The objective of this study was to determine the association between serum adiponectin levels and cardiometabolic risk factors in a high altitude population. We included 88 adults (31 men and 57 women), natives from Carhuamayo, town at 4146 m. Anthropometric data were recorded and blood pressure was measured. Serum levels of lipidic profile, glucose and adiponectin were determined. Mean values of serum adiponectin in women were found to be significantly higher than those in men. Estimated hipoadiponectinemia (<4 μg/mL) was 23,9% in the total sample, 45,2% in men and 12,4% in women; the serum adiponectin highest prevalence (47,6%) corresponded to the hipoadiponectinemic group. Serum adiponectin level showed significantly negative correlation with BMI and with serum triglyceride concentration, and was positively and significantly correlated with HDL-cholesterol. Was concluded that hipo...

The objective of this study was to determine the association between serum uric acid (UA) and risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome (MS) in a high altitude population. We included 174 adults, natives from Junin city, 4107 msnm (75 men and 99 women). The prevalence of risk factors like as obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia and low serum level of HDL-cholesterol and uric acid serum level, were estimated. Subjects were stratified by gender into quartiles of serum uric acid levels. A higher prevalence of hyperuricemia in men than in women was found. It is observed that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) increases in both men and women according to quartile of serum uric acid (UA). A significant association between uric acid level and triglyceride level in both men and women was found. It is concluded that the estimated values would show the prevalence...

The aim of this study was to determine serum myeloperoxidase (MPO) level, an enzyme considered as an inflammation indicator, in a high altitude population and in another at sea level, and establish the association of this enzyme with risk factors apt to develop a cardiometabolic disease. Blood samples were collected from 42 subjects in Mala (30 m - Lima) and from 65 people native to Carhuamayo (Junin 4100 m). Weight, height and blood pressure were measured. Hemoglobin (Hb) was determined in whole blood; glucose, total cholesterol, high density lipoproteins, triglycerides and MPO were determined in serum. The results show that with the exception of weight, height and Hb, no significant gender differences between the averages of other variables in both groups were observed. When comparing both populations, highly significant differences in weight (< 0,001), BMI (< 0,001), Hb (< 0,...
