One of the pollutants that can be found in water bodies as a result of industrial activity is arsenic. Methods for the removal of this non-metal turn out to be inefficient and expensive. A new nanocomposite based on tara gum and magnetite nanoparticles was prepared for the removal of arsenic from water. The characterization of the nanocomposites prepared with different Fe3O4: tara gum ratios showed the presence of the magnetite phase by XRD and it was also measurement the particle size (13.74 nm) by TEM. The arsenic removal tests in water carried out with the nanocomposites with different magnetite content, pH variation and nanocomposite weight showed that the nanocomposite with 80% by weight of magnetite presented higher efficiency. The maximum values studied for arsenic concentration were 2 ppm, reaching 24.8% removal in 15 minutes of exposure using the nanocomposite with 80% magnetite...

Background and Objective: A previous study investigated the in vitro release of methylene blue (MB), a widely used cationic dye in biomedical applications, from nanocellulose/nanoporous silicon (NC/nPSi) composites under conditions simulating body fluids. The results showed that MB release rates varied significantly with the nPSi concentration in the composite, highlighting its potential for controlled drug delivery. To further analyze the relationship between diffusion dynamics and the MB concentration, this study developed a finite element (FE) method to solve Fick’s equations governing the drug delivery system. Methods: Release profiles of MB from NC/nPSi composites with varying nPSi concentrations (0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1.0%) were experimentally measured in triplicate using phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at 37 °C, pH 7.4, and 100 rpm. Mathematical models incorporating linear and q...

This paper focuses on the synthesis of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles by the sol–gel method and their photocatalytic activity to eliminate bacteria in aqueous media at two different scales: in a laboratory reactor and a solar pilot plant. Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles were prepared using Co(II) and Fe(II) salts as precursors and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide as a surfactant. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Escherichia coli (E. coli) strain ATCC 22922 was used as model bacteria for contact biocidal analysis carried out by disk diffusion method and photocatalysis under an ultraviolet A (UV-A) lamp for laboratory analysis and solar radiation (radiation below 350 W/m2 in a typical cloudy day) for the pilot plant analysis. The results showed that cobalt ferrite nanoparticles have an average diameter of (36 ± ...

ZnO nanorods (ZnO NRs) were grown on ZnO seeded polyethylene tert-phtalate (PET) substrates obtained from recycled soda bottles at low temperatures (90 °C) from Zn2+ precursors in alkaline aqueous solution. The ZnO seeds were deposited on the PET substrates by spray gel (SG) or dip coating (DC) from a ZnO methanol sol. In the case of SG, the PET substrate was heated at 90 °C during the spray process. By the other hand the ZnO seed layers obtained by dip coating were heated at 90 °C or 130 °C for 10 minutes among coatings. Before seeding two procedures were made on PET surface for improving seed adhesion: 1) PET surface was mechanically roughened with sand paper 1200. 2) PET surface was chemically treated with a solution of NaOH in ethanol. The relationship between the microstructure of the ZnO NRs films as function of the PET surface treatment and the photocatalytic antibacterial act...

ZnO nanorods (NRs) films, nitrogen-doped (ZnO:N), and ZnO doped with nitrogen and decorated with silver nanostructures (ZnO:N-Ag) NRs films were vertically supported on undoped and N doped ZnO seed layers by a wet chemical method. The obtained films were characterized structurally by X-ray diffraction. Morphological and elemental analysis was performed by scanning electron microscopy, including an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy facility and their optical properties by Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy. Analysis performed in the NRs films showed that the nitrogen content in the seed layer strongly affected their structure and morphology. The mean diameter of ZnO NRs ranged from 70 to 190 nm. As the nitrogen content in the seed layer increased, the mean diameter of ZnO:N NRs increased from 132 to 250 nm and the diameter dispersion decreased. This diameter increase occurs simultaneousl...

A novel methodology was employed to prepare new nanocomposites with photocatalytic properties based on Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles arranged over a layered silicate. The catalysts were porous materials formed by exfoliated silicate layers surrounded by anatase nanoparticles. In this way, the anatase was doped by different amounts of Ce, yielding to catalysts with light absorption properties on the visible region. The photocatalytic behavior was tested for different reactions: adsorption and photocatalysis, showing outstanding and promising results for the removal of bacteria by using solar light as an energy source. The influence of the physicochemical properties of the catalyst and the reaction parameters will be studied in detail to manage new catalysts for the disinfection of drinking water.
