Larrea divaricata Cav. is widely distributed in Argentina. Aqueous extract, of its leaves, has documented antitumoral and immunomodulatory activities. In this study, the antioxidant activity of aqueous extract and a component, nordihydroguaiaretic acid was determined and compared using different assays. Both the aqueous extract and nordihydroguaiaretic acid exhibited antioxidant activity. However, results show that it is very likely that compounds other than nordihydroguaiaretic acid could be involved in the antioxidant activity of the extract. Since nordihydroguaiaretic acid is nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic agent, it is important to direct efforts toward the potential use of low-nordihydroguaiaretic acid L. divaricata extracts as antioxidant in foods.

Background AKT pathway activation is implicated in endocrine-therapy resistance. Data on the efficacy and safety of the AKT inhibitor capivasertib, as an addition to fulvestrant therapy, in patients with hormone receptor-positive advanced breast cancer are limited. Methods In a phase 3, randomized, double-blind trial, we enrolled eligible pre-, peri-, and postmenopausal women and men with hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative advanced breast cancer who had had a relapse or disease progression during or after treatment with an aromatase inhibitor, with or without previous cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) inhibitor therapy. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive capivasertib plus fulvestrant or placebo plus fulvestrant. The dual primary end point was investigator-assessed progression-free survival assessed both in the overal...

Workshops on clarifying values and transformation of attitudes (CVTA) are useful in eliminating some of the access barriers to quality services for women in situation of abortion, barriers that derive from erroneous information, women and health care providers’ stigmatization, negative attitudes, and obstructionist behavior. Access barriers to safe abortion and post abortion services that follow lawful directions in Latin America are well documented. CVTA is one of various strategies used to assure women accessing services to obtain care quality they deserve. CVTA’s conceptual framework is based on programmed behavior theory and includes some of its elements: values theory and the three main stages of the clarifying values process. In order to be able to participate efficaciously in the clarifying values process with respect to abortion, one should be able to acquire new information,...

Sickle cell disease is define as a group of genetic disorders characterized by the presence of hemoglobin S, anemia, and acute and chronic tissue damage. Sickle cell anemia is the most common type of sickle cell disease, and is caused by the presence of the βs- globin gene in the homozygous state. At present there is no cure for sickle cell anemia except for bone marrow transplantantion, which is available only to a limited number of individuals. The lack of drugs or treatments to cure sickle cell disease is due in part to the absence of good experimental animal models. The recently available sickle cell transgenic mice models should promote the experimentation of new treatments for sickle cell disease. Until a cure is found, the treatment would continue to alleviate the clinical complications associated with the disease. Un update on immunizations, prophylactic penicillin, fo...

This study examined the best-fitting factor structure for the Verbal Aggressiveness Scale (VAS). Infante and Wigley’s scale is often scored as unidimensional. However, factor analytic studies have offered evidence that the scale is multidimensional. This study (N = 185) adopted a crossvalidation approach to factor analysis to ascertain the best-fitting factor structure for the VAS. Half of the data was subjected to exploratory factor analysis and the other half was then validated through confirmatory factor analysis. Results revealed a 15-item, two-factor model, with one factor measuring ego-supportive communication and the other measuring aggression. Theoretical and methodological implications are discussed.

In subduction zones, thermal springs release deeply-sourced volatiles from Earth's mantle, crust, and/or subducted slab-derived material. The origin and apparent ages of these volatiles are important for understanding the deep volatile cycle, which in turn affects the distribution of microbial life in the subsurface. Here, we report carbon (13C, 14C), noble gas (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe), and clumped nitrogen isotope data in gas and water samples from thermal springs within the Central Volcanic Zone (CVZ) of the Andean Convergent Margin (ACM). He isotopes show that CVZ gases are predominantly sourced from the crust (∼77 %), with smaller mantle contributions (∼23 %), consistent with previous studies from the CVZ. Thermal spring samples with non-atmospheric He-Ne characteristics have low 14C activities, and are deeply derived (i.e., from the mantle and crust) and old (>22,000 years). To g...

The advent of immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in modern oncology has significantly improved survival in several cancer settings. A subgroup of women with breast cancer (BC) has immunogenic infiltration of lymphocytes with expression of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). These patients may potentially benefit from ICI targeting the programmed death 1 (PD-1)/PD-L1 signaling axis. The use of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) as predictive and prognostic biomarkers has been under intense examination. Emerging data suggest that TILs are associated with response to both cytotoxic treatments and immunotherapy, particularly for patients with triple-negative BC. In this review from The International Immuno-Oncology Biomarker Working Group, we discuss (a) the biological understanding of TILs, (b) their analytical and clinical validity and efforts toward the clinical utility in BC, and (c) t...
