Aim: To correlate levels of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) evaluated using the International Immuno-Oncology Biomarker Working Group methodology, and both density of tumor-infiltrating immune cell and clinicopathological features in different malignancies. Methods: 209 pathological samples from gastric cancer, cervical cancer (CC), non-small-lung cancer, cutaneous melanoma (CM) and glioblastoma were tested for TIL in hematoxylin eosin, and density of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD20+, CD68+ and CD163+ cells by digital analysis. Results: TIL levels were higher in invasive margin compartments (IMC). TIL in IMC, intratumoral and stromal compartments predicted survival. CC and gastric cancer had higher TIL in intratumoral; CC and CM had higher TIL in stromal compartment and IMC. CM had the highest density of lymphocyte and macrophage populations. CD20 density was associated with survival in the ...

Aim: Helicobacter pylori is usually detected based on hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) features, but, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and real-time PCR (RT-PCR) are more precise in chronic-gastritis. We evaluated the relevance of these tests in Peruvian gastric cancer samples. Materials & methods: We performed and evaluated H-E, IHC staining and RT-PCR in 288 gastric tumors. Slides were independently evaluated by three pathologists. Results: H. pylori was detected in 167/287 through H-E, 140/288 through IHC and 175/288 through RT-PCR, and positive-status were associated (p < 0.001). H. pylori detection by H-E had a good concordance with IHC (kappa index = 0.632) but poor with RT-PCR (kappa index = 0.317). Higher median gene-copies were found in high H. pylori density through H-E or IHC (p < 0.001). Conclusion: H-E evaluation is accurate in gastric cancer, and IHC and RT-PCR can complement its results....

PURPOSE Helicobacter pylori (HP) and Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infections induce chronic gastritis (CG) and are accepted carcinogenics of gastric cancer (GC). Our objective for this study was to determine the prevalence of these agents and clinicopathological features of GC and CG associated with the infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS A single-center cohort of 375 Peruvian patients with GC and 165 control subjects with CG were analyzed. Evaluation of HP and EBV genes was performed through quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Prevalence of HP was 62.9% in the whole population and 60.8% in the GC subset. The cagA gene was detected in 79.9%; vacAs1 and vacAm1 alleles in 41.6% and 60.7%, respectively; and concurrent expression of vacAs1 and vacAm1 in 30.4% of infected patients in the whole series. The prevalence of EBV was 14.1% in the whole population and was higher in GC (P , .001)....

In the investigation carried out in the seed of Lupinus mutabilis Sweet it has been possible to identify by means of a Screening Phitochemistry the present biologically active principIes in the watery extract in boiled, being determined the total alkaloids. The acute toxicity has been evaluated (LD50) so much of the watery extract as of the obtained total alkaloids of the seed.In the watery extract of the seeds the activity antiinflammatory has been evidenced (acute and subchronicle) in experimental models, being administered the Lupinus for oral route to a dose of 2000 mg/Kg of weight. The inflammation was evaluated by different techniques using the technique of Granuloma of Pouche with trementin in rats (Inflammation sub-chronicle) and inflammatory to plant with formol to 1 % and ovoalbúmina to 50% in S.S.I. in mice, following the standard techniques of the CYTED, being obtained the ma...

In the present research, we have evaluated the effect of Lupinus mutabilis Sweet's seed, as watery and methanolic extracts on the gastric mucous of rats, following the Lee's method. Indometacin in doses higher than 50 mg per kg of weight causes lineal lesions, enlarging and dilatation of small intestine; partial obstruction, acute and chronic transmural granulomatous inflamation; abscess in the intestine's crypts and fibrosis. 2000 mg/kg of weight of the watery extract of the Lupinus was administered by mouth and 400 mk/kg of the methanolic extract by the same way.We use four groups of ten male rats each one with 250 g of weight approximately that were previously conditionated in our laboratory supplying food and water ad libitum. The animals were distributed in four groups in aleatory way and they received saline solution, ranitidine, watery extract of Lupinus and methanolic extract of ...

We evaluated the acute oral toxicity and the metabolic effect on glycemia and lipidemia in mice, of the metanolic extract of Notholaena Nivea, "Cuti-Cuti" to 10%, in CYTED models. The effect on plasma glucose was evaluated in normoglycemic and hyperglycemic rats, compared with control groups which received physiological serum. Hyperglycemia was induced with Alloxan, administered by intraperitoneal route to the dose of 150 mg/kg of weight. We used 60 rats distributed in three groups (I, II and III), of 20 rats each one. All the animals were put under 24 hours fasting, previous to the beginning of the experiments. Group I was subdivided in two sub groups of 10 animals each one and received physiological serum or extract of Cuti-Cuti, to observe its effects on normal blood glucose. The second group received alloxan to the dose of 150mg/Kg of weight, by intraperitoneal route, to induce exper...

This research consisted of the evaluation and characterization of wastewater generated during the leather soaking process, both in its conventional method and its enzymatic method. The experiments were conducted at an industrial scale at the Helianthus S.A.C. Company in Lima, using 20 cow hides. Likewise, a treatment process was evaluated for these effluents consisting of protein precipitation and was followed by coagulation. Finally, the dry sludge from each treatment method was evaluated separately for its potential use as fertilizer. The process for the chemical precipitation of proteins consisted of applying KOH until reaching pH values of 10, 11 and 12; while the coagulation process consisted of the application of doses of 600, 800 and 1000 mg/L of aluminum sulphate 17%. When using the conventional soaking process wastewater, the proposed treatment system achieved removal efficienci...

We investigated the effect of two extracts from Peruvian plants given alone or in a mixture on sperm count and glycemia in streptozotocin-diabetic mice. Normal or diabetic mice were divided in groups receiving vehicle, black maca (Lepidium meyenii), yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) or three mixtures of extracts black maca/yacon (90/10, 50/50 and 10/90%). Normal or diabetic mice were treated for 7 d with each extract, mixture or vehicle. Glycemia, daily sperm production (DSP), epididymal and vas deferens sperm counts in mice and polyphenol content, and antioxidant activity in each extract were assessed. Black maca (BM), yacon and the mixture of extracts reduced glucose levels in diabetic mice. Non-diabetic mice treated with BM and yacon showed higher DSP than those treated with vehicle (p < 0.05). Diabetic mice treated with BM, yacon and the mixture maca/yacon increased DSP, and sperm cou...

Wound healing consists of three simultaneous phases: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Previous studies suggest that there is a delay in the healing process in high altitude, mainly due to alterations in the inflammatory phase. Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a Peruvian plant with diverse biological properties, such as the ability to protect the skin from inflammatory lesions caused by ultraviolet radiation, as well as its antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of high altitude on tissue repair and the effect of the topical administration of the spray-dried extract of red maca (RM) in tissue repair. Studies were conducted in male Balb/c mice at sea level and high altitude. Lesions were inflicted through a 10 mm-diameter excisional wound in the skin dorsal surface. Treatments consisted of either (1) spray-dried RM extract or (2...
