OBJECTIVE: To determine menopausal women's knowledge, use and reasons for nott using HRT MATERIAL AND METHODS: Epidemiologic descriptive cross-sectional study through a semiestructured questionnaire applied to 500 middle-class women 45 through 65-year-old, with high school or superior education. RESULTS: Women were either house wives, office workers, managers or professionals; 68,4% had sometime talked about climacteric and menopause with their doctor, 11,6% said they knew much about HRT 76,5% knew only little and 12,7% did not know about HRT Information was mainly given by gynecologists, and by social media in 17,8%. Tablets and injectables were presentations most frequently known. In women that knew about HRT 58% said it improved depression and mood, 52,8% bot-flushes, 22% vaginal diyness, 51% osteoporosis and 25% myocardial infarction. OBJECTIVE: To update rate and causes of maternal death at Peruvian hospitals. DESIGN: A Self Evaluation Manual was elaborated and 31 hospitals were selected 7 in Lima and Callao and 24 in the different regions of Peru. The Self Evaluation Manual was previously sent to the hospitals and a report was requested. A technical team had scheduled visits to each hospital and met with the board of directors. Registry information of the three previous years was obtained and processed with the V2, 6 Fox Pro Program. RESULTS: Seventeen hospitals to the coast, 10 to the mountains and 4 to the jungles; 25 were from the Ministry of Health, 3 from the Peruvian Institute of Social Security, 2 were integrated hospitals with origin in both institutions and 1 was aprivate hospítal. OBJETIVE: To examine the results of a strategy to improve quality of services in the reduction of maternal and perinatal mortality. DESIGN: Operational research whose baseline a set of indicators taken into selected health facilities in 1996 and after a series of interventions were again measured in 1999. The selected establishments were 13 hospitals and 24 heads of service network in the regions of Lima -Callao, Cajamarca, Loreto and Apurimac. In each of the Ten Steps for Safe Childbirth Initiative was introduced in order to help improve the quality and warmth of institutional delivery and thus help reduce maternal and perinatal mortality. RESULTS: Up to September 1999 the initiative was adequately developed in 12 hospitals and 16 headends. 100% of establishments adopted an explicit policy for safe motherhood, allowing train 4,497 health workers.
