Depression associated with stroke affects roughly one-third of stroke survivors. Post-stroke depression (PSD) is thought to adversely influence functional outcome by limiting participation in rehabilitation, decreasing physical, social, and cognitive function, and affecting neuroplasticity thereby placing stroke survivors at high risk for future vascular events. PSD has also been associated with higher mortality rates after stroke. In Peru, a country where there is no national stroke program and mental health disorders are largely underdiagnosed and untreated, people with PSD are likely to be further challenged by dependency and impoverished conditions that will limit their use of ambulatory services, leading to inadequate clinical follow-up. In this scenario, mobile health (mHealth) technology offers a promising approach to extend access to high-quality and culturally tailored evidence-...

Increases in the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), particularly cardiometabolic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes, and their major risk factors have not been uniform across settings: for example, cardiovascular disease mortality has declined over recent decades in high-income countries but increased in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The factors contributing to this rise are varied and are influenced by environmental, social, political and commercial determinants of health, among other factors. This Review focuses on understanding the rise of cardiometabolic diseases in LMICs, with particular emphasis on obesity and its drivers, together with broader environmental and macro determinants of health, as well as LMIC-based responses to counteract cardiometabolic diseases. © 2019, Springer Nature America, Inc.

Background Describing the prevalence and trends of cardiometabolic risk factors that are associated with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is crucial for monitoring progress, planning prevention, and providing evidence to support policy efforts. We aimed to analyse the transition in body-mass index (BMI), obesity, blood pressure, raised blood pressure, and diabetes in the Americas, between 1980 and 2014. Methods We did a pooled analysis of population-based studies with data on anthropometric measurements, biomarkers for diabetes, and blood pressure from adults aged 18 years or older. A Bayesian model was used to estimate trends in BMI, raised blood pressure (systolic blood pressure =140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure =90 mm Hg), and diabetes (fasting plasma glucose =7.0 mmol/L, history of diabetes, or diabetes treatment) from 1980 to 2014, in 37 countries and six subregions of the Ameri...

Stroke is a major cause of death and disability, with most of its burden now affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). People in rural areas of LMIC who have a stroke receive very little acute stroke care and local healthcare workers and family caregivers in these regions lack the necessary knowledge to assist them. Intriguingly, a recent rapid growth in cell-phone use and digital technology in rural areas has not yet been appropriately exploited for health care training and delivery purposes. What should be done in rural areas, at the community setting-level, where access to healthcare is limited remains a challenge. We review the evidence on improving post-stroke outcomes including lowering the risks of functional disability, stroke recurrence, and mortality, and propose some approaches, to target post-stroke care and rehabilitation, noting key challenges in designing suitable...

In the present work we determine the threshold of the nanoparticle behavior of copper nanoparticles by studying their structural and electronic properties. The studied nanoparticles contain from 13 to 8217 atoms and were obtained by molecular dynamics simulations using the Johnson potential for copper based on the embedded atom method. The results indicate that for small copper nanoparticles (o1000 atoms, 2.8 nm) the surface plays an important role in their physical properties. Whereas, for large nanoparticles (42000 atoms, 3.5 nm), with spherical-like external shape and large percentage of fcc-like local structure, this effect is negligible and their electronic character are similar to such expected in solid copper. Finally, it has also been shown that copper nanoparticles change their electronic character, from metallic to insulating, after increasing the strength of the chemical disor...

Since its foundation, in 1963, the academic formation of professional foresters in the National Agrarian University of La Molina, Lima, Perú, has been partially performed directly in the forest. This obviously implies higher efforts and costs, but these are considered essential to ensure the quality of the future foresters.

Currently the most studied type of magnetic nanoparticles are of cubic structure, inverse spinel, because these materials have very interesting features and possible applications since they facilitate building more complex systems. We must consider that due to the presence of transition metal on the surface of nanoparticles is that the conditions for funcionalizarlas with other molecules through complex functional groups obtaining materials with polar or apolar characteristics, depending on the type of implementation that want to use. Considering that when working with biological systems nanoparticles are detected by the reticuloendothelial system (RES). This functionalization is responsible for preventing agglomeration there of allowing them to remain in stable suspension (magnetic colloids) that can be driven by external magnetic fields. In this work, we show in detail the results obta...

In this report, we provide information on food plants of the equatorial saki (Pithecia aequatorialis) and its competitors in highland forest of the micro-watershed of the Itaya River, Peruvian Amazonia. From May to November 2009 and from January to April 2010 we followed silently two family groups with the purpose to identify plants whose fruits are part of their diet. During the contacts we had 90 food events in 48 plant species grouped in 24 families. Of these, 36 live in low hill forest and the rest in high terrace forest. The highest diversity of food plants is grouped into seven families that together accounted for 60.4%, among them Moraceae (8 species), Fabaceae (6 species) and Annonaceae (4 species) families. The fruits were mostly eaten in ripe state, being the mesocarp the most appreciated (40%). Among mammals, seven of the competitors were primates, with the main competitor bei...

Various doses (0-20 kGy) of gamma radiation have been applied to samples of maca (Lepidium meyenii walp) flour, yellow, white and purple ecotypes, to decontaminate them. The gamma radiation dose required to eliminate the aerobic mesophiles was 12-15 kGy while it was necessary to applied 1-8 kGy to kill fungi, depending on the ecotype of Maca. We have determined the antioxidant activity of the irradiated samples by the method of neutralization of DPPH radical. IC50 values of the studied samples indicate that gamma radiation does not substantially alter the antioxidant activity of aqueous extracts of maca yellow, white and purple. In contrast, the antioxidant activity of hydroalcoholic extracts of irradiated maca yellow decrease sharply, but not the other ecotypes.
