Objective: to identify the factors related to living alone and the magnitude of its effect on the adult population over 60 years old living in community in the city of Bogotá. Methods: cross-sectional study with secondary analysis of the Health, Well-being, and Aging Survey (SABE) - Bogota 2012. Measurements of central tendency were calculated, the means were compared with Student's t-test, the final model was adjusted for age, gender, and the odds ratios (OR) and their CI 95% were calculated to estimate the power of the relation. Results: out of the 2,000 people who participated in the SABE survey, 252 (12.6%) lived alone. The average age was 71.32 years; 64.68% were women (n = 163). The average schooling was 6.19 years (SD 0.31). When making the bivariate analysis, a statistically significant relation was found between living alone and being independent for basic and instrumental acti...

In the present work we estimate the aerosols optical thickness (AOT) in the wavelength of 0.55µm using the mod021km - level 1B Calibrated Radiances - 1km images as input of the SBDART radiative transfer model [1]. The study area is Peru in the geographic latitudes 0 to 20°S and the geographic longitudes of 82 to 68°O. The SBDART model simulates the radiative transfer in the atmosphere (scattering, absorption, emission, etc.), estimating the irradiance in the top of the atmosphere and on the Earth surface. The two-stream and Eddington approximations are used to solve the radiative transfer equation, considering a parallel plane atmosphere. This model generate equations defining the AOT of 0.55µm as a function of the reflectance at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) for the band 1 at 0.66µm of the MODIS sensor. The 0.55 µm AOT estimated by the SBDART model was verify with the 0.55µm A...

Introduction: Hip fracture in the elderly is the most common cause of hospitalization in the trauma department, causing repercussion in several clinical areas, affecting its independence. Objective: To determine the prognostic factors of poor evolution in the study population. Methods: Ambispective, correlational and non-experimental study was designed. The population consisted of all patients over 65 years of age who underwent surgery for hip fracture between January 2014 and July 2015 at the Central Hospital of the Pruvian Air Force (F.A.P). The magnitude of the association was quantified using the oddsratio, and a multivariate analysis was performed on the significant variables and a 6-month follow-up was performed. Results: The variables identified with a strong association with poor evolution were: age greater than 75 years (OR = 3,750 CI: 1,275-11,026 p = 0,016), high comorbidi...

How to ponder ‘the city’ in Peru outside of Lima? This article discusses two theoretical approaches to be taken into account in the study of intermediate cities, from the case of "Jauja Monumental": urban project which consisted in a revalorization of the architectural heritage existing at the monumental zone of this Andean city. From this case, I explore and discuss two theoretical approaches, which allow to apprehend and analyze the case with sufficient deepness and flexibility. These are, in the first place, the proposal of the "production of space" (PdE), coming from Lefebvre and the Marxist tradition. As, in the second place, the Latin American proposal of the "imaginarios urbanos" (IU) from authors such Hiernaux, Silva and Lindón. In this way, the current article aims to feed the theoretical debate on cities in Peru, from a proposal that addresses the economic-political, but a...

The Mandinga Coastal Lagoon System (MCLS) is in central Veracruz, Mexico. Over the last two decades, an ambitious development project named the Riviera Veracruzana has been implemented, aggravating existing socio-ecological problems. The study analyzed the socio-ecological scenario in this system, characterizing the socio-ecological problems and the social actors involved based on their perceptions, interests and power relations. A two-track methodological scheme was used: (1) collection of information from secondary sources associated with the MCLS and (2) ethnographic data collection with primary sources through semi-structured interviews with key social actors from different social sectors, participatory workshops with focus groups and a field diary. The results revealed a perception of high environmental degradation, socio-ecological conflicts surrounding the conservation and use of ...

The onset of puberty in girls has been occurring each time at a younger age, generating concern among parents and seeking healthcare for possible precocious puberty. Nowadays diagnosis of central precocious puberty (CPP) and early puberty onset have chronological cutoff points established over five years ago and despite secular changes described in various populations of the world. The importance of differentiating a physiological event from a pathogenic one is mainly because of the need of timely decision to begin treatment in order to prevent height compromise, reproductive system alterations and risk of future diseases like cardiovascular disease and breast cancer in adulthood. Limits for puberty onset based on biostatistics in normal population should not be applied only to establish limits of chronological age because the risk of a wrong diagnosis. In this article physiological and ...

In March of 2011, China’s National People’s Congress approved the country’s 12th Five-Year Plan, an extensive guide for social and economic planning through the year 2015. Initiated in 1953, China’s five-year plans have laid the foundation for such economic and social movements as the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and the post-Mao era of ‘reform and opening up. ’China’s five-year plans are not reliable predictive tools. Their proposed reforms are ambitious, and their content is as much a policy wish-list as a realistic plan of action. The five-year planning mechanism is useful, however, when identifying those social and economic concerns that the Chinese government considers most relevant to future growth and development. This paper identifies three challenges highlighted in the 12th Five-Year Plan that are likely to be addressed by the Chinese government in ...

The practice of journalism in Central American countries faces great challenges. The digital conversion of newsrooms has left a mark on the media in an unstable economic and political context and an increasingly competitive labor market to address a public that shows shortages. Our objective is to describe the impact of digitalization on journalistic production in media of Central America through the study of four countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras) over ten years (2012-2021). We use methodological triangulation through the use of mixed qualitative and quantitative techniques (previous studies on journalistic digitization, 102 surveys of working journalists and 14 semi-structured interviews with experts) on three thematic axes: the impact of digitization on news production, the employment situation of journalists during the digital conversion process and the effec...

In the present research we evaluated the antibacterial and antifungical activity of marine actinomycetes over pathogen of clinical origin. Likewise, it was evaluated the capacity to produce extracellular enzymes like carbohidrases, lipases and proteases. The Actinomycetes were isolated from sediments collected between September to December 2005 of Ancón (Lima) and Independencia (Ica) Bays at depths of 34 and 100 m. The isolation was performed in Casein - Starch Agar (CSA) and Marine Agar (AM) with addition of Cicloheximide (10 μg/mL). The antimicrobial evaluations were done comparing them with pathogenic antibiotic-multiresistant bacteria and fungi from clinical origin; in as much, to evaluate their multienzimatic activity several polimeric substrates were used. A total of 62 actinomycetes were isolated, 31 of there (50%) showed antibacterial activity in opposite to Staphylococcus aure...
