Introduction: The low academic performance at the university is influenced by multiple factors manifested in the early years of study. Objectives: To determine the factors affecting the low academic performance of medical students during their first year of studies. Design: Observational, longitudinal study. Non-probability sampling was used for assessments. Setting: San Fernando Faculty of Medicine, San Marcos National University, Lima-Peru. Interventions: A questionnaire, physical, psychological and laboratory examinations were applied. Main outcome measures: Factors that influence low academic performance. Results: Forty students (14 females and 26 males), aged between 18 and 30 years, were evaluated; 31 came from state schools (78%) and 9 from private schools (23%). With regards to study habits, 27 (67%) reported reading the subjects of the profession at least once a day, and 13 (33%...

Objective: To determine endometrial morphology and estrogen receptors expression changes in post menopausal women following oral soya treatment. Design: Descriptve, observational, longitudinal and prospective study. Setting: Pathology Institute, San Marcos National Major University. Patients: Twenty-two post menopausal women treated with soya. Interventions: Histological and immunohistochemical studies were done in endometrium aspiration biopsies before and after 6 months treatment with 60 g oral soya per day. Main outcome measures: Endometrium histology and estrogen and progesterone receptors expression changes. Results: Age ranged between 46 and 65 years, 53 years average. There was apparent vasomotor symptoms improvement. Endometrium before soya treatment was atrophic in 19 patients (86%) and inactive in 3 (14%). Following soya treatment 17 (77,3%) persisted atrophic, 4 (18,2%) were i...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of viral antigens (HPV, CMV and HSV2) in cervical cancer and precursors. DESIGN: Expression of viral antigens is studied by inmune bistochemistry (LSAB) in 91 cervical biopsies with diagnosis of squamous intraepithelial lesion (low and high grade IEL) and invasive squamous carcinoma in 94 patients with history of abnormal citology. RESULTS: Viral antigens expressed in 81 of 91 cases (89%), either alone (46%) or combined (42%). In 58% HPV was detected (57% in low grade IEL, 60% bigb grade IEL and 50% invasive cancer), and in 45% CMV (57% low grade IEL, 35% high grade IEL and 17% squamous carcinoma). Significant differences were noted in the 3 viral antigens expression in high grade lesions (p > 0, 05). CONCLUSIÓN: Prevalence of viral antigens in this group is related to cervical tumor; HPV was the viral antigen most frequently detected in cervical c...

Objective: To determine both the prevalence and risk factors of cervical cancer and squamous intraepithelial lesions, with special attention on the preinvasive cervical disease treatment. Design: Prospective, descriptive, non randomized study. Materials and Methods: Study of 120 non randomly selected cases of cervical cytology during 2003, in women attended at Piedra Liza Health Center (San Juan de Lurigancho). In 49 cases, biopsy was performed to confirm both clinical and colposcopic findings. Results: From the 120 cytology cases, 14 (11,5%) were ASC, 67 (56%) L-SIL, 34 (29%) H-SIL, 3 (2,5%) squamous carcinoma, 2 (2%) adenocarcinoma. In the 49 biopsies, 12 cases were L-SIL, 32 H-SIL, 3 invasive squamous carcinoma, and 2 cervical adenocarcinoma, one in situ. Conclusions: Cytology results suggest that squamous intraepithelial lesions and cervical carcinoma have higher prevalence in this s...

OBJECTIVES: To determine the clinicopathological features of patients with cutaneous melanoma, the role of Merckel cells in this tumour and diagnostic usefulness of celular markers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinico-pathological correlation of 650 clinical records of patients with histopathological diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma was done. The Ag S100, HMB-45, cromogranin A, and p53 protein presence were assessed in 30 of these patients who also had pigmented benign skin lesions. RESULTS: Patients with melanoma had history of sunlight exposure and previous nevus or associated nevus. AgS100 was the more sensitive marker but had lesser specificity; HMB-45 was positive in lesions with malignant and active melanocytes whereas p53 was seen in certain melanoma cells. Proliferating Merckel cells were not found. CONCLUSIONS: S100 antigen must be used as diagnostic tool; HMB-45 had a lesser sensitivi...

The aim of this work done at the Instituto de Patologia de la Facultad de Medicina-UNMSM was to know the frequency of secondary tuberculous glomerulonephritis, through a retrospective study of 42 autopsies and 3 post mortem biopsies in 45 tuberculous patients with glomerulonephritis. Mycobacterium antigens in renal glomeruli were identified by immunomicroscopy. The glomerular lesion was classified with the 1988 WHO classification of renal diseases. Clinical pathological correlation was done. We concluded : a) 37,78% of the cases in this study had Mycobacterium antigens positive in the glomeruli; b) In all the positive cases the glomerular lesion was classified as membranoproliferative or mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis; c) Most of the patients with secondary mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis had chronic pulmonary tuberculosis.
