Telemedicine describes the electronic delivery of medical data for diagnosis, treatment and medical education to the patient at home through the use of information and communication technologies. In just a few weeks, the current global situation related to COVID-19 has generated unprecedented pressures on the health system and transformed the practice of palliative care. The National Center for Pain Control and Palliative Care's home visiting program adopted the teleconsultation modality in March 2020 and a pilot plan for evaluating telemonitoring technology was established. During the initial evaluation period between March and July 2020, a physician specializing in Palliative Medicine reviewed the vital signs within 24 hours of transmission and conducted a teleconsultation of the patient allowing analysis of the data received. A total of 14 patients were monitored for an average of 10....

Results. The data showed that 52% of the sample had a relatively low risk of caries. As the infant develops through the stages of development, thepredisposition to caries risk will increase, with no major difference according to gender. The real probability of avoiding new carious lesions in the study sample was 68% and each of the IDCs ...

Plagiarism is a serious, yet widespread type of research misconduct, and is often neglected in developing countries. Despite its far-reaching implications, plagiarism is poorly acknowledged and discussed in the academic setting, and insufficient evidence exists in Latin America and developing countries to inform the development of preventive strategies. In this context, we present a longitudinal case study of seven instances of plagiarism and cheating arising in four consecutive classes (2011–2014) of an Epidemiology Masters’ program in Lima, Peru, and describe the implementation and outcomes of a multifaceted, “zero-tolerance” policy aimed at introducing research integrity. Two cases involved cheating in graded assignments, and five cases correspond to plagiarism in the thesis protocol. Cases revealed poor awareness and high tolerance to plagiarism, poor academic performance, an...

The historic center of Lima is a cultural heritage of great interest, currently in an advanced state of decay and in need of an appropriate and effective protection. This article concerns a presentation given in Lima for the “V Jornadas de Conservación y Restauración” organized by Yachay Wasi (Instituto Superior de Conservación y Restauración) on August 30-31, 2013, later implemented by new research advancements on the analysis of residential buildings and urban fabric transformation. Research first phase has developed a methodological approach whose goal was the identification of endagered heritage, prior to every rehabilitation program. Second phase, in course of development, concerns themes related to the widening of the concept of ‘cultural heritage’, which arises the issue of preserving ‘minor’ architectural heritage, shaping the features of the space of the old city...

We designed and tested the feasibility of the Smoking Cessation Training Program for Oncology Practice (STOP), a hybrid (face-to-face plus web-based) educational intervention to enhance Spanish-speaking cancer care professionals’ (CCPs’) ability to provide brief smoking prevention and cessation counseling to cancer patients and survivors. Changes in the CCPs’ competencies (knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, and practices toward smoking and smoking cessation services) were assessed post-training. Sixty CCPs from one major cancer center in Colombia (n = 30) and Peru (n = 30) were invited to participate in a 4-module hybrid training program on smoking prevention and cessation. Demographic and pre- and post-test evaluation data were collected. The training’s acceptability was measured after each module. Bivariate analysis was conducted using Wilcoxon signed-rank test to compare the ...

To estimate the association of the Programa Juntos with institutional delivery and postnatal care in Peru, 2014–2023. Methods. Observational, retrospective, and cross-sectional study using data from the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) 2014–2023. A total of 37,690 women with live births were included. The exposure variable was enrollment in the Programa Juntos. Annual one-to-one propensity score matching (PSM) without replacement and with a caliper of 0.05 was applied, adjusting for sociodemographic and geographic covariates. Balance was assessed using absolute standardized bias (<10%) and overlap. The average treatment effect on the treated (ATET) was estimated for institutional delivery and postnatal care within seven days, with 95% confidenc...
