Currently, development teams face many challenges when designing user interfaces. There are more, and more, new methodologies, processes and techniques to make user-centered design. However, these teams often lack specific techniques or methods to accomplish these designs themselves in a real-world development process. The following is a proposal of a user-centered design approach through a case study. The approach was applied to successfully redesign the main menu of an ATM interface of a Peruvian Bank. In this iteration, the convenience of aligning the proposal with proven methodologies such as Design Thinking was observed. This proposal continues to be applied successfully in the development process of the ATM team of said bank.

Nowadays, the design of usable interfaces is a challenge for every software developer. Little or no consideration of the user-centered design guidelines make systems difficult to use, and the embedded systems in the Automated Teller Machines (ATM) are not an exception to this problem. In order to improve and ensure the usability of the user interfaces of software in this domain, several user-centered design methods and techniques were analyzed and applied to formulate a framework for guiding a design process. The paper provides an analysis of a variety of methods used in the self-service technologies domain and by formal design methodologies; for instance, the standard ISO 13047. In addition, the article describes the process followed to select the most appropriate user-centered design methods that fit the specific ATM domain. This analysis includes surveys and expert judgment, conducted...

Abstract — In this project, a design for an automated mechanism is presented for implementation in textile manufacturing processes, where an integrated system for textile fiber recognition based on artificial intelligence (AI) was added. The mechanical design of the machine was studied in terms of force, providing a robust and efficient structure that supports the integration of sensors and cameras for real - time image capture of the processed fibers. Additionally, this design included a precise feeding system and a transport mechanism that ensured the stability and correct positioning of the fibers during analysis. In parallel, an AI model was implemented to identify and classify textile fibers based on their color characteristics. A simulated dataset was generated , where each type of fiber was represented by a specific color (red, green, blue, yellow), and a simple neural network w...

In manufacturing environments, the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential to prevent workplace accidents. Despite this need, existing PPE monitoring methods remain largely manual and suffer from limited coverage, significant errors, and inefficiencies. This article focuses on addressing this deficiency by designing a computer vision desktop application for automated monitoring of PPE use. This system uses lightweight YOLOv8 models, developed to run on the local system and operate even in industrial locations with limited network connectivity. Using a Lean UX approach, the development of the system involved creating empathy maps, assumptions, product backlog, followed by high-fidelity prototype interface components. C4 and physical diagrams helped define the system architecture to facilitate modifiability, scalability, and maintainability. Usability was verified us...

Usability is nowadays an aspect that determines the success of any software product, and the embedded systems in the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are not the exception. This fact represents a challenge for the software developers that are forced to guarantee the design of usable interfaces. Some attempts to achieve the required degree of usability in a software of this domain, involve the application of user-centered techniques in the elaboration process of the design proposals for the functionality of the ATMs. However, there is a lack of a formal methodological procedure. In this research, a systematic review was conducted to identify the approaches that are used to guide the design process of ATM interfaces. From a total of 492 studies, only 10 were selected as relevant. Although usability is an important aspect, only a small number of authors report the use of frameworks, that ar...

In a global context, where the construction industry is a major source of CO2 emissions and resource use, is dependent on concrete and its risks, and lags behind in digitalization, a clear need arises to direct architecture towards more practical, efficient, and sustainable practices. This research introduces an alternative technique for building timber space structures, aiming to expand its applications in areas with limited access to advanced technologies such as CNCs with more than five axes and industrial robotic arms. This involves reconfiguring economic and ecological constraints to maximize the structural and architectural advantages of these systems. The method develops a parametric tool that integrates computational design and manufacturing based on two-axis laser cutting for shells with segmented hexagonal plywood plates. It uses a modified ‘half-lap joint’ mechanical joint...

The spatial heterogeneity of soil properties has a significant impact on crop growth, making it difficult to adopt site-specific crop management practices. Traditional laboratory-based analyses are costly, and data extrapolation for mapping soil properties using high-resolution imagery becomes a computationally expensive procedure, taking days or weeks to obtain accurate results using a desktop workstation. To overcome these challenges, cloud-based solutions such as Google Earth Engine (GEE) have been used to analyze complex data with machine learning algorithms. In this study, we explored the feasibility of designing and implementing a digital soil mapping approach in the GEE platform using high-resolution reflectance imagery derived from a thermal infrared and multispectral camera Altum (MicaSense, Seattle, WA, USA). We compared a suite of multispectral-derived soil and vegetation indi...

Motor Imagery based BCIs (MI-BCIs) allow the control of devices and communication by imagining different mental tasks. Despite many years of research, BCIs are still not the most accurate systems to control applications, due to two main factors: signal processing with classification, and users. It is admitted that BCI control involves certain characteristics and abilities in its users for optimal results. In this study, spatial abilities are evaluated in relation to MI-BCI control regarding flexion and extension mental tasks. Results show considerable correlation (r=0.49) between block design test (visual motor execution and spatial visualization) and extension-rest tasks. Additionally, rotation test (mental rotation task) presents significant correlation (r=0.56) to flexion-rest tasks.

ATM systems are part of the devices that have more managed approach and facilitate the use of financial services for people. However, on occasions, displayed interfaces can be frustrating to use. Usability is a principle that contemplates such situations, so it is necessary to have appropriate tools to evaluate ease of use on the products. For this reason, we present a revised version of eighteen usability heuristics proposed for ATM applications. In this paper, we describe the process that is followed from the collection of information, creation of the heuristic set, validation and refinement.

We describe the design and development of sensor nodes, based on Edge computing technologies, for the processing and classification of events detected in physiological signals such as the electrocardiographic signal (ECG is the electrical signal of the heart), temperature, heart rate, and human movement. The edge device uses a 32-bit Tensilica microcontroller-based module with the ability to transmit data wirelessly using Wi-Fi. In addition, algorithms for classification and detection of movement patterns were implemented to be implemented in devices with limited resources and not only in high-performance computers. The Internet of Things and its application in smart environments can help non-intrusive monitoring of daily activities by implementing support vector machine (SVM is a machine learning algorithm) for implementation in embedded systems with low hardware resources. This thesis work begins with the revision of state of the art about active magnetic bearings (AMB), the mathematical methods used to obtain geometric and physical parameters that will influence in the mechanical, electrical design and control system proposed by this prototype. The control system will activate the magnetic bearing to center its shaft, for which it is joined a variable load in order to study the best control performance under different load over the rotor proposed by requirements. When the rotor is not controlled in its own axis even though variable load, a position error will occur that will be corrected by the program of a control system that will center the shaft (rotor). For this design was evaluated generalized AMB models [2], [3], [4] to validate the best identification for this design, furthermore as a consequence to get the best performance for the control system a...
