Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition that is related to various etiologies. However, an infrequent one is acute infection by hepatotropic viruses. We present the case of a 33-year-old man who consulted the emergency department for abdominal pain and generalized jaundice. Serological studies reported acute infection by Hepatitis B Virus; The patient was managed with clinical and paraclinical monitoring of liver function tests together with supportive therapy with dextrose. The patient persisted with increasing abdominal pain and cholestasis, so they were considered differential. Magnetic resonance imaging of the upper abdomen showed acute non-biliary pancreatitis that was concluded secondary to the infectious process due to hepatitis B after ruling out other causes. The patient did not require changes in management with improvement in liver function tests, so he was discharged ...

Myxopapillary ependymoma is a slow-growing benign neoplasm that accounts for 13 % of all spinal ependymomas. Clinically, it often presents with long developing radicular syndromes and motor, sensory, urinary, and gait abnormalities. This report describes the case of a 14-year-old female who experienced a six-month history of lumbosacral pain, which radiated to the lower limbs during the last month. She was admitted to the emergency department at Hospital Belén de Trujillo, Peru, with crural paraparesis, motor function graded as 3/5 on the Daniels Scale, and urinary retention. Magnetic resonance imaging with contrast revealed a lumbar lesion consistent with ependymoma. Consequently, a laminectomy and total resection of the lesion were performed to prevent local recurrence and cerebrospinal fluid dissemination. At the most recent postoperative follow-up, the patient demonstrated good func...

Mandibular condyle infection, septic arthritis, is a disease characterized by pain, fever, edema, and functional decrease of the temporomandibular joint. It predominates in adult men and its etiology includes different factors: systemic diseases, autoimmune diseases, local trauma and spread of infections in the head and neck region. A clinical case of septic arthritis in the temporomandibular joint as a complication of infectious facial cellulitis is presented. Treatment consisted of antibiotic therapy and serial arthrocentesis with the aim of performing an intra-articular cleaning, accompanied by early mobilization of the joint, ideally with the support of a kinesiology team. In addition, long-term and periodic controls are very important in order to obtain a better clinical result in the patient, control in the long term, minimizing the risks of presenting a decrease in mandibular dyna...

The role of excess and deficit of thyroid hormone in the pathogenesis of mood disorders has been recorded for almost two centuries. Thyroid pathologies, the most numerous among endocrine diseases, are causally associated with psychiatric pathology in a significant percentage of cases. Specifically, hyperthyroidism produces multiple psychopathological manifestations of anxious and depressive type, manic episodes and, infrequently, psychosis. Although the influence of the thyroid axis on the neural pathways of norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin plays a fundamental neurobiological role in these phenomena, there are still multiple underlying mechanisms to be elucidated. Given the need for a broad and comprehensive differential diagnosis between primary and secondary psychiatric pathologies, we report the case of a 52-year-old patient with psychotic depression in whom the late diagnosis ...

Venous thromboembolism represents a prominent cause of maternal morbidity and mortality with an incidence of 0.5 to 2.2 out of 1 000 pregnancies. Pregnant patients have 5 times increased risk compared with non-pregnant women; it is the second cause of death in this population. We present the case of a 27-year-old pregnant woman with 11 weeks of gestation with no significant history who was admitted to the Emergency Department due to 24 hours of pain, increased volume of the lower limb and slight functional impotence for walking. Venous Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs revealed deep vein thrombosis of the left lower limb. The diagnosis and management of deep vein thrombosis during pregnancy and the need for timely recognition are discussed.

The mandibular fracture is one of the most common types in pediatric maxillofacial trauma. The main objective of fracture management is the restoration of bone shape and function. Incomplete fractures are more common due to bone elasticity; so, usually the treatment of fractures in children is conservative. Due to the progress on materials bone reparation and technological improvement, currently the proportion of children treated with open reduction and internal fixation (RAFI) has increased. The use of miniplates and miniscrews are the gold standard treatment for craniomaxillofacial semirigid fixation. One alternative are the resorbable materials, which do not require the removal and are gradually degrade. This is a considerable advantage for the management of mandibular fractures in children. We present the case of a 6-year-old patient who suffered a parasympathetic mandibular and cond...

Fibrous hyperplasia is a benign condition characterized by the proliferation of fibrous and mucosal tissue in the lining of the oral cavity. Uncontrolled growth can lead to alterations in speech or feeding function, as well as aesthetic deformities. Lesions are typically removed with primary or anatomical closure if possible. In extensive cases, removal of the mucosal coverage requires tissue with its own vascularity. Here, we present the case of a 17-year-old male with a four-year history of multiple tumor formations dependent on the dentoalveolar mucosal ridge of both maxillae, resulting in tooth loss and severe mobility of the remaining teeth. The patient experienced no pain or bleeding, and consumed only liquid or soft foods due to chewing limitations. The reconstruction of the dentoalveolar ridge of both maxillae and the palate required a free fasciocutaneous flap dependent on the r...

Unilateral condylar hyperplasia is a non-neoplastic and self-limiting overgrowth of the mandibular condyle that usually begins during puberty, predominates in women and is considered an aberration of the normal growth mechanism of the condyle. This abnormal growth continues until the mid-20s and produces mandibular prognostism, facial and occlusal asymmetry with progressive displacement of the mandible to the contralateral side. The purpose of this report was to describe the cases of two female patients (23 and 25 years old) with unilateral condylar hyperplasia treated with high condylectomy and orthognathic surgery, with emphasis on clinical and imaging aspects and late post-surgical follow-up. Both patients presented satisfactory cosmetic results, without pain / noise related to the temporomandibular joint, mouth opening within the normal range, and class I canine and molar relationshi...
