The visualization of areas, volumes, topologies and perspectives objects that stay in our environment are making by ours eyes and brain, which have a long evolution through millions years ago. This ensemble between eyes and brain must be simulated by technology in which an artificial intelligence entity take an autonomous decision based on data information acquired by sensors and computer vision. The fidelity of acquired information from the environment is the fundamental key for a good decision. In this context, the cameras and optical lens miniaturization involves distortions which modify the acquired images of areas, volumes, topologies and perspectives objects. In the present work, we make a calibration process of optical cameras which involves radial and tangential distortions, and using OpenCV libraries we calculate the intrinsics and extrinsics parameters which permit us to obtain...

To determinate the wave climate in deep water o˙ the Peruvian coast, instrumental data from satellite and buoys was employed to calibrate wave reanalysis from NCEP for the period 1979 to 2017. Wave data was calibrated using an exponential model described by Minguez et al. (2011). The results shows correlation coe°cient values between 0.7 to 0.9, also BIAS and RMSE showed acceptable values, which indicate a good approximation between both information databases. We have obtained wave information in deep waters which can be used to analyze average an extremely wave regimes to study coastal processes, and study the in˛uence of El NIÑO and La NIÑA phenomenon in the study area. This calibrated wave time series reveals that the average conditions for wave height is around 2 m, with maximum heights over 4 m. De predominant direction is from Southest for the northern and center zones, and So...

Understanding how the physiological processes of trees are affected by the environment or silvicultural practices is important for forest management, which requires process-based models. It enables the evaluation of the growth of a forest under different scenarios. The 3-PG model has been widely used all over the world, justified by its simplicity and efficiency, as it uses a more accessible language and fewer parameters than other process-based models. It is a model of greatest interest for forest management because it enables the use of allometric equations to calculate variables of interest in this area, such as the average diameter at 1.30 m height (DBH), total height and stand volume. The 3-PG parameterization is essential to guarantee the model's good performance; however, in some cases, when observed data are not available, values from the literature is used or calibration is perf...

This article is the result of the application of Six Sigma methodology to improve compliance with scheduled dates in services performed by a calibration laboratory at the customer’s facilities. Through its five phases, Six Sigma methodology makes it possible to define the problem in a specific and quantitative way, measuring the performance of the affected process, identifying and analyzing the root causes, as well as establishing the actions to overcome problems and the controls to maintain the improvements. In this way, the laboratory increases the compliance with scheduled dates from 56.2% to 70.3%, as well as the level of customer satisfaction from 72.3% to 84.6%.

In the Neutrino Physics Field, a lot of careful measurements am made such as : cross section measure¬ment, neutrino oscillation, atmospheric neutrino. Etc. In such experimental measurements one has to get the most accurate numbers as possible but in doing so one meets a lot of constraints and variables. Such is the case of the Test Beam detector (a replica of the full MIN HR//A detector where we lest and compare new targets and devices to put them further in the MINERr/A detector). The way we detect some signal in the detector is by using a scintillator material attached to a photomultiplier (when a charged particle passes through the scintillator, this emits a photon of certain spectra and this light works as input for the PMT which uses the photoelectric effect to magnify the signal (gain)), in the same way the PMT is wired to the Data Acquisition System (DAQ) in order to process the ...

This study presents a Bayesian calibration framework for 2D hydraulic models using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) as surrogate emulators of TELEMAC-2D. Applied to the Lower Piura River Basin in northern Peru, the method estimates spatially distributed Manning's roughness coefficients while accounting for structural model error. A CNN trained on a simulation ensemble predicts flood depth under varying roughness scenarios, enabling substantial computational savings. The emulator is embedded in a Bayesian inference scheme with a Gaussian Process discrepancy model to capture systematic deviations. Validation with synthetic scenarios demonstrates accurate roughness retrieval in hydraulically sensitive areas. Additionally, a real-case validation was performed using PeruSAT-1, a high-resolution Earth observation satellite operated by the Peruvian Space Agency (CONIDA), acquired during the...

Most hydrological studies rely on a model calibrated using discharge alone. However, judging the model reliability based on such calibration is problematic, as it does not guarantee the correct representation of internal hydrological processes. This study aims (a) to develop a comprehensive multi-objective calibration framework using remote sensing vegetation data and hydrological signatures (flow duration curve – FDC, and baseflow index) in addition to discharge, and (b) to apply this framework for calibration of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) in a typical Andean catchment. Overall, our calibration approach outperformed traditional discharge-based and FDC signature-based calibration strategies in terms of vegetation, streamflow, and flow partitioning simulation. New hydrological insights for the region are the following: baseflow is the main component of the streamflow sust...

Nowadays spectrometers are useful in many applications such as bio-medical technology among other industrial fields. State of the art low-cost spectrometers are usually equipped with linear photoelectric array detectors (line detectors). This thesis covers part of the software development for a low-cost multichannel spectrometer using a matrix detector instead of a linear array detector. The image acquisition including an automatic integration time optimizer was implemented. Furthermore, algorithms for data extraction and calibration were developed. Finally, the multi-channel-system with the new software was compared with a high-resolution spectrometer and the results were discussed.

Nowadays, wireless sensor devices have received wide attention across medical application areas; among them, implantable sensing devices are between the most important because of the contribution they make to healthcare and investigations. Nevertheless, the implantable sensing devices must be tested before pre-clinical or in-vivo studies are initiated and test benches are used to perform this previous tests. For this reason, this thesis presents the design and implementation of a test bench to acquire the data from an implantable sensing device that is being developed and will be used to sense the pressure within the thoracic cavity of mammals. The test bench consists on: a sealed container with two connections to increase and sense the internal pressure and is the environment where the sensor will be tested, and a wireless communication system that will acquire and process the sensor’...

As the adverse impacts of hydrological extremes increase in many regions of the world, a better understanding of the drivers of changes in risk and impacts is essential for effective flood and drought risk management and climate adaptation. However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive, empirical data about the processes, interactions, and feedbacks in complex human–water systems leading to flood and drought impacts. Here we present a benchmark dataset containing socio-hydrological data of paired events, i.e. two floods or two droughts that occurred in the same area. The 45 paired events occurred in 42 different study areas and cover a wide range of socio-economic and hydro-climatic conditions. The dataset is unique in covering both floods and droughts, in the number of cases assessed and in the quantity of socio-hydrological data. The benchmark dataset comprises (1) detailed rev...

In a context of water scarcity in Peruvian Pacific catchments as a crucial issue for Peru, added to the paucity of data availability, we propose a methodology that provides new perspectives for freshwater availability estimation as a base reference for unimpaired conditions. Under those considerations, a regional discharge of 709 m3/s to the Pacific Ocean is estimated with a significant increasing trend of about 43 m3/s per decade over the 1970–2010 period. To represent the multidecadal behaviour of freshwater runoff along the region, a regional runoff analysis is proposed based on hydrological modelling at annual and monthly time step for unimpaired conditions over the whole 1970–2010 period. Differential Split-Sample Tests are used to assess the hydrological modelling robustness of the GR1A and GR2M conceptual lumped models, showing a satisfactory transposability from dry to wet ye...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of computerized tests via the web through the measurement of their psychometric and statistical properties by applying the Classical Test Theory (TCT) and the Item Response Theory (TRI). The TCT methodology was applied to assess the difficulty and discrimination of the test and the items. The data was adjusted to the TRI binary logistic models of one, two and three parameters. A computerized test of 30 questions was applied to 775 students enrolled in the Basic Statistics course in the 2016 II semester. The results indicated a good reliability of the test with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0,833 and was corroborated with a correlation of 0,815. For the TCT the difficulty index identified three very easy questions (V7, V8 and V12) and the discrimination index did not find any questions to withdraw it. The assumption of uni...

This article proposes using neural networks to solve the challenge of accurately measuring the distance of an object using cameras and digital image processing. For this, a neural network was trained using a data set that includes information on the distance in pixels of the centers of mass of the object detected by the cameras. This data was used to teach the network to make an accurate estimate of the actual distance of the object. Image analysis methods were also used in conjunction with images of the object previously captured and trained with YoloV8 on Roboflow. The results obtained showed a notable improvement in the precision that is obtained when measuring the distance without the tedious calibration that is had in the other approaches considered for this investigation. Overcame the challenges associated with camera calibration due to possible distortion, accuracy, and generaliza...
