The authors examined the operational purpose of 48 items that establish the criteria for accreditation for teaching , learning and assessment in a medical school , and determined to what extent these criteria are applied by schools and local evaluators in 59 programs evaluated by the Consensus Committee on Medical Education ( LCME ) in the period 1994-1996. In this study, "application" meant that the evidence was offered , although this does not necessarily meet the criteria tested . as sources of information were used databases of medical education and self-assessments prepared by the powers that were undergoing accreditation studies , and reports prepared by ad hoc teams of evaluators . For each of the 48 applicants for accreditation powers , often offering evidence of compliance with the criteria verified by the evaluators was determined. Moreover, as the dissent of the powers evaluat...

The application of video-modeling in an educational intervention program to develop the autonomy of students with autism spectrum disorder, level 3 severity (ASD3), is an element to take into account for the effective development of basic social skills, which are related to daily self-care routines (grooming and personal hygiene, food and clothing), as it is one of the main areas affected according to the clinical diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (DSM-5) of the current American Psychiatryc Association. This article presents the particularities of the disorder and the guidelines to take into account for the application of this method in the process of designing an innovative educational intervention program aimed at Special Basic Education Centers considering technical, didactic and organizational aspects, as w...

Purpose: COVID-19 has affected cancer care worldwide. Clinical trials are an important alternative for the treatment of oncologic patients, especially in Latin America, where trials can be the only opportunity for some of them to access novel and, sometimes, standard treatments. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, in which a 22-question survey regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on oncology clinical trials was sent to 350 representatives of research programs in selected Latin American institutions, members of the Latin American Cooperative Oncology Group. Results: There were 90 research centers participating in the survey, with 70 of them from Brazil. The majority were partly private or fully private (n = 77; 85.6%) and had confirmed COVID-19 cases at the institution (n = 57; 63.3%). Accruals were suspended at least for some studies in 80% (n = 72) of the responses, mostly...

There is mounting evidence of the value of clinical genome sequencing (cGS) in individuals with suspected rare genetic disease (RGD), but cGS performance and impact on clinical care in a diverse population drawn from both high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has not been investigated. The iHope program, a philanthropic cGS initiative, established a network of 24 clinical sites in eight countries through which it provided cGS to individuals with signs or symptoms of an RGD and constrained access to molecular testing. A total of 1,004 individuals (median age, 6.5 years; 53.5% male) with diverse ancestral backgrounds (51.8% non-majority European) were assessed from June 2016 to September 2021. The diagnostic yield of cGS was 41.4% (416/1,004), with individuals from LMIC sites 1.7 times more likely to receive a positive test result compared to HIC sites (...

Objective: To assess the impact of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) in adult medical-surgical intensive care units (MS-ICUs) in Latin America. Design: Quasi-experimental prospective with continuous time series. Setting: The study included 77 MS-ICUs in 9 Latin American countries. Patients: Adult patients admitted to an MS-ICU for at least 24 hours were included in the study. Methods: This multicenter study was conducted over 12 months. To evaluate the ASPs, representatives from all MS-ICUs performed a self-assessment survey (0-100 scale) at the beginning and end of the study. The impact of each ASP was evaluated monthly using the following measures: antimicrobial consumption, appropriateness of antimicrobial treatments, crude mortality, and multidrug-resistant microorganisms in healthcare-associated infections (MDRO-HAIs). Using final stewardship program quality self-assessment s...

In nowadays society women because of studying, work or false beliefs replace maternal breast feeding for formula feeding. This situation is increasing and many new products appear in the market as substitutes of human milk causing mixed lactation and poor milk secretion. In some health facilities use of formulas is encouraged , and there is a little contact between mother and child which are considered as risk factors for supplementation with artificial formula which do not have immunologic stimulation causing an increase in diarrheal diseases, allergies and respiratory disordersThis study has as its main objective to evaluate the effect of an educational program on promotion of breast feeding applied during pregnancy for acquisition of healthy attitudes toward lactation. It is an experimental, explanatory, comparative, prospective , longitudinal and field, observational study. After givi...

Background: Patients with severe COVID-19 evolve to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and require management in Intensive Care Units (ICU) where they are exposed to immobilization, immunosuppression, malnutrition, nosocomial infections; may develop ICU Acquired Weakness (ICUAW), which increases with the stay and use of mechanical ventilation (MV).There is evidence of the use of different modalities in rehabilitation to mitigate these effects. Goal: To determine the efficacy of a Multimodal Rehabilitation Program (MRP) in reducing the number of days of mechanical ventilation and stay in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in ICU, as well as to describe its clinical and hospital characteristics. Material and Methods: An quasi-experimental study was designed, with sequential sampling and without blinding. A control and intervention group was formed, with 32 participants each. A Mult...
