Discrete-time survival models are discussed and applied to the study of which factors are associated with student dropouts at a private university in Lima, Per_u. We studied the characteristics of 26; 790 incoming students enrolled between 2004 and 2012 in all the under-graduate programs at the University. The analysis include the estimation of the survival and hazard functions using the Kaplan-Meier method and the _tting of parametric models using the Cox proportional hazards regression and the Logistic regression for survival analysis, this last one, in order to include time varying variables as predictors. During the period of analysis, the cumulative probability of remain at the University after _ve years was 73.7% [95% CI: 73.1% - 74.4%]. In any period the hazard is greater than 4.4% and this highest value is reached in the 3rd semester. In a multivariate analysis, we found that aca...

We present a scheme of eHealth based on teleconsults aimed to reduce unexpected events and complications in type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM-II). To this end, this study has considered the history of glucose tests taken as input inside a predictive mathematical scheme based on probabilities. The resulting output goes to a real-time monitoring system in order to detect and update those cases where patients would require of rapid assistance. The simulations have shown that the opportune intervention of teleconsults might be effective in the sense of monitoring diet and drug-based treatment by employing simple mobile phones and minimal software applications. For example, the case of a critic patient with a rapid increasing of glucose above 200 mg/dL, the opportune intervention of teleconsults might reduce these values by a 50% during a time of 20±2 days. It can also be traduced as the improvem...

FONCODES is the public body in charge of financing and managing the execution of social-productive projects throughout the Peruvian territory. The objective of social-productive projects within the framework of the National Strategy of the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion is to generate economic opportunities for rural households living in poverty and extreme poverty. The key processes to achieve these national strategic objectives are related to the management of portfolios and projects at all stages. The key information of these processes is that related to budget, expenditure authorizations, accountability, liquidation and financial records since it allows evaluating the efficiency of the obtained management results. There are serious limitations during the transmission of information in real time generating bottlenecks in the respective processes. This paper presents the ...

The pandemic situation that the planet is going through has overwhelmed all the health facilities and programs. The penitentiary detention centers have not been oblivious to this reality. To the known problems of an infrastructure overwhelmed by the inmate population and to the scarce medical attention that a high percentage of infectious-contagious diseases brings, this new virus is added, the full effects of which are unknown. It is also worrying that a high number of the prison population is still facing sentencing processes: due to excessive abuse of the preventive detention mechanism and the almost null application by the judicial operators of the principles of proportionality and reasonableness. Jail is the exception. The judges have made it the rule.

This article proposes the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) to solve the power flow problem in electrical energy systems. Power flow calculates the steady state of an electrical power system (SEP) and is a fundamental tool for the planning, operation and control of modern SEPs. The mathematical model of the power flow corresponds to a set of nonlinear algebraic equations that can be solved conventionally with the iterative Newton-Raphson (NR) method or with its decoupled versions. Currently, there are various commercial computer programs that use such methods. Among the objectives of the solution of the ANN-based power flow problem proposed here, its potential application stands out to solve problems that require a large computational effort such as online static security analysis and contingency analysis. The proposed methodology was applied to the 6-bar Ward-Hale and 14-bar IEEE ...

Regardless of the factory type, the performance of machinery is an important factor to be competitive. To ensure optimal equipment performance, many companies focus on establishing continuous improvement programs. This is the reason why there are methods, with the final purpose to increase the disponibility and operation, additionally, it also produces regulations of order, because it helps to reduce unused times, as is the case of 5S. Likewise, efficiency is also measured through the OEE maintenance KPI (equipment effectiveness) averaging a moderation towards the implementation of management methods. This article presents the implementation of two of the pillars: the TPM (preventive maintenance and autonomous maintenance) and 5s. Further, the most relevant contribution after the application of these methods, is the performance increase on the OEE. For this case study, after the simulati...

Background: The implementation of routine fixed-time artificial insemination programs can generate significant waste and costs, which good management practices can help mitigate. The objective of the study was to assess the effects of second- and third-use progesterone devices on estrus characteristics and pregnancy rates in synchronized crossbred Gyr cows. Methods: Ten cows were synchronized with first-use Bovine Intravaginal Progesterone Devices (DIB), nine with second-use DIB and ten with third-use DIB. All cows were ≥90 days postpartum, had an average milk production of 6.9±1.9 L/day and were aged 4-10 years. Estrus signs were recorded at insemination and pregnancies were confirmed at 60 days by ultrasonography. Result: No significant associations were found between DIB use intensity and estrus detection patch response, mucus color, body condition score (CC), calvings, or breed pu...

Introduction: Improvement in health care is reflected in achieving better results in quality indicators. For quite some time several programs have pursued a reduction of complications and length of stay. A program called Protocol for Improved Recovery in Surgery (PREMEC) has been implemeted at the colorectal surgery service. Objective: The objective of this study is to show results of the implementation of PREMEC. Materials and methods: This is an observational study of two cohorts, 516patients were included. One is a historic cohort (before the protocol) comprised by patients who underwent resective colonic and rectal surgery through an open approach from January 2017 to November 2018. The other prospective cohort includes patients treated under the PREMEC program from December 2018 through to March 2020. This cohort was divided into two groups according to the surgical approach, ...

“Background and Aims Community-acquired pneumonia is responsible for substantial mortality, and pneumococcus is commonly accepted as a major cause of pneumonia, regardless of laboratory confirmation. Child immunization programs have reported success in decreasing pneumonia mortality: directly in young children and indirectly (herd immunity) in unvaccinated adult populations in some countries. We assess changes in mortality trends for all-cause pneumonia in older adults associated with the introduction of pneumococcal vaccination for children in Peru. Methods This is a secondary analysis on administrative data collected periodically by the Peruvian Ministry of Health. An observational retrospective time series analysis was conducted using longitudinal population-based data from death certificates in Peru between 2003 and 2017. The time series includes 6 years before and 9 years after th...

It's well known that the duration of the engineering programs in Latin American countries like Peru are of order of 5 years, roughly. Commonly, the target of the fifth year of program is to carry out activities of thesis and capstone projects. Clearly these activities would demand that the student can exhibit skills and a certain level of maturity which might be crucial for a successful completion of the projects. However, the expected performance of the students might be correlated to the educational features of the institution (university, technological institute, etc) to some extent. In this manner, in this paper we try to measure the quality of education (QoE) of a Peruvian engineering program through the application of a mathematical methodology based on the individual score of students along the time where the projects take place. Furthermore, the error of the model is interpreted ...

Genealogical and productive records are the most important pillars within genetic and genomic improvement programs, where the diversity of data that can be collected must be systematized and related, to carry out an adequate statistical analysis considering all the factors that influence the variables. On the other hand, the current proposals do not contemplate the total registration of the population, both genealogical and productive records. Moreover, there is no software that allows systematizing, ordering and providing objective and measurable information in an orderly manner within the management of domestic camelids. For this reason, the construction of a computer application was proposed allowing the collection of genealogical and productive records of the entire population of both alpacas and llamas within the herds. As a result, the computer application called "Pacokipu" and "Ll...

Purpose: The study aims to investigate the nexus between total factor productivity and tourism growth in Latin American countries for time series data from 1995 to 2017. Design/methodology/approach: Using the extension of the Granger noncausality test in the nonlinear time-varying of Ajmi et al. (2015), the study points out the interconnectedness between the variables during the period. Findings: The study found nonlinear causality between the variables. Particularly, studying the conclusions for the time-varying Granger causality fashion, it can be noticed that the one-way causality from total factor productivity to tourism growth is obtained for Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and Venezuela, while the vice versa is confirmed for Chile, Ecuador and Nicaragua. Lastly, the study dissected the plots of the curve causality. Practical implications: In view of the results, some crucial po...

Future time perspective extension is an individual's perception of the psychological distance between future goals. The concept of extension can be expanded to include how far into the future an individual habitual time space extends and the diffusion of goals within that time space. This alignment and distance may be related to the individual episodic future thinking, the pre-experiencing of future events. Research in FTP and EFT are typically siloed; considering both approaches to future thinking provides not only greater insight into the two constructs but may also provide avenues for developing interventions. Participants in this study (n = 13) were recruited from a scholarship program designed to provide them with financial support as they progress from community college to high-wage careers in science and engineering. Students were transitioning from two-year programs at local comm...
