This article proposes using neural networks to solve the challenge of accurately measuring the distance of an object using cameras and digital image processing. For this, a neural network was trained using a data set that includes information on the distance in pixels of the centers of mass of the object detected by the cameras. This data was used to teach the network to make an accurate estimate of the actual distance of the object. Image analysis methods were also used in conjunction with images of the object previously captured and trained with YoloV8 on Roboflow. The results obtained showed a notable improvement in the precision that is obtained when measuring the distance without the tedious calibration that is had in the other approaches considered for this investigation. Overcame the challenges associated with camera calibration due to possible distortion, accuracy, and generaliza...

Over the last years, Convolutional Neural Networks have been extensively used for solving problems such as image classification, object segmentation, and object detection. However, deep neural networks require a great deal of data correctly labeled in order to perform properly. Generally, generation and labeling processes are carried out by recruiting people to label the data manually. To overcome this problem, many researchers have studied the use of data generated automatically by a renderer. To the best of our knowledge, most of this research was conducted for general-purpose domains but not for specific ones. This paper presents a methodology to generate synthetic data and train a deep learning model for the segmentation of pieces of machinery. For doing so, we built a computer graphics synthetic 3D scenery with the 3D models of real pieces of machinery for rendering and capturing vi...

Object recognition in videos is one of the main challenges in computer vision. Several methods have been proposed to achieve this task, such as background subtraction, temporal differencing, optical flow, particle filtering among others. Since the introduction of Convolutonal Neural Networks (CNN) for object detection in the Imagenet Large Scale Visual Recognition Competition (ILSVRC), its use for image detection and classification has increased, becoming the state-of-the-art for such task, being Faster R-CNN the preferred model in the latest ILSVRC challenges. Moreover, the Faster R-CNN model, with minimum modifications, has been succesfully used to detect and classify objects (either static or dynamic) in video sequences; in such setup, the frames of the video are input “as is” i.e. without any pre-processing. In this thesis work we propose to use Robust PCA (RPCA, a.k.a. Principal...

Sleepiness could cause different accidents at work and in our daily lives. Activities such as driving a car, handling heavy machinery, being in charge of controlling a satellite or monitoring a nuclear plant, are activities that require short visual and motor reaction times. These reactions could be affected by sleepiness. The highest number of these accidents is related to vehicular accidents. WHO statistics show that 1.2 million people worldwide die every year due to road crashes, 50 million people are injured, and more than 3,000 people die daily from road traffic injuries. The primary objective of the present work is to develop a tool based on techniques of artificial intelligence and image processing that can detect states of sleepiness in people whose work needs the greatest attention-to avoid accidents. The idea is to develop an algorithm that can be executed on a computer and thr...

The project describes the design and implementation of an automatic system for detecting defects in plastic crates for glass bottles. In all companies there is damage and defects in their cases, crates, or containers due to constant use, as they are reusable, and therefore this problem causes various economic losses and a decrease in production, especially in beverage companies. This system was designed to solve and prevent the crates from having defects in their base and containing waste inside, to obtain less product losses in the bottle packaging area. In this research, it is proposed to design the automatic system, which consists of training a convolutional neural network with a database of 136 photographs of waste and defects in the boxes that will be taken by the HQ Raspberry Camera; then programmed into the Raspberry the process of activating the engine so that the box is moved to...

Turbidity is a fundamental parameter for evaluating the quality of drinking water, as it directly affects the effectiveness of treatment processes. This study aims to compare the performance of two YOLOv5 model variants (YOLOv5x and YOLOv5n) in the automated detection of turbidity levels in drinking water treatment plants (PTAP). A dataset containing representative images of various turbidity levels was used and divided into two subsets: one for training and one for testing, following standard practices in computer vision tasks. The models were evaluated using key metrics such as precision, recall, and F1-Score, the latter being a combined measure that balances precision and sensitivity. YOLOv5x, designed for more complex tasks, demonstrated better overall performance, while YOLOv5n—a lighter variant—showed rapid convergence during training, making it suitable for resource-constraine...

The present study proposes a method of automatic detection of tuberculosis (TB) bacilli from digital images of Ziehl Neelsen sputum smear baciloscopy. The method is based on an algorithm that aims to automate the interpretation of optical microscopic images of sputum smears. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a specialist can not analyze and process more than 20 samples per day (in order to not affect the analysis sensitivity and commit errors in diagnosis). Therefore, an automated tool as the proposed here, is an important contribution to the current efforts to fight tuberculosis. The algorithm is based on geometric eccentricity of ellipses and improvement of RGB component tones. Correspondence functions adjusted to sample preparation conditions were applied in order to improve the RGB primary component tones of the image. This allows to obtain an adequate segmentation of...

The detection of marine vessels for revenue control has many tracking deficiencies, which has resulted in losses of logistical resources, time, and money. However, digital cameras are not fully exploited since they capture images to recognize the vessels and give immediate notice to the control center. The analyzed images go through an incredibly detailed process, which, thanks to neural training, allows us to recognize vessels without false positives. To do this, we must understand the behavior of object detection; we must know critical issues such as neural training, image digitization, types of filters, and machine learning, among others. We present results by comparing two development environments with their corresponding algorithms, making the recognition of ships immediately under neural training. In conclusion, it is analyzed based on 100 images to measure the boat detection capab...

The research studies the dynamics of the volatility of the nominal exchange rate of the Peruvian nuevo sol against the US dollar, with the aim of identifying signs of dependencies over long time distances. The existence of persistence in the increases in yields and the volatility process is explored by applying two tests based on periodograms, the Hurst exponent is estimated, its consistency over time and the graphical analysis of its distributions for the subsequent application of the algorithm of complex dynamics. For this objective, the time series of the nominal exchange rate of the nuevo sol against the dollar from January 3, 2013 to February 11, 2021 is used. A nongeometric decay was identified in the correlograms in its nonlinear transformation and estimates of the fractional integration parameter d > 0 together with the empirical and rescaled Hurst estimates H > 0.5, therefore it...

Natural vibrissae fulfill a lot of functions. Next to object distance detection and object shape recognition, the surface texture can be determined. Inspired by the natural process of surface texture detection, the goal is to adapt it by technical concepts. Modeling the vibrissa as an EulerBernoulli bending beam and the vibrissa-surface contact with respect to Coulomb's Law of Friction, the first approach is formed by the group of Steigenberger and Behn. Due to the surface contact, the vibrissa gets deformed. Initiating a linear movement of the beam support in the way that the bearn tip gets pushed, first the beam tip is sticking to the surface. The acting friction force prevents a movement of the beam tip until the static friction coeflicient is reached. The displacement of the support corresponds to changes in the acting forces and moment. Out of these changes the coeflicient of stat...
