Objective: To develop a simplified anthropometric equation of total body water based on abdominal circumference and age based on Watson's formula. Material and methods: Analytical and cross-sectional study, based on data from the 2022 national demographic health survey (population=32,066). The variables were: total body water, age, sex, abdominal perimeter. Neural networks (multilayer perceptron), multiple linear regression, and Spearman correlation were used to compare the results with the 2021 survey population (population=31,966). Results: The multilayer perceptron had a relative error of 0.17 and 0.12 in women and men, respectively. The regression equation in women was: 8.083 + (0.308*abdominal circumference) + (-0.084*age). In men: 12.132 + (0.338*abdominal circumference) + (-0.166*age). The correlation of both equations was compared with a control group (ENDES-2021), finding very s...

Since Paul Lazarsfeld’s first study on the influentials, carried out in the forties, research on opinion leaders have been developed mainly in the political field. Nevertheless, in his studies, Lazarsfeld focused his attention on other areas such as fashion. Lazarsfeld identified influentials as those people with a “leadership almost invisible and certainly unconscious, face to face; close, informal and daily”, being able to influence in their relatives’ voting and purchasing decisions. These opinion leaders’ or influentials prescribing ability was and is today very powerful and of great interest for its study. Clearly, the influence of the Internet in society has changed the way we communicate, interact and consume. In the fashion area, a research study about the influentials after the advent of the Internet has not been done yet. As a consequence, the main goal of this resear...

The objective of the present study was to predict carcass weight (PC) in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) at the age of slaughtering (16±2 weeks), considering their biometric measurements. The following measures and weights were taken before and after the slaughter of 150 male guinea pigs of the Cieneguilla genotype: live body weight (PV), body length (LC), head length (LCA), head width (AC), loin length (LL), loin width (AL), chest girth (PT), thigh perimeter (PM), thigh length (LM), arm perimeter (PB), arm length (LB), and rump middle square (CMG), as well as the carcass weight (PC). The data were analyzed to determine the best regression equation and to establish the best predictive linear model of carcass weight. The «Step-Wise Regression» process of the SAS statistical package was used. The combinations of independent variables in the model revealed that the variables PV, PT, AC, an...

The present study has two objectives. On the one hand, the psychometric properties of the Wagnild and Young (1993) Resilience Scale are analyzed, and on the other hand, the values obtained were compared according to sex and age of the participants. The sample were 333 university students from a private university in Arequipa (Peru), of which approximately half were men and the other half women, with an average age of 17 years. The results of confirmatory factor analysis suggest a four-factor structure: Interest, Energy and strength, Purpose identity and Decision, with adequate goodness of fit indices. However, for the dimensions of Decision and Energy and strength, internal consistency had inadequate values. Comparative data indicate that women and 18-year-old students have higher scores on some resilience factors than men and 16-year-old students. Results suggest the need for extendi...

Objective: To describe the trends in the frequency of obesity and its relationship with some socioeconomic factors in women of childbearing age in Peru. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study of secondary data, using the databases of the Encuesta Nacional Demográfica en Salud (ENDES) from 2005 to 2018. The frequency of women with obesity was estimated for each year and compared using the confidence intervals at 95% (95% CI). The magnitude of association was compared between place, age and parity, place of residence, level of education and wealth index. Results: An increase in obesity was observed in women of childbearing age from 17.72% (95% CI: 16.24-19.32) in 2005 to 32% (95% CI: 30.46-34.42) in 2018. The prevalence of type I obesity increased from 9.07% (95% CI 8.09-10.16) in 2005 to 22.15% (95% CI 15.19-16.48) in 2018. It was observed a continuous increase in the prevalence of ty...

This study evaluates the predictive capacity of sociodemographic variables of the mother over the level of maternal secure base scripts. The participants were 83 mothers from 15 to 45 years old (M = 24.72, SD = 8.70).The level of maternal secure base was evaluated through the Narratives of Adult Attachment (Waters & Waters, 2006). The results show that the participants do not have an adequate level of secure base script. It was found that interaction between the age of the mother and the educational attainment level, partly explains the level of the maternal secure base script (R2 = .19). The protector role of the level of educational attainment for older mothers to have a higher level of secure base scripts isproposed.

Objective. To compare the efficacy of three dental methods (Demirjian, modified Gleiser-Hunt, and morphometric analysis) based on the root development of the lower third molars to determine age estimation on 13 to 23-years-old participants. Methods. The sample included 978 orthopantomographs of people with known chronological age and sex (484 men and 494 women). The root development of the molars was classified according to the indicated methods. The concordance of the sample was performed based on a second classification of 10% of the sample. The stages of root development - obtained with the aforementioned methods - and the chronological age were correlated to obtain: 1) the correlation and determination index 2) the regression formulas that predict age and 3) the difference between the real chronological age and the estimated dental age for each method. Results. The modified Gleiser-H...

The article presents aging as a multifactorial, progressive biological process shaped by intersecting theories, with special focus on oxidative stress and free radical involvement. The Free Radical Theory of Aging posits that reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced both endogenously and via environmental exposures, induce cumulative molecular damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA impacting cellular and tissue integrity. This oxidative stress contributes to age-related degenerative diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s. Although antioxidants (both endogenous enzymes and exogenous dietary compounds) offer protective mechanisms against ROS, empirical evidence on their efficacy in extending lifespan remains inconclusive, largely due to bioavailability challenges and systemic complexity. The article also addresses mitochondrial dysfunction and genomic instability especially mitochondrial DN...

The purpose of this work was to argue the problem of population aging in Cuba from the approach of the Cuban media. The central methodology used was the systematic review of publications related to the objective theme, leveraged in the use of the historical-logical and analysis-synthesis methods; that allowed to systematize the causes that condition this socio-cultural phenomenon from a multifactorial analysis, which describes the basic factors that condition the demographic problem in question. Likewise, to warn about the consequences for the country in the short, medium and long term; if the diagnosed situation continues, analyze the role of the media to mitigate this situation, explain the impact at the media level of the problem and assess the contribution of the national media in the prevention and comprehensive dissemination of the issue; Lastly, analyze the treatment of informatio...

The onset of puberty in girls has been occurring each time at a younger age, generating concern among parents and seeking healthcare for possible precocious puberty. Nowadays diagnosis of central precocious puberty (CPP) and early puberty onset have chronological cutoff points established over five years ago and despite secular changes described in various populations of the world. The importance of differentiating a physiological event from a pathogenic one is mainly because of the need of timely decision to begin treatment in order to prevent height compromise, reproductive system alterations and risk of future diseases like cardiovascular disease and breast cancer in adulthood. Limits for puberty onset based on biostatistics in normal population should not be applied only to establish limits of chronological age because the risk of a wrong diagnosis. In this article physiological and ...

The aim of this study was to develop a specific dental age estimation formula for adults in Lima based on Lamendin´s, Prince – Ubelaker´s and Ubelaker – Parra´s methods. The sample consisted in 50 healthy permanent one-root teeth of adult patients between 25 to 75 years old treated in health centers in Lima city. The applicability of the three dental methods (Lamendin, Prince - Ubelaker and Ubelaker-Parra) were validated to estimate the age of the sample. This was done using the Wilcoxon test that showed that the ages estimated by both, Prince – Ubelaker`s and Ubelaker – Parra`s methods did not have significant difference from the real age, compared with the results of Lamendin that actually showed significant differences. Age estimation was better with Prince – Ubelaker`s method (r = 0.935) compared with Ubelaker – Parra`s method (r = 0.918), so the first method was the m...
