Introduction: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory neuropathy that can cause respiratory paralysis and require mechanical ventilation. Diaphragmatic ultrasound is useful for assessing respiratory function in these patients and guiding ventilator weaning. Case report: We present the case of a 16-year-old adolescent with GBS and progressive respiratory failure, admitted to the Intensive Care Unit on mechanical ventilation and vasoactive support. Chest CT revealed left atelectasis, confirmed by fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Subsequently, diaphragmatic ultrasound showed excursion less than 10 mm, indicating muscle dysfunction. A tracheostomy and respiratory rehabilitation were initiated, with progressive clinical and functional improvement. Conclusion: Diaphragmatic ultrasound allowed for early identification of diaphragmatic dysfunction, facilitating key therapeutic decisions ...

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between intolerance to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), bronchial asthma, and nasal polyps, and to develop an effective treatment strategy for patients suffering from these conditions simultaneously. Material and Methods: The study was conducted across several clinical centres and included 200 patients diagnosed with bronchial asthma and nasal polyps, as well as intolerance to NSAIDs. Data were collected on the clinical manifestations of the pathology, including disease symptoms, frequency, and severity of exacerbations, along with their allergic history and tolerance to various drugs. Additionally, laboratory tests were performed, including blood tests to determine eosinophil levels, immunoglobulin E, and other inflammatory markers. Results: Based on the collected data, individualized treatment regimen...

ABSTRACT Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) carries high mortality during its early course, yet few studies compare outcomes between critically ill and non-critical patients. Materials and Methods: Multicenter study including 5,060 hospitalized adults with AKI. Early mortality was defined as death within the first 14 days. Clinical characteristics were compared between patients admitted and not admitted to the ICU using standard statistical tests and Cox regression models. Results: ICU patients showed greater hemodynamic and metabolic compromise, with higher mortality (24.4% vs. 6.2%). In adjusted models, age, sodium, and potassium were associated with increased risk of early mortality, whereas bicarbonate and chloride showed inverse associations. Oxygen saturation and respiratory rate were also linked to poorer outcomes. Conclusions: Early mortality in AKI is influenced by electrol...

Toxocariasis, a zoonotic parasitic infection primarily caused by Toxocara canis and T. cati, remains a neglected yet widespread public health issue in Latin America. This comprehensive review explores its biological, clinical, epidemiological, and socio-economic dimensions, emphasizing the disease’s underrecognition in endemic areas. Transmission occurs through accidental ingestion of embryonated eggs from contaminated environments, particularly affecting children in low-income settings. In humans, larvae migrate aberrantly, causing visceral, ocular, and neurological syndromes with substantial morbidity. The burden is compounded by limited diagnostic infrastructure, inconsistent access to antiparasitic therapy, and inadequate veterinary and environmental controls. High seroprevalence and environmental contamination rates are reported across Latin America, yet toxocariasis is absent fro...

The recent suspension of U.S. government support for various health and development programs in Latin America highlights the risks of dependence on foreign cooperation. This decision compromises Peru's progress in public health, particularly in strategic areas such as HIV prevention, tuberculosis control, and the elimination of communicable diseases. Despite the historical dependence on international cooperation, USAID reports have highlighted the potential for self-sustainability of the programs implemented in Peru. However, the suspension of foreign support significantly impacts on the development of activities that favor health care coverage, continuity of services, and research capacity in public health. These effects could be sustained in the long term, with consequences that are difficult to reverse if compensation measures or national strengthening strategies are not adopted.

Introduction: Previous studies have associated exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with higher rates of tuberculosis (TB), especially among men. Likewise, a causal relationship between TB and lung cancer (LC) has been demonstrated. On the other hand, residential radon gas (²²²Rn) is a well-known carcinogen and the leading cause of LC among non-smokers. Objective: To evaluate the ecological association between PM2.5 and/or ²²²Rn levels and tuberculosis (TB) and lung cancer (LC) rates in adults over 60 years of age of both sexes, in the 43 districts of Metropolitan Lima, during the period 2019–2022. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study using secondary data analysis. TB and LC data were obtained from the Ministry of Health, PM2.5 estimates were derived using the WRF-Chem model, and ²²²Rn concentrations were measured with G2 diffusion chambers. F...

Subjective benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (sBPPV) is a clinical variant of BPPV in which patients present with typical vestibular symptoms but without evidence of nystagmus during the Dix-Hallpike maneuver. Subjective benign paroxysmal positional vertigo accounts for approximately 20% of all BPPV cases and is frequently underdiagnosed in primary care settings. Our findings indicate that the Epley maneuver is equally effective in patients with subjective and objective BPPV, enabling timely intervention without the need for instrumental diagnostic methods. Objective: To evaluate the short-term effectiveness of the Epley maneuver in patients with sBPPV treated at Centro Médico ISSEMyM Toluca, as well as to analyze potential correlations with age, gender, and comorbidities. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in 49 patients diagnosed with sBPPV. The effectiveness of th...

Digital literacy represents a key challenge in closing the gaps in access to and use of technologies among Amazonian Indigenous, Andean, and Afro-Peruvian populations in Peru. This article analyzes the evolution of access to and use of digital technologies within these groups using data from the National Household Survey (ENAHO) between 2019 and 2024. Significant progress is evident, such as the increase in internet use and the expansion of mobile telephony; however, challenges to digital inclusion persist, linked to geographic, socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic factors. The main initiatives implemented by the Peruvian State to promote more equitable access to information and public services are also reviewed. Finally, the findings reveal that populations whose mother tongue is Amazonian exhibit the lowest levels of digital connectivity, with internet access 35–40% lower than And...
