The arrival of biofuels companies in the Chira Valley, Piura, Peru, in order to produce ethanol on sugarcane cultivation, intensified the agricultural use of land and water in the mid-2000s. This article analyzes the ecological, political and social transformations that biofuels production brought about in the valley. For that purpose the paper describes the role of the state in promoting biofuels and the concomitant land and water-grabbing processes in the valley. It also explores the consequences it had for local communities and medium-sized and small farmers. Ethanol production in the Chira valley produced a profound space transformation because land and water-grabbing processes for biofuels reinforced social inequalities. Information for this article was gathered from primary and secondarysources. This is a qualitative research. Eighteen interviews were conducted in Piura and Lima.

With the rising influence of digitalization and its immense penetration intoeven everyday life, the last decade of the 20th Century addressed to a critical threshold in the successive transformation process of the spatiality in its long-term run. The advanced digital technologies of ubiquitous computing and generative design, as well as the invention of smart materials in late 90’s (particularly the nano-technological materials that emerged as the programmable matters with their ability to evolve continously) have all provoked the fluid characteristics of spatiality, and strengthen the transformative capacities of the architectural space through the emergence of computer-augmented territories. Additionally, while they are becoming as the body extensions, the advent of novel apparatuses and gadgets further enhanced the inte- gration of the corporal and incorporal bodies with the...

This article describes the fundamentals of digital image digital processing using a free-access, web user interface called Octave-Online. This interface is part of the GNU operating system software applications, as well as it is known as the equivalent of Matlab in free versión; for this reason, this tool was chosen in order to give a practical approach to the use of ten basic techniques of spatial processing of digital images. To do this, we started by collecting 8 files with image contents in JPG and with different characteristics such as high and low contrast, high and low frequency, shades of gray, and intensity of colors, to put the proposed processing techniques into practice. Subsequently, some guidelines were provided for access, upload of JPG files, creation of * .m extension files, and knowledge of certain tools offered by the Octave-Online web user in...

Studies indicate that air pollutant concentrations affect human health. Especially, Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) is the most dangerous pollutant because this is related to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, among others. Therefore, governments must monitor and control pollutant concentrations. To this end, many of them have implemented Air quality monitoring (AQM) networks. However, AQM stations are usually spatially sparse due to their high costs in implementation and maintenance, leaving large áreas without a measure of pollution. Numerical models based on the simulation of diffusion and reaction process of air pollutants have been proposed to infer their spatial distribution. However, these models often require an extensive inventory of data and variables, as well as high-end computing hardware. In this research, we propose two deep learning models. The first is a generative...

The architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) industry has brought transformations within the field. Despite the changes, traditional teaching methods such as analyzing two-dimensional plans and models are still being used in training processes, which do not effectively promote the development of spatial skills. In this context, augmented reality (AR) can be used as a tool to translate two-dimensional information into three-dimensional space. Thus, the present study explores the use of the VT-Platform AR tool to develop and reinforce spatial skills among undergraduate civil engineering students. The study follows a quantita-tive approach with a descriptive scope and an experimental design. Students in the sanitary engineering subject were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. A short-term teaching-learning methodology was proposed for the...

This study identifies the adverse context for the reproduction of peri-urban family farming in Cuautlancingo, Puebla, through a case study that analyzes the territorial transformations shaping its peri-urban area. The analysis shows that these transformations reflect a complex process of spatial, socioeconomic, and cultural reconfiguration, underpinned by dynamics of accumulation by dispossession (AxD). Urban expansion, neoliberal policies, and real-estate speculation have displaced traditional agricultural practices, fostering land-tenure changes and legalization mechanisms of ejido property that integrate agricultural land into the real-estate market. Among the findings, more than 40 % of agricultural areas were lost between 2005 and 2021 due to growth in the industrial and housing sectors. Nevertheless, agriculture persists as a sociocultural practice and a source of local identity. T...

Morris water maze (MWM) test is widely used to evaluate the learning and memory deficits in rodents. Image processing and pattern recognition can be used to analyse videos and recognize automatically the tracking in MWM. There are several commercial and free access software that allows analyzing the behavioral tasks although they also have limitations such as automation, cost, user intervention among other things. The aim of this paper was to develop a new image processing technique to automatically analyse the track of the rat in the MWM, which we called RatsTrack. The MWM test was performed with an animal model for Alzheimer, and the videos were recorded to measure the distance, time, and speed. The segmentation method based on the projection of the video frames was made for pool identification, eliminating the rat, while conserving the shape of the pool. Then, the Hough transformation...

Urban catalysis is the process in which an element of the city – building or public space – generates a multiplying impact on the characteristics and roles of other surrounding elements. This article explores the catalytic effect that the transformation of the Plaza de Armas meant for Arequipa after the earthquake of 1868 and the consequences it had on other surrounding spaces, as well as on the architecture and on the perception of the urban landscape by the inhabitants of that area. epoch. The hygienic ideas, brought by English and Italian immigrants after the construction of the railway, promoted a revolution in the way of experimenting and constructing urban space, moving from a utilitarian vision of a rural colonial town to the deliberate construction of a modern garden city. in the middle of the desert. For this research, the study of primary and secondary sources, such as docu...

In the article, the capability of the space category is considered as one of the main conditions of the matter's existence. We are referring to the length, width and height in their 3D unity. In order to increase the effectiveness of children's physical rehabilitation from a methodological point of view, we proposed to consider physical space as a conditional four-dimensional substance, including еhe subjective aspect of a specific motoric play situation perception of a child and a rehabilitation teacher. During the physical rehabilitation classes for children with musculoskeletal system disorders, after many years of practice, it was noticed that spatial parameters can be purposefully controlled to improve the correction efficiency of various motoric disorders. The authors propose to consider as a special phenomenon the corrective modelling of the internal hall architecture to solve th...

The urban expansion process generates negative effects on natural settings; this process is mainly caused by population growth that transforms natural territories for urban uses. The study aims to explain territorial changes as an effect of population growth in the urban center of Salcedo (Puno), understanding that population growth is one of the human actions that transforms natural territories and generates irreversible environmental effects. Methodologically, the study was based on the description of the current situation (diagnosis), for this the territorial analysis was carried out with the support of thematic mapping, referring to physical, spatial, and environmental aspects, to then process the information in the GIS software (ARC VIEW 3.2); subsequently, the perception of the population regarding the occupation of natural territories and deterioration of the environment was asses...

This essay explores how memory/remembering and oblivion/forgetting shape urban landscapes and collective imaginaries. Throughout history, societies have been molded by oral, written, and artistic traditions, as well as by spatial experiences and perceptions that foster attachments to place. In a continuous feedback process, the presence and absence of memory transform the built environment. Drawing on a comparative perspective between global contexts and two case studies in Lima, an international exposition known as La Feria del Hogar and the La Herradura seaside resort, we examine how memory, or its absence, influences city-making and the ways we imagine urban spaces.
