Lead, a metal that has been extensively used since antiquity, can be found in the majority of persons. This metal affects systems, organs, and tissues. The thresholds for its toxic effects vary from individual to individual. Probably because they are in the process of development and due to cer tain physiological, pathological y behavioral characteristics children usually absorb a greater proportion of lead with more severe outcomes than adults. Public health services can identify areas where people has a higher risk for lead intoxication and establish requirements for screening, early diagnosis and adequate treatment. The determination of lead in venous blood is the most sensitive test for the evaluation of lead exposure. Experts recommend maintaining a level below 10 μg/dL. This article reviews origin, effects, diagnosis and treatment of lead intoxication.

Lead is a toxic substance that can be present in toys through their decorative painting and that, when absorbed orally by children, can lead to chronic intoxication through bioaccumulation. As a result, in Peru, Maximum Permissible Limits (MPL) of 90 ppm or mg/kg have been established according to D.S. No. 008-2007-SA. Thus, the objective of the present investigation was to determine the concentration of lead in educational toys (puzzles) to determine if they are within the Maximum Permissible Limits (MPL) and its relationship with the places of sale, country of origin and if it has sanitary authorization. Samples were analysed by the ICP-OES method. The 92,85% of toys had lead concentrations above 90 ppm/Pb. The values had a maximum of 3712,5 90 ppm/Pb and a minimum of 60 ppm. Their ease of collection and high reuse rates represent a sustainable alternative, only if they are carried out in a proper way. If an environmental framework is not established to ensure adequate preservation of natural resources and protection of human health, their use would not be sustainable. RESUMO OBJETIVO: Estudar a relação entre níveis séricos de chumbo e funções cognitivas em crianças expostas a esse metal. MÉTODO: Este é um estudo transversal que incluiu 134 crianças de 6 a 8,5 anos de idade, de três escolas localizadas em El Callao (Peru), e com riscos diferentes de exposição ao chumbo. As avaliações de suas funções cognitivas foram realizadas utilizando-se o Teste Gráfico de Raciocínio e o Teste dos Cubos de Kohs.
