This article provides evidence of the impact of the Qali Warma school feeding program on anemia and chronic malnutrition in children between 3 and 5 years of age in Peru. Drawing on data from the 2014 to 2017 Peruvian Demographic and Health Survey, we obtain empirical results through a quantitative two-step evaluation. First, we use entropy balancing and machine learning techniques to achieve a comparable control group that allows for robust estimates. Then, employing regressions, we estimate the program’s effect on the variables of interest. The results indicate that Qali Warma has no effect on anemia nor on chronic malnutrition in the age range studied.

Current government policies bring about new perspectives for improvements in the nutritional aspect. However, since mid 2005, the Peruvian government has implemented a wheat flour fortification program with micronutrients. Act # 28314 approved a modification to the mandatory fortification of wheat flour with iron, increasing the amount of iron from 30 mg/kg of wheat flour to 55 mg of ferrous sulphate, in addition to 1-2 mg/kg folic acid, among other micronutrients. This article reviews aspects related to iron and folic acid, as well as information on iron and folic acid defficiencies, such as anemia and neural tube defects. Finally, recommendations are provided based on the information presented to promote the use of food fortified with wheat flour.

Objective. To determine the relationship between the Articulated Nutritional Program (PAN, by its Spanish acronym) and chronic malnutrition in children under 5 years old in the Panao Health Micro Network, Pachitea Province, Huánuco Region (Peru), for the period 2018-2021. Methods: A correlational study with a non-experimental design was conducted. Secondary data from DIRESA-Huánuco and the Friendly Consultation web portal of the Ministry of Economy and Finance were used to estimate Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: A negative relationship was found between PAN and chronic child malnutrition in the Panao district, with a Pearson correlation coefficient value of -0.74. Additionally, a negative relationship was found between chronic child malnutrition and the dimensions of PAN: management of PAN goods and services (-0.47), budget allocation (-0.66), and PAN budget execution (-0....

Fetal life is characterized by the ability to respond to environmental factors. Nutrition is the most important environmental factor influencing development processes by regulating epigenetic mechanisms. Identifying the role of dietary factors that modulate and remodel the fetal epigenome during development, including the methyl-group donors, is of great importance. Epigenetics studies inherited changes in gene expression not related to modifications in the DNA sequence. Folate metabolism regulates the supply of methyl groups; therefore, eating disorders may influence regulation of epigenetic mechanisms. The crucial role of folate in cell division and homocysteine conversion has been conclusively demonstrated. Because epigenetic processes are one of the pathways in fetal programming, abnormal folate delivery may lead to fetal abnormalities and risk of chronic diseases in adulthood. The o...

The objective of this research was to determine the impact of an intervention program at community level in the reduction of anemia and child malnutrition. Applied research of quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest of a single group. The sample size was 300 children under 5 years old selected through a probabilistic sampling in 4 population centers of the district of Barranca: Santa. Elena, Pampa San Alejo, Vinto and Araya. Data were obtained through the anthropometric assessment and hemoglobin examination with the portable hemoglobinometer, then a home intervention program was applied to children and parents and included educational talks and demonstration sessions related to anemia and malnutrition. Likewise, educational programs were developed to the community with massive campaigns that included playful games and group workshops to reinforce the knowledge provided at hom...
