Peru has 13% of the Amazonian tropical forest which contains over 460 species of mammals, including the white lipped peccary or huangana (Tayassu peccari). This species is of great ecological and commercial importance and a major source of protein for the local inhabitants; however, information about the sanitary situation of this species is scarce. The aim of this study was to determine antibodies against bluetongue virus (BTV) and other Orbivirus in free-living and healthy white lipped peccaries from the Madre de Dios region, Peru. One hundred and six serum samples were evaluated to determine antibodies against BTV by competitive ELISA and other Orbivirus by immunodiffusion agar gel test. Results showed that 7.5% (8/106) of the samples had antibodies against BTV and 29.2% (31/106) against BTV/other Orbivirus. Antibodies against BTV and other Orbivirus were detected in all three localit...

The Amazon rainforest is one of the most biodiverse and at the same time most threatened ecosystems in the biosphere. Its different habitats provide a unique floristic pattern. Therefore, we aimed to identify the floristic arboreal composition in an area of the Amazon rainforest and determine the local patterns of diversity in its different habitats. This study was conducted around the Tambopata Research Center, Madre de Dios, Peru. To achieve our goals, we established 20 (50 × 30 m) plots distributed equally in four habitats, these being: Mauritia Palm Swamp, Floodplain Forest, Successional Floodplain Forest, and Tierra Firme Forest. In each plot, we collected all individuals with a diameter at a breast height ≥ of 10 cm. Subsequently, the individuals were identified and classified by cluster and diversity analysis. We found 57 families, 173 genera, 300 species, and 1958 individuals....

In this note, I report an observation of one individual of Picazuro Pigeon, Patagioenas picazuro on the right bank of the Madre de Dios River in the Taricaya Ecological Reserve, 26 km northeast of Puerto Maldonado city, province of Tambopata, department of Madre de Dios. This observation is the first confirmed record of P. picazuro for Peru. The presence of P. picazuro in Peru could be due to deforestation and an increase of croplands in the study area.

Jumping spiders of the genus Kalcerrytus inhabit the moist tropical forests of the Neotropical region. This genus includes 18 species, only both sexes are known for half of these and of K. leucodon only the female is known; the vast majority of species are registered for Brazil and there are records from Bolivia, Ecuador and French Guiana. Males are characterized by having a robust palp and more sclerotized than in other genera of the Freyina subtribe; females are distinguished by their broad epigynum with large funnel-shaped copulation openings and oblique edges. Two new species are herein described, and they represent the first record of the genus in Peru. Kalcerrytus mapinguari sp. nov. and Kalcerrytus yacuruna sp. nov. were collected in the Tambopata River region, which is characterized by its highly biodiverse tropical lowland evergreen forests. Illustrations of both male and female...

The sensitization study population and production evaluation of PET was performed from January to March 2010 in the city of Puerto Maldonado in the areas of FONAVI and ENACE, both are inhabited by people of lower-middle stratum. Beneficiaries were selected and evaluated prior knowledge about the concepts of segregating, organic and inorganic waste through the use of surveys at the beginning and end of the project. I give them a red bag for separating plastic bottles, which were collected on weekends for storage and weighing. Concepts raised FONAVI neighbors learned more about the concept of segregating but not increase the number of people who knew about organic and inorganic waste. On the other hand, neighbors ENACE who knew the word segregation decreased by 1% probably because they were more concerned in learning the concepts of organic and inorganic waste as initially I was recording ...

The purpose of this research was to analyze the representation of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by parents of children diagnosed with this condition, in Chile, about: i) the ASD as disorder, ii) their self-image as parents, iii) their sons with ASD, and iv) teachers and mental-health specialists. The methodologies by Coll-Florit y Climent (2019) and Saban et al. (2007) were used. It was demonstrated that the conceptualization of ASD is closely related to opposition to forces and nature. Regarding the teachers, a resistance to change their educational paradigm is outlined, and the mental-health specialists are conceived as passive agents.

Parasites of wild populations play an important role in the control of ecological communities andecosystems. Information about host ecology are essential to the proper analysis of the epidemiologicalprofile to be considered during process of maintenance of hosts. Moreover, helminths infecting the whitelipped peccary (Tayassu pecari) from the Peruvian Amazon are unknown, so far. The aim of the present study was to identify and determine the frequency of helminths parasitizing wild peccaries from Madre de Dios Department, Peru. Thirty-three fecal samples preserved in 10% formaldehyde were analyzed by means of the direct method and Ritchie's method (formaldehyde-ether). The total amount of positive samples were of 81.81%. Of these, 81.81% and 12.12% showed the presence of nematode and trematode eggs, respectively. Nematodes were represented by Ascaris sp. (51.51%), ancylostomatids (33.33%),...

This article on the favorable aspects of mother-child non-verbal communication in the construction of the baby’s psyche is developed from the psychoanalytic approach of Piera Aulagnier (1988; 1991) and includes her vision from the moment in which the woman wishes to be a mother until the baby’s first year of life. The concepts reviewed are primary violence, secondary violence, representation and negative desire. Likewise, the study is complemented by the theoretical vision of Fonagy (2013), Pichon-Riviere (1950), Spelt (1937) and Spitz (1959; 1963b), among others, for whom mother-child communication is essential for development of the infant’s psyche from the moment of conception.

This study examines the future orientation regarding higher education mothers wish for their children and four of its antecedents. The antecedents are: mothers’ educational attainment, mothers’ educational expectations, and mothers’ supported children’s motivation applying to two types: autonomous and controlled. Review of earlier research led to the construction of a multiple-step model indicating that mothers’ educational attainment impacts mothers’ educational expectations which in turn impacts the education-related future orientation mothers wish their children to develop indirectly, via mothers’ wish to differentially transmit to their children motivational autonomy and control. Employing Structural Equation Model (Amos 26), the mothers’ constructed model was examined with data collected from 179 mothers of Israeli Jewish children and youths, which resulted in a good...

Are geological ages, those that define the world, just a series of palimpsests? The writings over the writings made out of sediments… If so, I can rewrite spaces, turn them into something more queer, more abstract, that could allow other types or relations to be with the world. It takes months to collect as many branches to be able to weave a mountain. And I began to feel that I understood the time of the trees. Those dead branches, that had been written as “dead” from a human point of view, I can name them “new lives”, make a collaboration with them to create a new sort of landscape, one that redefines the binaries that have been dominating the world, to allow for the creation of new and different spaces. I can make a mountain that traces some sort of coordinates of a world constructed from a collaboration between culture and nature. A mountain that, perhaps, in the centuries ...

The biological properties of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from synovial fluid from horse limb joints were analysed. The samples were characterized by their peculiarity of adhering to the plastic of the culture flasks. The electromagnetic field technique (MACS) and the surface biomarker STRO-1 were used to optimize their isolation by enriching mesenchymal precursor cells (MSC-LS). To determine the expression of multipotency genes, total RNA was extracted and M-MLV reverse transcriptase was used for the cDNA, which served as a template for qPCR (quantitative PCR). qPCR was performed using the BioRad system with Sybr Green quantification. The multipotency genes quantified were OCT4 and NANOG. The cells selected using MACS with the surface biomarker STRO-1 (CMM-LS STRO-1) proliferate more rapidly than the CMM-LS obtained without purification. In addition, they showed a greater predispositio...
