Presidential elections are a space of broad public debate, a vent of ideological passions, confrontation of ideas, among other aspects that we can find thanks to the press diffusing role, responsible for describing occurred events. It is important to point out that newspapers played a central role, especially during pre-electoral contexts or in actual elections, either to forge the image for or against a candidate. On this matter, information contrast from various newspapers and even the memories of prefects, witnesses of the time among other sources, allowed us to approach reality objectively and thus demystify the so-called Aristocratic Republic (1899-1919) labeled by some historians as a space of social and political stability. On the contrary, what is exposed in the press shows us a time of great tension and confrontation at the dawn of the 20th century. An example is 1899 presidenti...

This article studies the role of the sensationalist popular press during the campaign for the second electoral round carried out in Peru between April and June 2021. For this, the journalistic discourse on the front pages of the newspapers Trome and Ojo is analyzed, which are the two popular newspapers of the largest media conglomerate in the country, the El Comercio Group. The study identifies in the discourse on the covers of Trome and Ojo—whose agendas are traditionally devoted to police news, entertainment and sports—the presence of what Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman (1988/1995) call anti-communist ideology. Through it, they sought to associate candidate Pedro Castillo with “communism” or “chavismo”, and present him as the worst of evils. The discourse of these popular newspapers was oriented to associate their idea of communism with terrorism, violence and hatre...

This paper falls within the historical studies on exile in Latin America. It is proposed that, the Chileans exiled during Manuel Montt’s government (1851-1861) who lived in the city of Lima, used the press as a tool, to build a historical account that sought to provide them of a common identity with a double purpose. First, as a way of presentation and defense against the Peruvian public opinion, in a context in which their presence as a group was openly criticized. On the other hand, nineteenth-century press circulation through communication lines also allowed the construction of a narrative by the exiles against the Chilean government.  An ideological conflict that opposed liberal and conservatives positions after the influence of the European revolutions of 1848.

This article shows the results of an academic research on the way in which the Peruvian press addresses the issue of abortion. A content analysis has been carried out to detect the frames, themes and journalistic sources present in 160 texts published during the five-year period 2015-2019 by the newspapers El Comercio, Perú 21, La República, La Hora, Correo and El Tiempo. The first three are part of the most read press in the metropolitan Lima region, while the last three are among the most read newspapers in the Piura region. These two regions are the most populated in the Andean country. One of the variables of the content analysis are the generic frames used by the press: pro-life, pro-abortion and neutral/ambiguous. The results show that five of the six selected newspapers –all except El Comercio– used mostly pro-life frames, that is, opposed to induced abortion. On the other h...

The Underground Press Syndicate (UPS), later known as Alternative Press Syndicate (APS), was a chain of countercultural newspapers and magazines created in the middle of 1966 by publishers of five early underground newspapers «The East Village Other», «The Los Angeles Free Press», «The Berkeley Barb», «The Paper» and «Fifth Estate». By 1974 the majority of underground papers in the USA ceased to exist but  they had an impact on journalistic processes during 1970-s that led to the press development in small towns and countryside giving alternative opinion about local news, cultural news, Native Americans’ politics, ecology, youth and anti-military movements. The article considers the history of “underground press” in the USA, its role and importance for Countercultural Revolution of the 1960-s, which was countrywide in the USA and covered all areas of life.

In the nineties, popular press (also called prensa chicha) became in Peru an important presence in the communication sphere. During this period, this presence was linked to relations of clientelism and subordination formed with Fujimori’s government. Nevertheless, this presence remains important after all these years, even after many changes in government. Our research looks to describe from a semiotic perspective those enunciative characteristics forged and consolidated during that period. Our research aims to outline a description of enunciative strategies more than a content analysis, in order to establish the configuration of the reading contract in this press. We have followed a semiotic approach of enunciation understanding it as a representation: a represented enunciation. Through the analysis of the most read journals in this period (Ojo, Extra, and Ajá), we have established t...

The increased cultural activity in Peru within the last years requires a media complement that contributes to advance in this sector and educate the public. In addition: culture, education and economy are key factors for social development and media must assume their responsibility by not just emitting informative messages, but also instructive, critic and orientated ones. According to academic and operatic music specialists and professionals, cultural journalism in Peru is not fully developed: in many situations great importance events are omitted and in others only trivial aspects are published. In that sense, to address such issues information professionals require a constant preparation and a high sense of ethics so they build a solid section with useful information for the public.

The earthquake of March 4th, 1904, as a natural phenomenon, evidenced the vulnerability in the construction materials of the buildings in Lima. This type of study brings us closer to those of historical seismology as long as its relationship as a natural phenomenon with society is analyzed in a diachronic way. Thus, it is also important to point out that studies of natural disasters have as their main purpose the implementation of measures that contribute to reduce the vulnerability of the populations that are frequently affected by them, so as to prevent the effects. For this study, newspaper articles describing the phenomenon and its effects were used as the main sources. Despite the fact that this phenomenon did not generate a disaster with a high number of victims and losses, the authorities and the population did not take the necessary measures to modify the construction patterns, c...

This article offers a journey through various texts –from the last fifty years of research– about the role and development of Peruvian soccer and its links with communication studies. The aim is to ponder the role played by sports media in the construction of Peruvian social reality, specifically in the case of football historiography in that country. Through a detailed review of three communication sources (written press, radio and television), we see a marked tendency from the Peruvian academy for the investigation of football and communications, taking as a source the written press and television, omitting the radio. Future research should also focus on visual aspects, new technologies and audiences.

During the last decade of the XVIII century, four periodic publications came together in the Peruvian capital: the Diario de Lima, the Mercurio Peruano, the Semanario Crítico and the Gaceta de Lima. Of these, has been the Mercurio Peruano, spokesman of the Academic Society of country lovers, the most representative newspaper of dimensions that was reaching the spirit of Enlightenment in our country, turning into the channeler source, par excellence, of first effects of national and modernist identity constitution, managed for Peru.

Cultural Journalism is one of the most important fields of information in social life. Since its inception, it has been linked to the written press and to the world of sciences, arts and letters, and today, it has become a wide space of varied topics, which includes not only the most relevant events of the cultural world, but also those of entertainment and media show. Given this scenario, this research seeks to demonstrate, through a content analysis of three of the most important national newspapers in the peruvian written press (El Comercio, La República, Perú21) that cultural contents have been replaced by questions of “farandula”, gossip and mediatic facts, contributing to an increasingly negative meaning of entertainment journalism and the trivialization of true Cultural Journalism.
