The growing demand for alternative protein sources in animal feed has increased interest in earthworm meal (EM) as a sustainable input in poultry production. This study evaluated the effect of its inclusion in the diet of native chickens on productive and economic parameters. Four treatments were applied with inclusion levels ranging from 0 to 12 % EM, recording cumulative feed intake, body weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, mortality, and profitability over a 25-day period. In addition, the nutritional composition of EM was determined through proximate analysis. The results showed significant differences (p < 0.05) in body weight, with a progressive increase from 355.51 g to 427.86 g. Feed conversion improved from 2.40 to 2.08 as the inclusion level increased, while feed intake showed an upward trend without statistical differences. No mortality was recorded and feathering w...

Technological advances applied to preclinical and clinical scientific research have significantly enabled the broadening of knowledge regarding neoplastic cells biology in the last two decades. The characterization of genetic and epigenetic alterations which are involved in carcinogenesis; the molecular subclassification of tumors; the understanding of normal and neoplastic cells interactions in the tumor microenvironment; and the description of molecular bases that explain the influence of factors such as exercise, diet and microbiota composition on cancer progression have contributed to support the importance of precision medicine in cancer. The present research reviews the so-called "hallmarks of cancer" and their "enabling characteristics", i.e. those properties inherent to cancer cells that allow to evade intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms of carcinogenesis control. This paper is a ...

In the last twenty years, the number of complete genomes that have been sequenced and deposited in data banks has grown dramatically. This abundance in sequence information has supported the creation of the discipline known as paleogenetics. In this article, without going into complex algorithms, we present some key concepts for understanding how proteins have evolved in time. We then illustrate how paleogenetic analysis can be used in biotechnology. These examples highlight the connection between chemistry and biology, two disciplines that twenty years ago seemed to be more different than what they seem to be today.

Since their origins, vascular land plants have coexisted with a wide variety of bacteria and fungi. When insects appeared, they also maintained a close relationship with them, taking on a big role with the arrival of flowering plants in the early Cretaceous period. The different evolutionary processes have led to the development of a series of interspecific interactions; some of them beneficial for both parties, such as the various pollination mechanisms throu- gh insects in many plant species. At the same time, other types of interactions have emerged with species capable of producing severe diseases in different sections of the plant. This evolutionary pressure with the inability of a defense offered by locomotion, and the lack of a defense system based on antibodies, have been the main responsible for the appearance of com- plex defense mechanisms in plants, many times rapid and effec...

Proteins are versatile biopolymers in living systems that show a great diversity of functions based on the order of their amino acids. Many protein functions, whether mechanical or regulatory, emerge from interactions with other proteins and macromolecules. This dissertation describes the development and adaptation of new computational models to investigate structural and dynamic properties of protein interactions. Two main systems were investigated: the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton and the control of DNA transcription by nuclear factor B (NF-kB). During the study of the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton, mechanical and dynamic properties were estimated using polymer theory. A simplified model of actin filament polymerization was developed. Through simulations, it was shown that actin networks containing Arp2/3 undergo abrupt releases of tension. For the study of DNA interacti...
