BACKGROUND: AIDS in children less than 15 years is mainly acquired through vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV). Knowledge on the pathogenesis of this infection has progressively increased, and several therapeutic trials have been proposed to reduce the maternal viral load in order to prevent the vertical transmission of the virus. Zidovudine (AZT) is the drug with most cumulated clinical. The Instituto Materno Perinatal in Lima, Perú, has roughly 24 000 deliveries per year, and is pioneer in using AZT (shorted course) in pregnant women for prevention of vertical transmission of HIV OBJECTIVES: To determine the vertical transmission rate of HIV in our institute, and the impact of the preventive use of AZT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 113 children of HIV infected mothers, bom and controlled in the period 1998 to 2001. Diagnosis of perinatal inf...

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated tuberculosis deaths have decreased worldwide over the past decade. We sought to evaluate the effect of HIV status on tuberculosis mortality among patients undergoing treatment for tuberculosis in Lima, Peru, a low HIV prevalence setting. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of patients treated for tuberculosis between 2005 and 2008 in two adjacent health regions in Lima, Peru (Lima Ciudad and Lima Este). We constructed a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model to evaluate the effect of HIV status on mortality during tuberculosis treatment. Results: Of 1701 participants treated for tuberculosis, 136 (8.0 %) died during tuberculosis treatment. HIV-positive patients constituted 11.0 % of the cohort and contributed to 34.6 % of all deaths. HIV-positive patients were significantly more likely to die (25.1 vs. 5.9 %, P <...

The study explored the relationship between perceived stigma and coping strategies used in adults with HIV/AIDS. This was a cross-sectional correlational project. A total of 350 patients from a public hospital in Lima of different genders (M: 254, F: 92, NB: 4) aged between 18 and 55 years (M: 37, SD= 10.86), and, with treatment times between 6 months and 30 years, voluntarily participated. A sociodemographic form, the HIV Stigma Scale to explore stigma and the COPE questionnaire to measure coping were applied. Heterosexual sexual orientation was the majority of the cases (54 %), more than 30 % considered themselves as the main social support and 37.4% had university education. Stigma was high (28.6 %) to moderate (71.4 %), 50 % of the cases were concerned about their diagnosis being revealed, and the most used coping strategy was problem-focused (65.1 %). A negative and highly significa...

A 38-year-old man from Lima, with a history of HIV for three years in treatment, presented with a sensation of thermal elevation, nocturnal diaphoresis and productive cough with whitish expectoration; he also had a pulsating bitemporal headache and, one week before admission, he presented shortness of breath associated with sore throat, dysphonia and oppressive chest pain of intensity 6/10. Due to persistence of symptoms, he went to the Emergency Department, where the chest X-ray showed a mediastinal mass, so it was decided to hospitalize him. Chest TEM showed a left mediastinal mass, with multiple cervical and mediastinal adenopathies; and abdominal TEM showed a mass in the aortic bifurcation and multiple pararaortic and inguinal nodes. Inguinal node biopsyshowed histology compatible with Castleman’s disease. Chemotherapy was started, with favorable evolution and improvement of sympto...

Objective: To determine the association that social, clinical and therapeutic factors and coexisting diseases have with nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy in people with HIV/AIDS in 2018. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study conducted with a sample of 117 people with HIV/AIDS on antiretroviral therapy at the Hospital Daniel Alcides Carrión. The Questionnaire for the Assessment of Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy (CEAT-VIH)adapted for use in Peru was administered. The IBM SPSS Statistics V23 and logistic regression were used for the statistical analysis. Results: Seventeen point one zero percent (17.10 %) of the patients did not adhere to the therapy and 82.90 % adhered to their prescribed treatment. The variables most likely to predict nonadherence were sex (OR = 16.175, p value = 0.023) and HIV/AIDSrelated comorbidities (OR = 9.556, p value = 0.003). The initial viral ...

HIV infection makes HIV carriers susceptible to develop a group of infections that would not normally be found in an immunocompetent patient. In Colombia, a total of 11,606 cases of HIV infection were reported in 2015. This paper documents the case of a patient diagnosed with HIV infection, who developed lesions typically caused by the varicellazoster virus. These vesicular lesions evolved into phlyctenas with local necrosis. Given the case presentation, the diagnosis of skin lesions in immunocompromised or HIV-infected patients becomes a challenge for health professionals when determining an etiological diagnosis, in order to establish an appropriate treatment.

This report describes the case of two male HIV-positive patients who were not receiving treatment and whose diagnosis was confirmed by serology testing. Both patients developed midbrain stroke syndrome and the structural injury, whichwas caused by a central nervous system infection due to cerebral toxoplasmosis, was verified by brain magnetic resonance imaging. This condition was confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid serology testing.Weber’s syndrome is a very rare type of midbrain stroke syndrome with little information available on its symptoms and evolution. It was first described by Sir Herman David Weber in 1863 and is characterized by ipsilateral injury of the third cranial nerve fascicle with contralateral hemiparesis due to injury of the corticospinal and corticobulbar tracts of the cerebral peduncle. Its causes range from ischemic or hemorrhagic processes, which damage the third cr...
