We studied the oviposition preference, food plants, life cycle of Morpho menelaus occidentalis, and its natural enemies. Three butterfly gardens were constructed with host plants representative of the forest, previously confirmed as suitable for the species. Wild females were collected and introduced into the enclosures, where they were fed fermented ripe bananas. In these environments, oviposition by host species, the number of larvae, and the presence of natural enemies were recorded. In the natural forest, the plants consumed by adults were documented. The life cycle was evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions (24–30 °C, 86% relative humidity, and a photoperiod of 14L:10O) using 20 newly emerged larvae fed with Arachis pintoi. Growth, molting, and morphometry of each stage were recorded daily, and a Kaplan–Meier curve was constructed to estimate survival. Adults’ laid ...

We report the presence of the Rufous Collared Sparrow Zonotrichia capensis for the first time in the departments of Loreto and San Martín at 155 and 240 m altitude respectively, which corresponds to the first confirmed record of the species for the Peruvian Amazon. It is possible that the presence of the species is due to the existence of the Tarapoto - Yurimaguas road, which would facilitate the occupation of the species by landscape transformation.

The consumption of insects is a widespread practice among indigenous or native peoples of the Amazon. To assess the knowledge of the diversity of resources for entomophagy from the perspective of these peoples, testimonies or references about knowledge and feeding traditions of 100 people were collected in 37 localities in seven provinces of the department of San Martín in the basin of the Huallaga River. One cumulative species curve and the probability function of new species were estimated, then the probability of not finding a new species (99.5 %) to n100 was determined. The specimens that were captured in the field (54 %) were compared with representative specimens and databases, and the information provided by the participants was analysed to approximate the preliminary taxonomic locations of the remaining part of the sample. We found 46 resources for entomophagy and reported for f...

Chirikyacu, Chunchiwi, and Chirik Sacha, located in the San Martin region (Peru), are indigenous communities affiliated with the National Program of Forest Conservation for Climate Change Mitigation. The three communities approved the implementation of the Conditional Direct Transfer Mechanism (TDC, acronym in Spanish) as a financial tool for primary forest conservation. This research characterizes the participation of the beneficiaries from the type of involvement and participation size along the TDC execution, identifying drivers that facilitate and limit the participation of the beneficiaries’ minority.Minorities, as in any society, have access to fewer opportunities. In the three communities, I found larger minority groups (such as women) than others with less population (such as monolingual), as well as gender norms accepted in the communities, which limit the minority groups from...

In this study, we report the parasitism by sparganum of tapeworm Spirometra sp. in amphibians: Pristimantis nephophilus and Pristimantis rhodostichus, from the department of San Martin, Peru. We collected three filiform structures located at the subcutaneous and identified as sparganum. The finding of this metacestode is the first record in amphibians of Peru, and shows that frogs P. nephophilus and P. rhodostichus are new intermediate hosts for Spirometra sp.

The study analyzes the conservation value of forests assigned to indigenous populations of the Peruvian Amazon: San Jacinto and Puerto Arturo in Madre de Dios, communities with different realities in terms of conservation and forest management. Two scenarios prevail here: The San Jacinto indigenous community with 7 033,98 ha of forest, is characterized by disorder and the development of activities that put the community at risk (gold mining), while Puerto Arturo with 3 731 ha is a community committed to the management and conservation of its resources. By means of the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) through the dichotomous logit model we try to define the willingness of the individuals to accept compensation (WAC) on proposed prices of a hypothetical scenario. The results show that the average annual WAC to implement the environmental program was S/ 20,46 (USD 6,30) and S/ 14,84 (USD 4...

The specific diversity of the Loricariidae family (Siluriformes, Pisces) was estimated in the 10 provinces of the San Martín region (Peruvian Amazon). For molecular characterization, the nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit I (COI) were obtained. The phylogenetic analysis of the sequences confirmed the presence of 16 species, distributed in nine genera. The values of observed wealth and expected wealth show the province of Picota as the richest (seven species), unlike the province of Rioja that presented the lowest observed wealth (one species), followed by the province of El Dorado (two species). The principal component analysis (PCA) allowed us to observe the importance of the species Chaetostoma sp. 1 in the province of Rioja, as well as in Ancistrus sp. 2 for the province of San Martin. In addition, our results show that the most abundant...

Understanding and managing Water Ecosystem Services (WES) are fundamental to the sustainability of ecosystem-rich regions. To understand the relationship between water ecosystem services and the challenges of implementing conservation projects in drinking water management in San Martín, in the Peruvian Amazon, a survey was conducted with 52 key stakeholders in the drinking water sector, ranging from those responsible for Municipal Technical Areas to those working in supplier companies. Structured questionnaires were designed, reviewed, and validated, ensuring that the questions were clear and useful. Data analysis employed statistical methods such as Gamma association and Somers' D test, which helped identify important connections related to more responsible and sustainable water management. The results show a strong correlation between water ecosystem services and bottlenecks, with leg...

The emergence of “shamanic tourism” in some Shipibo-Konibo villages and urban areas has led to a recrudescence of vernacular witchcraft practices, now integrated into the new sociological context of the commercialization of local vegetalist shamanism. This has brought about sorcery attacks both on rival shamans and on tourists seeking a shamanic and hallucinogenic experience, some of whom in turn become the target of sorcery rumors. These occult practices and interpretations can be seen, on the one hand, as forms of resilience adopted by Shipibo shamans in order to cope with and benefit from the current context of transition to capitalism, which is increasingly present within the communities, and, on the other hand, as manifestations of frustration and anxiety about the recuperation of local shamanism by global culture, symptomatic of the traditionally ambiguous links between gringos...

Social entrepreneurship is a concept often associated with ventures to develop products or services for national or international markets and the social benefits they generate. However, little is known about the impact of social entrepreneurship on indigenous communities such as those found in the Peruvian Amazon. This paper examines social value creation following the implementation of an educational process based on the development of entrepreneurship skills in leaders of multiethnic communities in Loreto, Peru. A quasi-experimental design was used to establish a comparison between an experimental group and a control group. It was found that the leaders of the intervention group outperformed the control group in terms of the promotion of collective learning, a higher level of association and a greater capacity to interact with institutions that support community development.

The territories of what is now Latin America and the Caribbean went through violent colonisation processes, which installed power structures at the political, economic, social and cultural levels, all and generated deeply asymmetrical relationships. Years later, with processes of independence, abolitionist and the formation of nation-states, instead of eliminating these power structures, they were camouflaged and transformed into strategies, discourses and practices that have continued to reproduce the colonial logic. The aim of this essay is to analyse how coloniality continues to exist through extractivism and how, in the face of its impacts, indigenous peoples carry out processes of resistance in defence of territory and life. Methodologically, a bibliographical and documentary analysis of the theoretical and conceptual proposals on coloniality and extractivism from Latin American and...
