Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are still major health problems worldwide, affecting especially preschool children and pregnant women. The objectives of this article are: a) To describe the laboratory tests for diagnosing IDA and the factors that may influence results of the serum ferritin and the other iron biomarkers ; b) To present advances in iron metabolism, i.e. the critical regulatory role of hepcidin in the absorption and utilization of iron ; c) To describe the impact this new knowledge has had in the design of clinical investigations comparing the absorption of iron following oral supplementation given in consecutive days vs. alternate days schedules; and, d) To describe the clinical situations in which intravenous iron is indicated as secondary or first-line treatment. Introducción: El presente artículo resume la guía de práctica clínica (GPC) para diagnóstico y tratamiento de hemofilia en el Seguro Social del Perú (EsSalud). Objetivo: Proveer recomendaciones clínicas basadas en evidencia para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de la hemofilia en EsSalud. Material y Métodos: Se conformó un grupo elaborador de la guía (GEG) que incluyó médicos especialistas y metodólogos, el cual formuló preguntas clínicas. Se realizaron búsquedas sistemáticas de revisiones sistemáticas y –cuando fue considerado pertinente– estudios primarios en PubMed durante el 2020 y 2021. Background: This article summarizes the clinical practice guide (CPG) for diagnosis and treatment of hemophilia in the Social Security of Peru (EsSalud). Objective: To provide evidence-based clinical recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of hemophilia in EsSalud. Material and Methods: A guideline development group (GDG) was formed, which included specialist physicians and methodologists, who formulated clinical questions. Systematic searches of systematic reviews were conducted and - when deemed relevant - primary studies in PubMed during 2020 and 2021. Evidence was selected to answer each of the proposed clinical questions. Introduction. Hemophilia is a rare congenital bleeding disorder; which requires interdisciplinary, complex, and often expensive management. The objective of this clinical practice guideline (CPG) is to provide evidence-based clinical recommendations for the evaluation and management of patients with hemophilia in the Peruvian Social Security (EsSalud). Methods. A local elaboration group (GEG-Local) was established, conformed by specialists in hematology and methodologists. The GEG-Local formulated 8 clinical questions to be answered by this CPG. La hemofilia es un trastorno hemorrágico congénito poco común que requiere un manejo interdisciplinario, complejo, y frecuentemente costoso. La presente guía de práctica clínica provee recomendaciones clínicas basadas en evidencia para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de hemofilia en el Seguro Social de Salud del Perú (EsSalud). Se conformó un grupo elaborador local (GEG-Local) integrado por especialistas en hematología y metodólogos. El GEG-Local formuló ocho preguntas clínicas a ser respondidas por la presente guía.
