Traditional media (press, radio and television) in South America have better expectations regarding the process of digital transition faced by communication companies and industries on a global level. This hypothesis is contrasted by comparing two elements. First, the evolution trends of the media sector in Latin America collected by sectorial databases of the World Association of Newspapers and New Publishers, the Eurodata´s general audience report, the Pew State of the News Media and the Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2016-2020. Second, the results of an own survey to 166 managers from 19 Latin American countries. Media managers from the area confirm that traditional media will grow up to 5% and digital media and advertising could reach 10% and more in the coming years..

In the age of the Internet, anonymous online users can form a societal reaction by posting large quantities of critique and insulting comments against (perceived) norm violations on social media. These so-called online firestorms, or Enjō in Japanese, tend to include aggressive behavior against the target. This research aims to reveal the dynamics of Enjō and explores how people communicate with each other in the formation process of Enjō by conducting a comparative case study. This study collects tweets posted in five Enjō cases and compares each case to create conceptual categories of the communication process of Enjō. Results show that the participants of Enjō interact with each other to define the problem of concern through exchange of information. Moreover, it is revealed that there are two types of process in the escalation of Enjō, “social problematization” and “villa...

This case study explores the use of online learning environments as an alternative tool for the promotion of undergraduate research culture within an engineering program during the COVID-19 pandemic times. This context entailed the transition from face-to-face to online learning environments, which was taken as an opportunity for the diffusion and socialization of outstanding research projects developed by undergraduate students within the classroom, through the launching of an online event and a virtual permanent exhibition. The results of this case study were measured through quantitative indicators related to the number of research projects submitted by the students for participating in this exhibition, the number of courses participating through these projects, and the number of professors involved. Participation of students and professors increased by 85% and 90%, respectively, comp...

During the COVID-19 pandemic, educational systems had to adapt to the social and health situation immediately. This led to the appearance of the asynchronous teaching model. Throughout the pandemic at an educational level, we can distinguish three phases, eminently online, hybrid, and face-to-face. However, the perception of educational quality in these three educational moments, considering the psychometric profile and cultural differences comparing Ibero-American countries, has not been studied. The study aims to analyze the psychological profile, and perception of quality in the teaching–learning processes at the university stage, during the three processes of educational transition during COVID-19: online, hybrid, and face-to-face. Thus, 1093 university students from Ibero-American countries were studied. Through a questionnaire, demographic, academic, and psychological variables w...

Online comments have been a widespread feature in news media. Although audiences recognize it widely, doubts remain about the purpose of these interactive spaces. Arguably, understanding how media value online comments defines a way which public debates are socially perceived. Based on The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2019, this article analysed current media policies towards online commenting in most accessed news websites in Portugal, Spain and Brazil. Following both a quantitative-qualitative methodology, a direct observation and a textual/visual analysis, this article highlights levels of similarity in these policies: comment sections are still predominantly available (31 from 45); comments are typically placed at the bottom of the page; the interactive options identical (share, like, dislike, report). As the overall cases exclude comment moderation, few media (in Portugal, ...

In this study, a non-experimental, cross-sectional design with a descriptive-correlational scope was used to examine the relationship between cyber victimization and school engagement. There were 391 students who participated, 51.7% male and 48.3% female, aged 13 to 18 years (M=15.3, SD=0.895), from third (24.5%), fourth (38.8%), and fifth (36.5%) grades of secondary school from three private schools in Lima. For data collection, the School Cybervictimization Scale (ECE) and the School Involvement Scale (EIE-A) were applied. Among the results, high levels of cyberbullying victimization were found in 16% and very high levels in 21.7% of students, as well as low levels of school engagement in 20.5% and very low levels in 19.4% of students. Likewise, a statistically significant and inverse relationship was found, with a small effect size, between the variables (p <.01, rs = -.18, r2 = .0...

Because of the growing pandemic of Corona Virus Disease-2019, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) must utilize electronic learning (e-learning). Today's work economy, which is forever in flux because of the creation of new jobs and the continual disappearance of old ones, necessitates an on-the-job shift. Despite HEIs in less-wealthy nations like some countries of Asia being developed countries, in essence, it is much more difficult for students and teachers at these higher learning institutions to deal with the transition to e-learning due to their tight financial restrictions. This study sought to determine whether learners at the start of the COVID-19 Era were ready for e-learning and a connection between demographic variables and readiness for e-learning. A quantitative survey obtained information from 1200 students from elite higher educational institutions in South East Asia. A ma...

The entry into force in June 2022 and for the next twelve years of the new Vertical Block Exemption Regulation (RECAV) and the Guidelines on vertical restraints affect the determination of the anti-competitive or pro-competitive nature of vertical agreements and the possibility of benefit from regulatory safeguard exemptions. This reform carried out by the European Commission is the first regulatory exercise of such magnitude on vertical restraints in response to the rise of marketplaces and e-commerce platforms. It also takes into account political priorities such as digital transition and sustainability. Among the main amendments include the different delimitation of particularly severe restrictions related to the internet, parity obligations, non-compete clauses and the determination of the selling price. On the other hand, significant changes have taken place in the criteria applicab...

In recent years, the music press has resorted to digital content to survive in the Internet era. It is the case of the Spanish magazine Rockdelux, which in 2020 closed its print edition to become an online platform with digital subscriptions. The objective of this research is to define the characteristics of the journalistic coverage developed by this media in its renewed website Rockdelux.com. For this purpose, this study analyzed more than 1,300 articles published during the transition from paper edition to digital edition; through an own methodology developed to compare editorial preferences on specific musical and journalistic genres. The conclusion was that the new Rockdelux with paywall has prioritized writing articles on trending music, such as reggaeton and hip hop —in addition to having increased the publication of short and immediate texts, such as reviews and news.

During the last two decades, the traditional media model of the local press has suffered a deep crisis which, together with the economic one, has led to the closure of many newspapers and staff cuts. The growing need for a truthful local news offer and the adverse labor reality in the communication sector have motivated many journalists to found their own local and hyperlocal media in the network. In this research, an exploratory study is carried out to elaborate the first map of local and hyperlocal online media in Spain, with the objective of knowing the presence of this type of media in the State. Subsequently, these online media are subjected to a content analysis to identify their basic characteristics and development trends. The results show a relevant growth of local and hyperlocal online media in the country, and their features reflect the search for new information models from p...

By early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic paralyzed the world, with the origin being the Chinese city of Wuhan. By March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. The dire consequences of this disease were reflected in a historic global recession, and in the health field, SARS-CoV-2 had wreaked havoc, especially in the elderly, due to worse manifestations and higher mortality rates. As a result, most countries were able to curb the spread of the virus by imposing mandatory measures such as not leaving their homes and very strict timetables. Among the measures considered was the closure of educational institutions, including universities. At that time, there was a paradigm shift in the way educators had to change the way they taught classes by making use of various online platforms. Online, distance and continuing education learning became a panacea for this u...
