huayllay-Pasco District, to implement a plan of management, with mitigation measures that counteract these impacts. The study was carried out through three stages: pre-field, field and cabinet; detailing that in t...

As global copper demand surges, it's vital to conduct a thorough analysis of metal concentrations in the agricultural soils of mining districts. This is especially pertinent for the Andean region, where, in the face of clear soil degradation, there's a notable lack of in-depth research. This study is the first attempt to characterize variations in the concentration of 17 metals in the agricultural soils of Moquegua – a region with a long history of mining activity that contributes significantly to Peru's position as the world's second-largest producer of copper. The surface horizons of 336 agricultural soils under vegetable crops were sampled between 9 and 3,934 m above sea level (m.a.s.l.) to determine the total content of metal nutrients (MNs) (Ca, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn) and heavy metals (HMs) (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Co, Ba, V, Al) by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spec...
