This paper proposes the evaluation of the feasibility of a bioengineering geotechnical solution for the control of natural slope landslides caused by soil susceptibility, because of natural events or human action. The engineering solution with environmental considerations involves using the vetiver plant (Chrysopogon zizanioides) to stabilize the natural slope. The methodology applied was the identification of soil characteristics through soil mechanics laboratory tests, knowledge of vetiver grass and slope stability analysis considering the experimental method (EM) and mathematical model (MM). The shear strength parameters obtained in the experimental method consider the cohesion and friction angle resulting from the direct shear test, while the second method only considers the additional cohesion resulting from the mechanical effect provided by the vetiver roots. The results of the res...

In a public hospital in Peru, users must go to the hospital pharmacy service to obtain prescribed medications, but it has been identified that only 47.9% of prescriptions are filled completely, which prevents the delivery of all the medications needed to comply with the treatment indicated by the treating physician. This reveals a low level of service in the hospital pharmacy, according to the evaluation carried out during the period from January to December 2022. The causes of the problem include the inappropriate prescription of medicines, in the sense that sometimes the treating physician prescribes medicines that are not included in the Drug Formulary approved by the Ministry of Health, which means that the patient sometimes has to purchase the medicines in private pharmacies. In addition, another cause is the lack of training of warehouse personnel. In this sense, the patient care m...

A finite element method (FEM) based tool is used in this work to numerically modeling mineral-slurry like flows in a 3D lid-driven cavity. Accordingly, the context in which the referred FEM based tool is being developed is firstly emphasized. Both mathematical and numerical models utilized here are described next. A special emphasis is put on the flow governing equations and the particular FEM weighted residuals approach (Galerkin method) used to solve these equations. Since mineral-slurry flows both featuring relatively low flow velocities and containing large amounts of solid particles can be accounted for as laminar non-Newtonian flows, only laminar flows are discussed here. Indeed both Newtonian and non-Newtonian laminar flows are numerically studied using a 3D lid-driven cavity at two different Reynolds numbers. Two rheological models, power-law and Carreau-Yasuda, are utilized in t...

The performance of discrete element method (DEM) simulations is highly dependent on the requirements of the associated algorithms in terms of computer memory usage and CPU time. In particular, computer CPU time heavily depends on the identification of neighbor particles and the computation of particle-particle interactions. Over the years several neighbor particles searching methods have been developed. Accordingly, in this work the performance of two of well-known searching methods, linked cell and Verlet tables algorithms, are assessed in the context of the development of a new DEM-based tool. More specifically, the neighbor searching methods performance and related computational costs are parametrically analyzed and an assessment of their suitability for carrying the intended numerical simulations is provided. The referred numerical simulations are performed accounting for a canonical...

The importance of the rhythm method for us is because it is the only contraceptive method that the Catholic Church can be used for family planning. In March 1964, the present Pope Paul VI promised that the Church re-examine in depth the regulation of births. Studies of the theoretical effectiveness of the rhythm method with a statistical model show that the risk of conception per menstrual cycle decreases proportionally to the increase in the number of days of abstinence and increases in proportion to the contribution of the pre-ovulatory phase of the variation of the menstrual cycles. Therefore, as the Ogino formula requires three days of abstinence, it marks a period of eight days fertility theoretically offers greater protection estimated at 90% for 5-10 years. The mathematical probabilities for spacing births to 18 months (the likely event of those who use the rhythm method) requires...

“Introduction. The objective was to evaluate the factor structure and propose a new version of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale with only positive items to overcome the method effect associated with negative items. Method. A version A (positive and negative items) and a version B (only positive items) were considered. A sample of 350 university students was collected for each version. Results. The CFA shows that version A's one-dimensional model (A1) does not present adequate fit indices. It was also found that adding a specific factor for negative items (model A2) and another factor for positive items (model A3) does not improve the fit indices. A twodimensional model (A4 model) does not improve the fit indices either. Regarding the onedimensional model of version B, it presents a superior fit compared to the original model (model A1) Discussion and Conclusions. It is concluded that ve...

Traffic congestion frequently occurs in highly populated cities and can result from poor civil planning or inadequate public transportation. This issue increases traffic accidents, air pollution, fuel loss, and public dissatisfaction. Therefore, implementing traffic control systems that improve traffic flow and reduce travel times becomes essential. This work conducts a systematic literature review to identify the most efficient methods, algorithms, and models for developing traffic control systems. The review identifies three methods and three algorithms that are highly efficient for these systems, highlighting Bayesian filters and convolutional neural networks. It also shows that You Only Look Once (YOLO) is the most efficient image processing model for these implementations.

In recent years, autonomous driving technologies have become a topic of growing interest due to the promise of safer and more convenient mode of transportation. An essential element in every autonomous driving system is the control algorithm. Classical control schemes, like PID, are not able to manage Multiple Inputs-Multiple Outputs, complex, non-linear systems. A more recent control strategy is Model predictive control (MPC), a modern control method that has shown promising results in systems with complex dynamics. In MPC, a sequence of optimal control inputs are predicted within a short time horizon based on the car dynamics, and soft or hard restriction of the system. In this work, three different nonlinear-MPC (NMPC) controllers were formulated based on a kinematic, and two dynamic models (double-track and single-track). The steering system’s dynamics were additionally identified ...

The Geostatistics provides effective tools for the solution of many problems of engineering in which the location in the space of the variable under study is considered, based on definitions of mathematics that provide the necessary foundation for its application. In particular, the Geostatistics are applied in the spatial estimation of the recoverable reserves of mineral deposits. The geostatistical methods that are used in the estimation of mineral deposits are implemented in industrial software and consider the evaluation of the complex geological structure, but these softwares only display the obtained results with an input data and do not exhibit the concepts thatthey use during the process or the methodology of its application. This happens particularly with the Kriging method, which is based on the assumption of strict stationarity, taking into account changes in the mean and loca...
