Corn is a cereal of humid and temperate climate. The warm valleys of the coast are its natural growth space. In the mountains, its cultivation is possible only in sheltered ravines, where the slope of the land makes it difficult to produce on a large scale. For its massive introduction into the Andes, it was necessary to fill in the slopes and channel the waters.

To close this Allpanchis series dedicated to the V Centenary and the Andean territories, this monographic issue of the magazine brings together works on Cusco and its region. Few cities in the world and in history can exhibit the magical halo that this ancient Andean center has, with an eternal name in words and memory, even though it changes letters in its writing. All Peruvians and people from the Andes and all those who are interested in our destinations will agree that, for different reasons, Cusco has been and is a symbol of ourselves.

In 1539, don Cristobal Paullo, one of the sons of the Inca ruler Huayna Capac, was named «Inca» as a political strategy of the Spaniards. Since then, he received an encomienda. Don Cristobal was married to doña Catalina Tocto Oxica and had two sons, don Carlos Inquill Topa and don Felipe Inquill Topa. Don Carlos Inquil Topa married doña Maria Esquivel Amarilla and had only one son named Melchor Carlos Inca. The birth of Melchor was seen by the native population as a great event because an “Inca king” had been born, he even became feared by the colonial Spanish officials when they knew he was referred as the «Capac Inca». Don Melchor Carlos Inca identified himself as grandson of don Cristobal Paullo Inca and great-grandson of the Inca Huayna Capac. He became an important figure within the Cuzco›s colonial society. Don Melc...

The objective of the article is to make known the social thought of Father Isaías Vargas Bueno in the context of the Peruvian indigenist debate during the first half of the twentieth century. As a canon of Cusco and a close collaborator of Bishop Pedro Farfán, an important part of his pastoral work was linked to the study of the problems of the rural world in the Andean south and to the development of a persevering activism in favor of the native rights for more than four decades. Vargas participated in a social-Christian current that, being critical of the Marxism and the liberalism, raised a set of reformist proposals to benefit the indigenous population.

We seldom stop to think of the church as an institution whose power and importance are indisputable in social and economic life during the colonial period. The recourse to the documents produced by the church has been rather sporadic in our historiography, and there are still few attempts to use them. The edition of this document, which contains the reports that the priests of the Cuzco diocese wrote between the years 1689-90, under the orders of Bishop Manuel de Mollinedo, opens new tracks for research, and highlights the importance of the use of ecclesiastical sources. .

The so-called "anonymous person from Yucay" is an important witness to the theological-juridical discussions motivated by the conquest of the Indies. The title of the manuscript found in the National Library of Madrid indicates precisely its subject: "Opinion on the domain of the Yngas and Kings of Spain in the Kingdoms of Peru." It is specifically a relationship made to support the right of the kings of Spain over the kingdom of Peru, the last to have been conquered in the Indies. The anonymous author writes from Yucay, a place near Cusco, in the very heart of the Inca empire.

The analysis of the mechanisms of local power in the Andean area constitutes one of the great tasks that historiography still has pending for the colonial period. The importance of corregidores, priests and caciques in rural areas has been highlighted in numerous historical, ethnological and even anthropological works, but the study of the relationships between them, within what is called local power, and the reasons for conflict and forms of social, economic and political control of the peasant population still require the effort of social science researchers to explain and understand them more deeply.

The excessive importance, practically institutionalized, that is given to the Cusco architecture of the prehispanic and colonial periods, has generates indifference to the limit of contempt for the republican and contemporary period, leaving aside important facts and phenomena occurred in these last two centuries, where precisely the one of the modern architecture emphasizes. This research aims to fill, in part, that gap, privileging the phenomenon of modern architecture, posing as an objective the description of the beginnings of this phenomenon in Cusco, under the hypothesis that were the 1950 earthquake and the policy of the General government that gave rise to the elements that generated the appropriate conditions for it to make its appearance in a historical context as important and complex as Cusco, in that sense a historical-descriptive methodological approach is proposed from the...

This paper analyzes the unpublished document "Peruvian photographer Martin Chambi's personal notebook of portraits (1891-1973)", elaborated during its professional development in the city of Cuzco, between the years1920 and 1970. This notebook shows the photographer's aesthetic and technical conceptions, eventually fusing its contents with art concepts. In order to create these images, Chambi resorted to those visual resources developed by flamenco painter Rembrandt in the 17th century. Through those portraits, European aesthetics where revalued in Cuzco, handing them that time's society.

In 1987 we arrived in Cusco with the intention of carrying out an investigation on the characteristics of the State in the region. The debate with the other members of the research team, as well as our previous concerns, led us to raise the possibility of developing a field investigation aimed at accounting for how, in a particular space, the subjects develop a set of practices aimed at obtaining benefits. of the state offices present there. We seek to account for the state presence as a reference for the action of the subjects and of this as a central element for the configuration of the political space.

The former Bishopric of Cusco used to serve and encompass over 200 towns that now belong to the Departments of Cusco, Apurímac and part of Arequipa. They were the so called «pueblos de indios» («town of indigenous people») that had been formed during the colonial period. In order to delimit this portion of the land, this study focuses mainly on documents from the late 18th century. Three types of supplementary documents contributed to this research: numeric records, maps and descriptive texts. Some of these jurisdictions have changed, but we decided to maintain the division from the 1780’s, and use it to organize this study. The documentation gathered was not equally distributed; therefore, we had to resort to maps, current photographs and surveys, as well as anient photographs and engravings. Satellite images were used to get an idea of urban maps and determine details regarding ...

Although the Description takes the Viceroyalty of Peru as its subject, it is strongly focused on Lima, which occupies fully half of the text. Alongside a description of the urban plan of the city, its port, its defenses, and its communications with other regions, is a wealth of ethnographic detail about its inhabitants, plants, and the coastal environment in general. The next part reflects the author’s travels, along an itinerary from Lima to Cusco, Potosí, Buenos Aires, Tucumán, Chile, Arequipa, Ica and other coastal towns, before returning to Lima. Throughout, the author continues his ethnographic observation, though these are richest for Ica, where he had spent more time. The remainder of the account concerns the commercial connections of the viceroyalty, including Mexico and Central America. The final part is a description of ports in Panama and the Caribbean. The subject matter ...

The conquest of the letter meant for the Quechua speakers experimentation and exploration of new forms of expression. This has happened to half of the twentieth century, when in Cusco and Huanta spread the first stories and poems written by Quechuas writers. We propose that these narratives have been consolidated at the end of the twentieth century and at the beginning of the century, as independent manifestations that attain the conformation of a corpus impressive as well as representative. This research aims to increase the visibility of narrative Quechua’s corpus therefore, we take as a reference temporary 19802015 and sets its studies in the Quechua production of Peru. These narratives are part of the country’s modernization from the XX century; essentially written manifestations not their oral forms, although inevitably we will link to them.
