Introduction. Weak grip strength is a well-known associated factor with disability and physical performance, but this association is controversial in older adults aged 80 years or more. Objective. To determine the association between prehensile strength and functional dependence and physical performance among adults older than 80 years. Methods. This research was an analytical, cross-sectional study, conducted in 147 older adults aged 80 years or more, from Naval Peruvian Service. We included assessments about muscle strength, physical performance, disability, anthropometric variables, and nutritional assessment. Results. We found a significant association between weak grip strength and dependence for basic activities of daily living (aOR: 2.81, 95% CI: 1.32 to 10.11), as well as altered physical performance (aOR: 4.32, 95% CI: 1.97 to 9.59), these associations were independent of age, n...

Objective: To determine the association between depression and functional dependence in elderly patients of the Centro Geriátrico Naval (Peruvian naval medical center for elderly people). Materials and methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional, analytic study conducted from a secondary data analysis, with a convenience sample size of 625 elderly people. Results: In the linear regression analysis which predicts functional dependence according to the Barthel Index, it was found that, for each point in the Yesavage questionnaire, the Barthel Index score decreases 4.8±1.82 points and, for every 5 points, it decreases 29.99±3.62 points. In relation to the Lawton Index, significant outcomes were found regarding age, gender, military rank, physical performance, grip strength and depression. Conclusions: The results show an association between depression and functional dependence in performin...

Objective: To determine the association between the exposure to scuba diving during military service and the development of neurocognitive disorders in elderly people. Materials and methods: A retrospective analytical study, derived from the database analysis of the study "Fragility and functional dependence in older adults" conducted between 2010 and 2015 on an outpatient basis by the staff of the geriatrics service of the Centro Médico Naval del Perú (Peruvian Naval Medical Center). The chi-square test, p<0.05 and 95 % CI were used to establish said association, and the Poisson model was used as regression model. Results: A total of 1,020 participants were analyzed. Three hundred twenty-two (322 [42.42 %]) participants were between 71 and 80 years of age. Two hundred forty (240 [31.62 %]) had neurocognitive disorders. Factors associated with neurocognitive disorders were: age ran...

The objective of this study is to examine the prevalence and factors associated with frailty in Peruvian Navy Veteran's older adults and family members. A total of 311 non-institutionalized men and women aged 60 years and older, from the Geriatrics Service of the Peruvian Navy Medical Center (Centro Médico Naval “Cirujano Mayor Santiago Távara”) were assessed between May and October 2010. Frailty was defined as having two or more of the following components: 1) unintentional weight-loss, 2) weakness (lowest 20% in grip-strength), 3) self-reported exhaustion, and 4) slow walking speed (lowest 20% 8-meter walk-time in seconds). Additionally, information on socio-demographic factors, medical conditions, depressive symptoms, disability, and cognitive function were obtained. Of the 311 participants, 78 (25.1%) were not frail, 147 (47.3%) were pre-frail, and 86 (27.8%) were frail. Using ...

ABSTRACT Introduction: Prostate cancer is considered a predominant type of neoplasia and aging is a factor for chemotherapeutic toxicity, which can increase due to chronic diseases, particularly diabetes. Despite all this knowledge, there are no studies to evaluate the association between diabetes and the risk of chemotherapeutic toxicity in these patients. Objective: To determine the association between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and the risk of chemotherapy toxicity in in older adults with prostate cancer in the Geriatric Service of the Peruvian Naval Medical Center. Material and methods: Analytical retrospective cohort study and secondary database analysis. The adverse effects of chemotherapy and the associated factors of 161 retired sailors with prostate cancer were evaluated between 2013 and 2015. Cox Regression Model for Adjusted Toxicity was constructed for antecedents of diabetes, ...

Objective. Was to determine the factors associated with the lack of adherence to ophthalmological treatment in patients with glaucoma, at a private clinic. Methods. Observational, analytical and crosssectional design. The sample consisted of 106 patients with a previous diagnosis of glaucoma. The statistical analysis was carried out with STATAv.16., the Student’s t test, the Chi square test and the logistic regression analysis were performed with a level of significance of 5%. Results. The average age of the patients was 66,6 ± 13,8 years, the majority were women (59,43%), from the coast (62,26%), with a high school degree education (38,68). The frequency of poor adherence to ophthalmological treatment was 69,81% (n = 74). The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that accessibility to medications (OR = 0,10; 95% CI = 0,03-0,32) and...

Introduction. The current COVID-19 pandemic has forced medical education to change to a virtual modality. This can influence the quality of teaching and the perception that students have about older adults. Objective. Our objective is to evaluate the perception of the self-report fulfillment of geriatric competencies (SRFGC) in medical students from universities in Lima-Peru, comparing face-to-face and virtual techniques. Methods. A cross-sectional study was designed including students from 3 universities in Lima, Peru who have taken the geriatrics course in person or virtually, measuring the main variables such as ACCG according to the recommendations of the pogoe web portal and ageing the UCLA-GAS scale. Averages and standard deviations were calculated for numerical variables and frequency for categorical variables. Bivariate analysis was also performed between ACCG and the rest of the...
