The association between genital and urinary organs has been established for many years. Kahum papyrus, written in ancient Egypt 2000 BC is dedicated exclusively to women's diseases. In that document, diseases of the female genital organs are considered in conjunction with bladder diseases. Section 67 of the Ebers Papyrus, written 1500 years BC alterations regarding urination frequency, retention and "burning" is described; and the "treatment of women suffering from urine diseases and uterus." Section 24 of this same papyrus gynecological and obstetric disorders described, and contains requirements for the treatment of ulcers and inflammation of the vulva, prolapse, sterility and menorrhagia also requirements for alterations pathways urinary.

50 cases of patients who had preterm labor is studied. Careful not to include cases where the cause of prematurity was evident (twins, polyhydramnios, hemorrhagic cases) were reported. Urine culture sample was taken by bladder catheterization in the first 48 hours postpartum. Parallel monitoring 50 cases of patients whose delivery was at term, and also was made urine culture is studied. It was obtained obvious differences in both groups. In the group studied was 20% positive urine cultures, against 10% in the control group. The predominant germ was E. coli. The perinatal mortality in the study group was 20%, ten times higher than the control group. It is recommended that urine cultures routinely performed in all cases of preterm labor.

Today, maternal perinatal health should be incorporated within the concept of Safe Motherhood and as such, an integral part of reproductive health. This is best understood as a right of individuals. Consequently, the provision of care for pregnant women and reduction of maternal and perinatal mortality should be viewed as an issue of human rights and social justice.

OBJECTIVES: To precise clinical differences of three uterine evacuation procedures for incomplete abortion, quality and costs of human and material resources, and acceptability of immediate postabortion contraception. DESIGN: Prospective study of 759 patients with uncomplicated incomplete abortion attended at Maria Auxiliadora Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Department randomly assigned to either dilatation and curettage (D&C, 348 patients) or manual (211) or electrical (200) suction. Clinical findings, and post op complications were registered. Contraceptive counseling was offered. If patient did not return for evaluation within 30 days, she was visited at home. Objective. This paper tries to precise maternal and perinatal complications associated with premature rupture of the membranes. Stuay Design: By the perinatal informatic system the authors identified 2 397 patients with premature rupture of the membranes (PROM) attended at Maria Auxiliadora Hospital from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1992. Another 7550 women without any pregnancy complication were selected as controls. Maternal and perinatal complications were determinated in both groups. Results: PROM rate was 15,7%. In PROM patients, induction of labor, cesarean section, postpartum haemorrhage, puerperal infection and other complications were more frequent than in noPROM patients. The authors present a collaborative study that prospectively has engaged 14 maternity hospitals in the public sector, 10 from the Ministry of Health (MOH) and 4 of the Peruvian Institute of Social Security (IPSS); Likewise 9 corresponded to Lima and 5 establishments were in other regions. Between March and July 1993 he managed to gather a total of 4205 cases of cesarean births attended between 21797 during the same period, representing a rate of 19.3%. OBJECTIVE: To update rate and causes of maternal death at Peruvian hospitals. DESIGN: A Self Evaluation Manual was elaborated and 31 hospitals were selected 7 in Lima and Callao and 24 in the different regions of Peru. The Self Evaluation Manual was previously sent to the hospitals and a report was requested. A technical team had scheduled visits to each hospital and met with the board of directors. Registry information of the three previous years was obtained and processed with the V2, 6 Fox Pro Program. OBJETIVE: To examine the results of a strategy to improve quality of services in the reduction of maternal and perinatal mortality. DESIGN: Operational research whose baseline a set of indicators taken into selected health facilities in 1996 and after a series of interventions were again measured in 1999. The selected establishments were 13 hospitals and 24 heads of service network in the regions of Lima -Callao, Cajamarca, Loreto and Apurimac. In each of the Ten Steps for Safe Childbirth Initiative was introduced in order to help improve the quality and warmth of institutional delivery and thus help reduce maternal and perinatal mortality. Methods: Three Regional Forums were organized with participation of a group of experts at national level and a group of experts at each of the three regions involved in the intervention (Arequipa, Piura y Ucayali). Consensus on thematic content and event development methodology was obtained. This investigation tries to identify risk factors for tubal infertility. The authors studied 400 cases attended at María Auxiliadora Hospital. We selected 284 cases with sufficient information, 112 had tubal infertility and 172 had infertility by other factors. When the authors compared both groups, they found that abortion, induced abortion, PID, endometriosis and pelvic surgery were more frequent in patients with tubal infertility. Conclusion: The authors recommend that physicians adopt preventive reproductive measures in postpartum and postabortion complications, STD (PID included) and pelvic surgery.

By lower absolute number of maternal deaths in relation to infant deaths, the true dimension of this tragedy was not valued until after after the world conference in Geneva and Nairobi in 1985 and 1987 respectively, after which generated in the world, fortunately, a current safe motherhood. UNICEF estimates that each year 585 000 women die worldwide as a result of complications arising during pregnancy, childbirth and puerperio1. Of all these deaths, 7% (35000) occurs in Latin America and, of these, around 5000 for the Andean Group (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela). I should add that, of these deaths, approximately 1600 for the Peru.

OBJECTIVE: To determine menopausal women's knowledge, use and reasons for nott using HRT MATERIAL AND METHODS: Epidemiologic descriptive cross-sectional study through a semiestructured questionnaire applied to 500 middle-class women 45 through 65-year-old, with high school or superior education. RESULTS: Women were either house wives, office workers, managers or professionals; 68,4% had sometime talked about climacteric and menopause with their doctor, 11,6% said they knew much about HRT 76,5% knew only little and 12,7% did not know about HRT Information was mainly given by gynecologists, and by social media in 17,8%. Tablets and injectables were presentations most frequently known. In women that knew about HRT 58% said it improved depression and mood, 52,8% bot-flushes, 22% vaginal diyness, 51% osteoporosis and 25% myocardial infarction.
