Objective: To validate an explanatory model of cognitive functioning in older adults, based on inhibitory control, working memory and processing speed. Method: Explanatory-correlational design. 128 people between 60 and 85 years of age were evaluated with working memory and processing speed tests of the WAIS-IV intelligence scale, Stroop Test and Neuropsi. Results: Two models of structural equation analysis were applied. In model 1, with the total sample, inhibitory control better explains the cognitive functioning in adults aged 60 to 85 years (β=0.22; p<0.538). Model 2, which included age as a control variable, divided the sample into two age groups, and found that processing speed best predicted cognitive functioning in adults aged 60-70 years (β=2.329; p=0.030). but no variable predicted cognitive functioning in adults aged 71 to 85 years. The second model showed better fitting ...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between menopausal status and female sexual function among mid-aged women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study of 221 sexually active HIV-infected women ages 40 to 59 years, based on a secondary analysis of a three-hospital survey in Lima, Perú. We classified menopausal status according to Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop criteria (STRAW+10); this exposure variable was categorized as binary (non-postmenopausal and postmenopausal) and-for exploratory analysis-as multinomial (pre-, peri-, and postmenopausal). We defined low sexual function (LSF) using the 6-item Female Sexual Function Index (total score ≤19). Socio-demographic and clinical variables were assessed, including age, used highly active antiretroviral therapy scheme, disease duration, depressive symptoms, and co-morbiditi...

Psychological distress (PD) involves a deficit in emotional capacities. Social support (SS), structural and functional, is a protective factor for health as it reduces stress and distress. Previous literature indicates that both variables are related and vary throughout adulthood. Based on a cross-sectional study (n=5388; 53.7% women; age: 18-98, M=43.15; SD=17.38), we aimed to analyze whether age is a moderating factor in the relationship between SS and PD in adulthood. A deficit in SS is related to PD, and age moderates between them. The relationship between PD and structural SS is more potent in older adults, while instrumental and informational SS is more robust in younger adults. Affective SS is the best predictor of PD regardless of age.

Paneth cells have an important function in the defense and protection mechanisms of the gastrointestinal tract in several animal species through secretions, e.g. as lysozime, secretory phospholipase A2 and defensins. The aim of this study was to identify the Paneth cells in the small intestine of baby alpacas. Eighteen culled animals between 1 and 21 days of age were used. Duodenum, jejunum and ileum samples were taken. Samples were fixed in 10% formalin, processed and stained with haematoxylin-eosin (H-E) and Masson trichromic. An anti-lizozime polyclonal antibody was used for immunohistochemistry. Typical Paneth cells were not identified with H-E and Masson trichromic stains, whereas lysozime granules were identified in the base of the crypts of Lieberkühn of duodenum, jejunum and ileum by immunohistochemistry since the first day of age. The number in jejunum and ileum was greater bet...

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) represent a number of highly reactive oxygen-derived by-products generated by the normal mitochondrial respiration and other cellular metabolic reactions. ROS can oxidize macromolecules including lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Under physiological condition, the cellular levels of ROS are controlled by several antioxidant enzymes. However, an imbalance between ROS production and detoxification results in oxidative stress, which leads to the accumulation of macromolecular damage and progressive decline in normal physiological functions. Oxidative deterioration of DNA can result in lesion that are mutagenic and contribute to aging and age-related diseases. Therefore, methods for the detection of ROS and oxidative deterioration of macromolecules such as DNA in cells provide important tool in aging research. Here, we described protocols for the detection of...

Background: A substantial number of children in the world are regularly subjected to physical punishment by their parents as a method of upbringing. Evidence suggests that it has negative effects on the development of brain function. However, evidence regarding its association with verbal communication is limited and heterogeneous. It is also unknown whether the effects are the same in both boys and girls; especially in the contexts of developing countries, where the highest rates of physical punishment are found. Objective: This investigation aimed at analyzing the association between physical punishment administered by both fathers and mothers and effective verbal communication among children aged 9–36 months according to sex. Methods: A secondary analytical cross-sectional study was conducted based on the 2018–2019 Peruvian Demographic and Family Health Survey. Physical punishment...

Depression is regarded as a widespread mental condition that affects people of all ages. It has a negative impact on a variety of aspects of life, including mood, vigor, and interests in enjoying activities. In the most severe cases, depression can also result in suicide. creating the chance for collaboration between mental health professionals and the use of technical tools to enhance the assessment of the severity of depression to offer the patient with an ideal clinical diagnosis and an appropriate referral to begin treatment. The COVID-19 epidemic in Peru has decreased face-to-face interaction and quick access to medical professionals, making it more difficult for patients’ mental health to be identified or treated effectively, which results in the disease becoming chronic, psychological suffering, and high costs associated with specialized care. The implementation of a technology ...

This paper involves a practical approach to perform quality-control/quality-assessment of concrete using vibration-based NDT. The first component is the analysis of compressive strength and dynamic E-modulus of concrete samples from various construction projects. The second component involves continuous measurements of E-Moduli as a function of curing time in laboratory-controlled specimens. The experimental program allowed proposing a correlation to predict the expected static and dynamic E-modulus at 28 days from their measurement at any instant of the curing process. A similar relationship is proposed to predict compressive strength at 28 days based on the dynamic E-modulus measured at earlier ages.

During aging, genetic and environmental factors carry an increased risk of diseases that facilitate the loss of function. High-intensity resistance training has been shown to lead to health benefits in older adults, however, its use is limited in this population. Recently, hypoxic resistance training (HRT) has been presented as a viable alternative in rehabilitation therapy for older adults, however, information is scarce in this regard. Thus, the objective of this study was to collect current knowledge about HRT in older adults, as well as the benefits for their health. To do this, a selective search was carried out for articles published in the last 6 years on the effects of HRT in older people in the Pubmed database. The search resulted in 227 articles, of which 18 were selected for this review. Three types of training were identified: blood flow restriction therapy (BFRT), resistance...

During the COVID-19 pandemic, older people have been the group with the highest mortality rate, especially those who require long-term care for having lost their functional ability. These people are living at home with their family or in a nursing home. It has been described that older people may develop an oligosymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection or particular symptoms of the disease. Therefore, symptom-based screening is not the most recommended strategy in this scenario. Since it is necessary to detect early cases in the elderly population, this research work analyzes and proposes the best available alternatives for attaining such goal.
