Background: Nowadays, the high morbimortality of obesity is mainly related to diabetes, cancer, and hypertension. It is reported that obesity in patients with hypertension can lead to resistance to pressure reduction through pharmacological therapy and lifestyle changes, so bariatric surgery emerges as a proposed treatment for obesity. Methods: We performed an umbrella review that included systematic reviews of clinical trials that evaluated patients with hypertension and non-morbid obesity. The quality and certainty of the evidence was evaluated with the AMSTAR-II and GRADE tools. Results: 677 systematic reviews were identified, of which only three were included for analysis. We considered the outcomes addressed by the reviews on hypertension, identifying that 5 RCTs evaluated pressure reduction at 1 year of follow-up and 5 RCTs at more than 1 year, 5 RCTs evaluated hypertension rate, 6...

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of high altitude exposure time on the oxidation of proteins and lipids from guinea pig brain tissue. Fifty guinea pigs (sea level natives) were taken up to Morococha (4540 m) and sacrificed on days 1, 3, 7 and 14, after arrival. Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity, levels of lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) and malondialdehyde (TBARS) were determined as markers of lipid oxidation. Carbonyl groups (CG) were also determined as markers of protein oxidation. Activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were also determined. PLA2 activity increased until third day. LOOH, TBARS and CG levels were found to be increased the first day; LOOH levels showed a declining trend but TBARS levels remained high, CG concentration decreased below the control group levels on the third day. The activities o...

The objective of this study was to determine the association between serum uric acid (UA) and risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome (MS) in a high altitude population. We included 174 adults, natives from Junin city, 4107 msnm (75 men and 99 women). The prevalence of risk factors like as obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia and low serum level of HDL-cholesterol and uric acid serum level, were estimated. Subjects were stratified by gender into quartiles of serum uric acid levels. A higher prevalence of hyperuricemia in men than in women was found. It is observed that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) increases in both men and women according to quartile of serum uric acid (UA). A significant association between uric acid level and triglyceride level in both men and women was found. It is concluded that the estimated values would show the prevalence...

The aim of this study was to determine serum myeloperoxidase (MPO) level, an enzyme considered as an inflammation indicator, in a high altitude population and in another at sea level, and establish the association of this enzyme with risk factors apt to develop a cardiometabolic disease. Blood samples were collected from 42 subjects in Mala (30 m - Lima) and from 65 people native to Carhuamayo (Junin 4100 m). Weight, height and blood pressure were measured. Hemoglobin (Hb) was determined in whole blood; glucose, total cholesterol, high density lipoproteins, triglycerides and MPO were determined in serum. The results show that with the exception of weight, height and Hb, no significant gender differences between the averages of other variables in both groups were observed. When comparing both populations, highly significant differences in weight (< 0,001), BMI (< 0,001), Hb (< 0,...

The two years of larvae collection in the Marañón and Ucayali rivers were financed by the Concejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONCYTEC) of Peru, who through the Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Científico, Tecnológico y de Innovación Tecnológica (FONDECYT), project 088-2014-FONDECYT-DE. The LMI EDIA and UMR DIADE financed the metabarcoding analyses.
