Seismic demands obtained from nonlinear static analysis play an important role in performance-based design or evaluation. It has been proved that the invariant patterns of load distribution most used in this kind of analysis are not always appropriate to represent the seismic action in structures when getting into the inelastic range. This study aims to compare the structural demands obtained from nonlinear static analysis using different basic patterns of load distribution with those obtained from the rigorous nonlinear time-history analyzes, which are considered as the benchmark. Four seismic intensities were considered, as well as two structure heights. The maximum average displacement of the top of the last level obtained from the different non-linear time-history analyzes was adopted as the objective displacement in the pushover analyzes with each pattern. The results show the lack ...

In this investigation, the elasto-plastic behavior and the seismic performance of concrete reinforced frame structures reinforced are evaluated by applying the Pushover method. This evaluation is done on several cases: with high ductility steel (Grade 40), conventional steel (Grade 60) and high strength steel (Grade 75). For the previous, the capacity curve graph obtained from the displacement coefficient method was used to measure the capacity of the structure. In addition, the performance of the structure for different levels of seismic design are evaluated with the resulting values of ductility and rigidity of each case. The results showed that reinforcing a structure with a Grade 40 reinforcing steel increases the energy dissipation capacity, and if reinforced with a Grade 75 reinforcing steel increases the strength capacity in the structure. Finally, the comparative result of the va...

The hip femoral stem is vital in ensuring patient support and mobility, and research into the femoral stem is critical for improving the durability and strength of orthopedic prostheses. Using the finite element method, this paper evaluates a femoral stem’s static, transient, and fatigue behaviors using three different materials: Ti-6Al-4V, CoCr alloy, and AISI 316L. ANSYS Mechanical software was used to perform the static analysis, evaluate deformations and stresses, and perform the transient analysis to simulate dynamic loading conditions. In addi-tion, a fatigue analysis was conducted to determine the resistance to repetitive load cycles. The results showed that the stresses and strains in the transient analysis were higher than in the static analysis because the transient analysis considers dynamic and time-varying loads. In addition, the Ti-6Al-4V material exhibits higher fatigue ...

The numerical solution of the one-dimensional non-static diffusion equation is proposed, developing an algorithm in software Matlab version 7.0, for which the mimetic finite difference scheme is combined in the approximation of the differential operators of the continuum (gradient and divergence) for the spatialvariable, on a uniform grid, whose discrete differential operators have a second order approximation and the finite difference approach type Crank Nicolson for approximations in the temporary variable. This proposed algorithm for the mimetic and Crank Nicolson approaches has a better approximation than the finite-difference Crank Nicolson-type scheme. In addition, the approximation error generated between the numerical solution and the analytical solution is calculated using the maximum standard for the non-stationary diffusion equation with Robin type boundary conditions.

Crossed spherical gearing is used in the joints of robotic arm prostheses and allows mobility in 3 degrees of freedom. This paper aims to evaluate the design of a cross-spherical gear with three different materials, PEEK, AISI 304L, and Ti-6Al-4V, for a robotic arm prosthesis by finite element analysis. ANSYS mechanical software (version 2021 R1) was used to perform the static analysis and evaluate the deformations and stresses, modal analysis of natural frequencies and vibration modes, and high cycle fatigue analysis to determine fatigue resistance. The results obtained in the static analysis show that the maximum stresses are in the same zones for the three materials and have similar values. However, the Ti-6Al-4V and ASI 304L materials have a higher safety factor than PEEK, with a value of 5.17. In conclusion, the crossed spherical gearing is numerically validated using the finite ele...

The reproductive activity of various species of mammals is influenced by the sperm subpopulations of their ejaculates. These subpopulations differ in the motility and kinetic characteristics of the sperm and have been related and classified according to their capacity for the fertilization process. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the composition of the semen diluent on the sperm subpopulations of the chilled rabbit semen. The semen of 10 rabbits of the Californian breed (three ejaculated per animal) was obtained. Each ejaculate was divided into four aliquots, which were diluted in one of four diluents, whose basic composition consisted of T1: skim milk and sugars; T2: dextrose, sodium citrate and potassium acetate; T3: sodium caseinates, phosphates and sugars; and T4: tris-citric acid and egg yolk. Each aliquot was kept refrigerated at 16 °C for 72 h. I...

For an implant-supported restoration of the maxillary anterior area; the buccal bone plate should have a minimum thickness to ensure an optimal and predictable behavior of soft tissue. Objective: To evaluate the mechanical behavior of stress and microstrain (von Mises yield criterion); in different thicknesses of buccal maxillary bone plates. Methods: The finite element method was used for modeling the maxillary anterior area with three different buccal bone thickness 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mm. An implant-supported restoration was modeled as well, to which a static load of 200 N was applied. Stress and microstrains were obtained in the buccal bone plates at 2, 4 and 6 mm from the alveolar crest towards the apical direction, both in cancellous and cortical bone. Results: Based on the finite element method, it was found that in the thickness of 0.5 mm of buccal bone plate (cortical) with 2 mms hei...

Objective: To review the historical and current periodontal phenotype classifications evaluating methods and characteristics. Moreover, to identify and classify the methods based on periodontal phenotype components. Overview: Several gingival morphology studies have been frequently associated with different terms used causing confusion among the readers. In 2017, the World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions recommended to adopt the term “periodontal phenotype”. This term comprises two terms, gingival phenotype (gingival thickness and keratinized tissue width) and bone morphotype (buccal bone plate thickness). Furthermore, gingival morphology has been categorized on “thin-scalloped”, “thick-scalloped” and “thick-flat” considering the periodontal biotype. However, by definition, the term phenotype is preferred over biotype...

This study investigates market dynamics using a discrete economic model of supply and demand. Initially, the linear case with naïve or static expectations is analyzed, and the stability conditions that lead to different system behaviors, such as convergence to equilibrium, periodic oscillations, or divergence, are determined analytically through the study of fixed points and cobweb dynamics. Subsequently, the analysis is extended to the nonlinear case with adaptive expectations, where the interaction between supply nonlinearity and the expectation formation process is found to generate complex behaviors. The results show how variations in the nonlinearity parameter induce bifurcations observable in time series. The study provides a comprehensive analytical framework that links mathematical properties with observable economic phenomena, offering tools to predict and manage stability in r...

The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of the disinfection of irrigation water loaded with the plant-parasitic nematode Meloidogyne incognita using a solar photoreactor. The photoreactor was comprised of a compound parabolic concentrator and a disinfection chamber made of boro-silicate glass where a static mixer coated or uncoated with TiO2 was installed. Water loaded with M. incognita was exposed to solar radiation within the reactor and recirculated while accumulated ultraviolet (UV) energy was registered. It was determined that an accumulated UV solar energy of 72 kJ/L inhibited the motility of juveniles while accumulated energy of 215 kJ/L was necessary to inhibit the egg hatching. Plants of lettuce irrigated with the treated water showed significantly less nodulation, higher air-dry weight and root dry-weight compared with the control group. No significant difference...

Object recognition in videos is one of the main challenges in computer vision. Several methods have been proposed to achieve this task, such as background subtraction, temporal differencing, optical flow, particle filtering among others. Since the introduction of Convolutonal Neural Networks (CNN) for object detection in the Imagenet Large Scale Visual Recognition Competition (ILSVRC), its use for image detection and classification has increased, becoming the state-of-the-art for such task, being Faster R-CNN the preferred model in the latest ILSVRC challenges. Moreover, the Faster R-CNN model, with minimum modifications, has been succesfully used to detect and classify objects (either static or dynamic) in video sequences; in such setup, the frames of the video are input “as is” i.e. without any pre-processing. In this thesis work we propose to use Robust PCA (RPCA, a.k.a. Principal...

This paper presents an analytical solution for static analysis of thick rectangular beams with different boundary conditions. Carrera's Unified Formulation (CUF) is used in order to consider shear deformation theories of arbitrary order. The novelty of the present work is that a boundary discontinuous Fourier approach is used to consider clamped boundary conditions in the analytical solution, unlike Navier-type solutions which are restricted to simply supported beams. Governing equations are obtained by employing the principle of virtual work. The numerical accuracy of results is ascertained by studying the convergence of the solution and comparing the results to those of a 3D finite element solution. Beams subjected to bending due to a uniform pressure load and subjected to torsion due to opposite linear forces are considered. Overall, accurate results close to those of 3D finite elemen...

This paper presents a static analysis of laminated composite doubly-curved shells using refined kinematic models with polynomial and non-polynomial functions recently introduced in the literature. To be specific, Maclaurin, trigonometric, exponential and zig-zag functions are employed. The employed refined models are based on the equivalent single layer theories. A simply supported shell is subjected to different mechanical loads, specifically: bi-sinusoidal, uniform, patch, hydrostatic pressure and point load. The governing equations are derived from the Principle of Virtual displacement and solved via Navier-Type closed form solutions. The results are compared with results from Layer-wise solutions and different higher order shear deformation theories available. It is shown that refined models with non-polynomial terms are able to accurately predict the through-the-thickness displaceme...
