The plaza in the hispanic andean cities of Peru The process of Spanish implantation in Andean territory during the 16th century began in the nascent mestizo cities with their plazas, due to their symbolic character and because they facilitated the concentration of population, functionality and monuments. The study documents and compares typological characteristics of the urban morphology of six early Hispanic-Andean urban centers: Cajamarca, Jauja, Cuzco, Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Puno from a historiographic perspective. The information obtained allows understanding situational qualitative aspects still visible in singular spatialities that even when originated in past foundational acts of the viceroyalty, have had continuity in later scenarios of longed republican Independence that today sustain and manifest validity.

Empirical studies regarding embryo donation in developed countries show that the most probable action would be to discard surplus embryos and, if they would donate them, the preferred option would be for research, and eventually to other couples. There are not enough studies in Hispanic America about the opinions of those who have participated in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) regarding embryo disposition of surplus embryos. Moreover, there are scarce specific laws regulating ART in order to contrast people’s opinion. Works performed in Ecuador, Chile and Peru are also preceding works and basis to design a Latin American Study on embryo donation. It is necessary to perform a descriptive study on Latin American couples opinions regarding embryo donation, which would benefit several areas (clinical practice, research, bioethics, biolaw, etc.).

Research on Hispanic American independence usually uses documentation from Spanish and Latin American archives, not taking into account that of those European countries considered outside the orbit of the Hispanic monarchy. The funds of the Austrian State Archives allow us to analyze the theme of the independence using the correspondence of the diplomatic representatives of the Austrian empire stationed in Spain and Brazil. The reports, sent to Vienna between 1808 and 1825, at a time when virtually all of Europe was mired in war, open a new perspective in the investigation on the independence activities. While the documentation of the Austrian representatives in Spain offers the possibility of analysing the American independence movement from within the Spanish crown itself, the reports coming from Brazil allow the access to information from those Austrian diplomats who were geographical...

The article presents findings of archaeological explorations without excavation, carried out in the high Andean communities of Waqoto, La Raya and Qelloqocha, in the department of Cusco. The objective was to identify evidence of hunting and camelid grazing, for the recognition of the associated structures, their characteristics and their functionality, in correlation with the ethnographic data and the information left by the chroniclers of the Spanish Conquest. The kanchas, used for the grazing of llamas and alpacas, associated with the houses, these are basic modules to develop the annual grazing cycle, while the traps are used for the capture of vicuñas (Aguilar, 1995). The sites where the structures were identified are above 3,900 m. n. m. In Waqoto the economic activity is mixed: agriculture, grazing, and the extraction and quarrying of andesi...

The origins of medicine in pre-Hispanic South America are still evident in the magic and religious cosmic vision that influences the beliefs of many native South American with respect to health and disease and their therapy approaches. This magical-religious approach for health and disease has been widely spread in North, Central and South America cultures.

The purpose of the present study was the intervention of Restoration in the Pre-Hispanic Structures of the Archaeological Complex of Huchuy Qosqo, located in the District and Province of Calca, in Cusco City; as part of the exceptional testimony in its social, cultural and scientific value, showing the high degree of development of the Inca Culture in the different samples of geographical, topographical and magnitude of work management with the available technological resources. The intervention took a multidisciplinary approach, including the implementation of environmental and social safeguards, with the aim of resolving the problems identified in this archaeological complex. International documentation on heritage restoration and conservation was used as intervention criteria, resulting in the protection of the monument and the recovery of the original typology and spatial scheme, by ...

The pre-Hispanic funerary architecture in the Calvario hill, province of Calca, Cusco, reveals a social organization, by the architectural attributes that present the funerary structures; form of plant, body, cover, size, materials, construction techniques, finishes and decorations. A total of 182 structures were recorded, located in cliffs, crevices and crags, with different types of groupings, with up to 8 levels of construction. These architectural attributes show similarities and variations to nearby sites in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

We present the results of a paleoseismic survey of the Incapuquio Fault System, a prominent transpressional fault system cutting the forearc of South Perú. High-resolution Digital Elevation Models, optical satellite imagery, radiocarbon dating, and paleoseismic trenching indicate that at least 2–3 m of net slip occurred on the Incapuquio Fault generating a complex, ∼100-km long set of segmented fault scarps in the early 15th century (∼1400–1440 CE). We interpret the consistent along-strike pattern of fault scarp heights, geometries and kinematics to reflect a surface rupture generated by a single Mw 7.4–7.7 earthquake, suggesting that brittle failure of the forearc poses a significant, yet mostly overlooked, seismic hazard to the communities in coastal areas of Perú. The timing of this earthquake coincides with the collapse of the Chiribaya civilization in ∼1360–1400 CE, ...

The purpose of this research is to analyse the landscape and archaeoastronomical heritage of Ñaña, Lurigancho-Chosica, which subsists in the interstices of the contemporary urban periphery of Metropolitan Lima. Despite the state’s neglect and unregulated urban growth in its surroundings, it holds many unexploited attributes. The Union-Ñaña archaeological zone was inhabited since pre-Hispanic times by specialists in the observation of astronomical phenomena called yañac, who were linked to the cult of the snow peak Pariacaca. The latter was the most important apu from the Central Andes of Peru, according to the mythical 'Manuscript of Huarochirí' from the 16th century. Thus, the study of the relationship between landscape and astronomical alignments (a key aspect of the Andean worldview) is a crucial component of the following study, which also has the goal of expanding the unders...

This article presents the results obtained from the study carried out with limited excavations of the pre-Hispanic building of Campoy, located on the right bank of the lower middle valley of Rímac, in the current one in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho. The interventions were part of the work objectives of the Huaca Fortaleza de Campoy Archaeological Research Project, whose research and protection interventions of the complex were promoted by the Institute of Culture, History and Environment ICHMA in 2017. The archaeological record has us allowed documenting various architectural designs, technological features and associated resources both inside and outside of the environments of a residence that would have been part of a monumental construction project, as evidenced by the superposition of structures that were consolidated as an expression of the symbolic power achieved by a c...
