Sumario:In nowadays society women because of studying, work or false beliefs replace maternal breast feeding for formula feeding. This situation is increasing and many new products appear in the market as substitutes of human milk causing mixed lactation and poor milk secretion. In some health facilities use of formulas is encouraged , and there is a little contact between mother and child which are considered as risk factors for supplementation with artificial formula which do not have immunologic stimulation causing an increase in diarrheal diseases, allergies and respiratory disordersThis study has as its main objective to evaluate the effect of an educational program on promotion of breast feeding applied during pregnancy for acquisition of healthy attitudes toward lactation. It is an experimental, explanatory, comparative, prospective , longitudinal and field, observational study. After giving their informed consent. pregnant patients were enrolled to this study . They were in their 6th Month of pregnancy in their first pregnancy. They attended the Obstetrics office in the Centro de Salud Ampliación Paucarpata of the Ministry of Health in 2010. We applied a questionnaire about knowledge, beliefs and practice about mother lactationWomen included in the study groups (n=50) were given the program which included 4 workshops on breast feeding, also individual counseling before and after labor as well as educational material. Control group did not receive the program. Both groups were controlled after labor and were followed with a questionnaire and clinical examination. Results show that the level of knowledge did not show significant differences in both groups, after the application of program there were differences. About favorable beliefs there were differences between both groups favoring the groups of intervention.Differences between both groups were significant in practice, where the intervention group showed a better preparation of breasts and nipples , more time for immediate breast feeding exclusive for 6 weeks post partum , good suction reflex , more baby satisfaction and lower index of: nipple ingurgitation, low milk production , nipple cracking and baby irritabilityThere were no significant differences between both groups in early baby mother contact , and or mother child bonding because of rules for assistance in health facilities that do not promote such practicesIn conclusion, the application of an educational program on breast feeding directed to pregnant mothers is feasible , improves knowledge and practices of breast feeding as well as leads to healthier habits.
