The purpose of the present work is to determine the quality of five bodies of water within the Rimac river watershed, by analyzing the data provided by the Autoridad Nacional del Agua (ANA ‐ the National Water Authority) in its report on Technical Monitoring of Water Quality in the Rimac River Watershed (2013). These five bodies of water have been assigned to Category 1 A2 ("Domestic and Recreational Use") indicating that their water could be made potable through conventional treatment. The results can be used as a tool to evaluate the quality of bodies of water and facilitate their environmental management, by identifying those would be more prone to lose their qualification as Category 1 A2. Use of the Grey Clustering Analysis methodology and the Prati water quality index allowed us to carry out the analysis in an objective manner. The criteria for selecting the bodies of water was t...

Partial hand and transradial amputations are among the most common levels of amputation. In the former case, a mechanical prosthesis is prescribed, while in the latter case either a mechanical or a myoelectric one are used depending on the patient’s preference and access to the technology. While a variety of prostheses designs are aimed to transradial amputees and plenty others are for partial hand amputations, like the 3D-printed open-source concepts that are activated by the user’s wrist, for a faster and more efficient treatment of hand amputations, one design should be adaptive for different levels of amputation without compromising the prosthesis performance. This work describes a powered prosthesis design with modular fingers and space constraints that allow it to be adapted to different levels of amputation. The prosthesis finger lengths could also be customized to user-specif...

‘Gradual’ vs ‘punctuated’ and ‘unidirectional’ (only lengthening) vs. ‘bidirectional’ (lengthenings and shortenings) modes of evolution are explanations that compete to explain adaptive changes of flower tube length in angiosperm. The nightshade genus Salpichroa Miers, with 21 species mostly growing in the tropical Andes of southern South America, has the opportune qualities of including nearly 15-fold inter-specific variation in corolla tube length, as well as one species that is a candidate for participating in evolutionary escalation with the longest-billed hummingbird, Ensifera ensifera. We reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships using five molecular markers, the two plastid markers trnD-trnT and trnL, and three nuclear markers, ITS and two COSII, and estimated divergence times of the genus in order to reconstruct the history of both corolla tube length and polli...

A novel methodology was employed to prepare new nanocomposites with photocatalytic properties based on Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles arranged over a layered silicate. The catalysts were porous materials formed by exfoliated silicate layers surrounded by anatase nanoparticles. In this way, the anatase was doped by different amounts of Ce, yielding to catalysts with light absorption properties on the visible region. The photocatalytic behavior was tested for different reactions: adsorption and photocatalysis, showing outstanding and promising results for the removal of bacteria by using solar light as an energy source. The influence of the physicochemical properties of the catalyst and the reaction parameters will be studied in detail to manage new catalysts for the disinfection of drinking water.
