The objective of the study was to evaluate the protection and safety for in ovo vaccination against Infection Bursal Disease. Cobb Vantress broilers of one day of age (n=450) were distributed in three groups: Group A, vaccinated at 9 and 19 days with two commercial live vaccines containing Lukert and 2512 strains, respectively; group B, vaccinated in ovo with the antigen-antibody complex at 18 days of incubation; and group C, unvaccinated. At 35 days of age, 20 birds from each group were challenged, ocular via, with the F52/70 strain of Gumboro disease. The security of the complex vaccine was evaluated weekly until 47 days of age by determining the bursal index, gross lesions, histopathological lesions of the bursa, and serological response. Group B showed the best protection with 75% as compared with groups A (68%) and C (30%). Injuries after challenge were characterized by swelling, bl...

The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of antibodies against avian Paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1) in backyard turkeys (n=388) in four provinces of Lima, Peru (Lima, Huaral, Huaura, and Barranca). Blood samples were collected from August to December 2008 and analyzed by hemagglutination inhibition test. The resulting seroprevalence was 3.9% as 15/388 turkeys showed antibody titers consistent with a viral challenge of APMV-1. The highest frequency of positive samples (10/15) was observed in the province of Lima, whereas none sample was positive in the Barranca province. It is concluded that backyard turkeys in three provinces of Lima were exposed to some strains of PMVA-l, constituting a reservoir of virus.

Vaccination against the Infectious Bursal disease via spray and via drinking water was compared in broilers using a vaccine with intermediate strains in a vaccination programme at 7 and 17 days of age. A total of 69 100 Cobb Vantress 500 chicks in a commercial farm were divided in two similar groups. Group A was vaccinated via spray and group B was vaccinated via drinking water. Then, 50 chicks at 29 days of age from each group were relocated to an experimental farm and challenged with a standard F52/70 strain. Bursal index, macroscopic and microscopic lesions, and serological response were monitored in both challenged and non-challenged birds. Minor clinical signs of short duration, including depressions and diarrhea were observed during three days in challenged birds in both experimental groups showing the level of protection conferred by the vaccine in both groups; however, greater nu...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of Sacha inchi oil (Plukenetia volubilis) in the diet of broiler breeders on the productive performance of their progeny. The study included 720 male Cobb Vantres 500 chicks where half of them originated from breeders fed with a diet containing 5% Sacha inchi oil and the other half fed with a diet containing conventional fat. Nine replicates per group were used in the study. Body weight, food intake, mortality, feed conversion index (FCI), European productive efficiency index (PEI),and level of active and passive humoral immunity were evaluated. At 42 days of age, the inclusion of Sacha inchi oil in the diet showed a positive but not significant effect on productive performance, but a significant increase in the level of maternal antibodies against Newcastle disease (p<0.05) and a slight increase of maternal antibodies against Gumboro an...
