Mr. Editor We have read with special attention and interest the article by Condemayta et al (2018), where they present the results of an epidemiological study on the prevalence of infection by the intestinal parasite "Balantidium coli" and the risk factors associated with its transmission. in humans and pigs in two populations of the Acora District, province and Department of Puno, Peru. In general, we agree with the content of the article. However, we wish to comment on the taxonomic and systematic status of "Balantidium coli", and the corresponding nomenclature of the enteroparasitic disease it causes, which we consider require updating in light of the new evidence and findings presented in the scientific literature of the area, especially those of the molecular type. In this sense, it should first be indicated that the genus Balantidium belongs to the Phylum Ciliophora (Class Litostom...

Diarrhea is the most common sign of gastrointestinal disease in young primates kept in captivity. The study aimed to isolate and identify bacterial species present in young Aotus with diarrhoea. The animals were reared in captivity for experimental purposes. Faecal samples were collected using rectal swabs from 78 monkeys of 1 to 7 months old of A. nancymae (n=65) and A. vociferans (n=13) with diarrhoea, and 29 apparently healthy monkeys of 1 month old of A. nancymae (n=21) and A. vociferans (n=8) in the period 2002 to 2005. In the healthy group was most commonly identified E. coli, followed by Proteus vulgaris, P. mirabilis and Citrobacter freundii. A similar result was obtained in the group with diarrhea, plus Klebsiella oxytoca and Enterobacter aerogenes. Serotypes of enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) identified in the group with diarrhea were seven: O158, O142, O86, O125, O126, O55, an...

The use of quinolones for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI) has increased dramatically, a fact that has led to the emergence of resistant strains of pathogen. The aim of the study was to determine the profiles and molecular mechanisms of quinolone-resistant uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains. For this, 3 sensitive strains of E. coli uropathogenic and 58 quinolone-resistant strains were used in the antimicrobial sensitivity with the disk diffusion method for nalidixic acid (W), ciprofloxacin (Cip), levofloxacin (Lvx), norfloxacin (Nfx) and moxifloxacin (Mxf). For molecular tests were used polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction fragments length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequencing of gyr A gene. Excel, Blastn and ClustalX programs were used for data analysis. Uropathogenic E. coli strains showed two major patterns: 25,90% resisted W and 43,10% resisted WCipNorLvxMxf. ...

The aim if this study was to characterize strains of E. coli isolated from Rattus norvegicus belonging to a level 1 animal facility. Faecal samples were taken from 13 rats. Five colonies were randomly selected from the primary growth of the culture of each sampled individual. Biochemical tests were performed and the pathotype and phylogroup were established in the strains that were identified as E. coli by means of the PCR technique. In addition, tests for biofilm formation and antimicrobial susceptibility were performed. Results showed that 65% (26/40) of the isolated strains corresponded to E. coli and all clustered in phylogroup B2. Six of the E. coli strains were resistant to nitrofurantoin (23%), four were resistant to ampicillin (15%), and three strains were resistant to cefozolin (11%). None showed the formation of biofilms, nor the amplification of genes related to any pathotype....

In this study, a glassy borosilicate compound was synthesized using recycled glass and natural clays. Even though glass recycling is the generally accepted standard practice for managing glass waste, fine fractions of container soda-lime glass or cullet of other compositions are still disposed of in landfills. Thus, advanced upcycled products that offer greater economic motivation for implementation in industry may be the key to success, but these are frequently linked to alternative methods of product synthesis. Here, a simple and facile route of borosilicate compound production has been synthesized and characterized. The physicochemical characterization of the compounds was carried out to determine their properties and the antibacterial efficacy of the synthesized compound against Escherichia coli (E. coli) was investigated. The structural and spectroscopic characteristics were identif...
