OBJECTIVES: To establish the prevalence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in pre-malignant lesions and invasive cervical lesions, and to assess the sensitivity and specificity of inmunohisto- chemical method to detect HPV antigens with respect to the citologic, colposcopic and anatomopathologic studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cervical biopsy samples were taken under colposcopy among 91 women from Lima, who had a previous abnormal cytologic control. Results of their citologic, colposcopic and biopsy samples, as well as immunohistochemical detection of viral antigens were recorded. RESULTS: HPV was diagnosed 39/91 (43%) by cytologic, 57/91 (63%) by colposcopic, and 78/91 (86%) by histologic methods. HPV antigen expression positivity was 53/91 (56%) by immunohistochemistry. High grade intraepiteliary scamous lesions (ISL) were more frequent than low grade ISL. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of HPV amon...

OBJECTIVES. To divulge colposcope use and indications in gynecological consultation, and its usefulness with abnormal smears and in the early diagnosis of both cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and preclinical cancer. DESIGN. Prospective study of 247 cases of CIN. SETTING. A Loayza Hospital, Lima, Perú. RESULTS. CIN I was present in 72 cases, CIN II in 73 and CIN III in 102. Higher incidence was in 30-34 year-old (19%), followed by 25-29year-old (14,6%) and 35-39 year-old (13,8%); 72% started sexual life before age 20 and 36,8% had 2 or more sexual partners. Aspathology accentuates, diagnosis is more evident and CIN III reaches a colposcopy histology correlation of 94%. CONCLUSIONS. CIN is found at early ages. Any positive cytology should befollowed by colposcopy guided biopsy. Colposcopy along with cytology and biopsy efficiently diagnose early lesions of the uterine cervix and ...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of viral antigens (HPV, CMV and HSV2) in cervical cancer and precursors. DESIGN: Expression of viral antigens is studied by inmune bistochemistry (LSAB) in 91 cervical biopsies with diagnosis of squamous intraepithelial lesion (low and high grade IEL) and invasive squamous carcinoma in 94 patients with history of abnormal citology. RESULTS: Viral antigens expressed in 81 of 91 cases (89%), either alone (46%) or combined (42%). In 58% HPV was detected (57% in low grade IEL, 60% bigb grade IEL and 50% invasive cancer), and in 45% CMV (57% low grade IEL, 35% high grade IEL and 17% squamous carcinoma). Significant differences were noted in the 3 viral antigens expression in high grade lesions (p > 0, 05). CONCLUSIÓN: Prevalence of viral antigens in this group is related to cervical tumor; HPV was the viral antigen most frequently detected in cervical c...
