Morris water maze (MWM) test is widely used to evaluate the learning and memory deficits in rodents. Image processing and pattern recognition can be used to analyse videos and recognize automatically the tracking in MWM. There are several commercial and free access software that allows analyzing the behavioral tasks although they also have limitations such as automation, cost, user intervention among other things. The aim of this paper was to develop a new image processing technique to automatically analyse the track of the rat in the MWM, which we called RatsTrack. The MWM test was performed with an animal model for Alzheimer, and the videos were recorded to measure the distance, time, and speed. The segmentation method based on the projection of the video frames was made for pool identification, eliminating the rat, while conserving the shape of the pool. Then, the Hough transformation...

The EduBPMN method contains a set of transformation rules that allow the generation of Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) from a BPMN model complemented by the UML class diagram. The article proposes new rules for the EduBPMN method based on BPMN primitives and operations of the UML classes. These rules can generate design alternatives for GUIs, each of which has been proposed to be represented by a stereotype. As a result of this work, four new rules and eight new stereotypes have been proposed to extend the EduBPMN method. For a better understanding of the contribution, it has been applied to an illustrative example of a project.

We describe a simple method for the preparation of gold-decorated silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) by the in situ precipitation method using simple BH4? ions reduction as a procedure, where BH4? ions are adsorbed onto PEI-functionalized SiO2 NPs for stabilizing and reducing gold ions onto PEI-SiO2 surface in water under ambient conditions. The result was 3-nm gold nanoshell NPs attached to SiO2 core (~ 75 nm) with a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at ~ 680 nm. SPR band is associated with Au NP aggregates that arise from strong interparticle interaction. This is an alternative to the gold-seeding methods and the use of anionic gold species for the obtention of gold-decorated SiO2 NPs with an important red-shift in UV–Vis absorption and with potential applications in biosensors and photothermal therapy.

The heart of the grid is the power transformer and it is associated to all the electrical chain for distribution, transmission and generation field. Usually the evaluation of the remaining life and condition is based on Furan analysis or dissolved gas analysis (DGA); however, both requires oil samples; in a zero downtime policy, the continuous evaluation requires an additional equipment as online DGA equipment. Due to this limitation, the alternative is the evaluation of the “hot-spot temperature” (HST) in the transformers, with the sensors available in the oil, and winding; but an online evaluation has not been considered in the international standards as IEC 60076-7. So, this paper develops the mathematical model, algorithms and evaluates in a real case study, an optional method to obtain the HST and its impacts in the remaining life. This methodology is applied to three phase tran...

Ocean waves contain the highest energy density among renewable energy sources. However, harnessing the energy from ocean waves represents a challenge because wave energy converters (WECs) must be designed to have great survivability and efficiency. The power production challenge of any WEC depends on the power take-off (PTO) system efficiency. Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms have been widely applied in renewable energy from photovoltaic and wind sources, and have subsequently been adapted to wave energy converters (WECs). Energy extraction is optimized by applying MPPT, resulting in an increase in efficiency. This study aims to address the analysis of the influence of the perturb and observe MPPT in the electrical power performance of a WEC composed of a point absorber, a hinged arm and a direct mechanical drive PTO system. The PTO is characterized by a pulley system, a co...

Background: Drones are reliable tools for estimating colonial seabird numbers. Although most research has focused on methods of improving the accuracy of bird counts, few studies have evaluated the impacts of these methods on bird behavior. In this study, we examined the effects of the DJI Phantom 3 drone approach (altitude, horizontal and vertical descent speeds) on changes in the intensity of behavioral response of guano birds: guanay cormorants (Phalacrocorax bougainvilli), Peruvian boobies (Sula variegata) and Peruvian pelicans (Pelecanus thagus). The breeding and non-breeding condition was also evaluated. Methods: Eleven locations along the Peruvian coast were visited in 2016-2017. Drone flight tests considered an altitude range from 5 to 80 m from the colony level, a horizontal speed range from 0.5 to 15 m/s, and a vertical descent speed range from 0.5 to 3 m/s. The intensity of th...

The performance of discrete element method (DEM) simulations is highly dependent on the requirements of the associated algorithms in terms of computer memory usage and CPU time. In particular, computer CPU time heavily depends on the identification of neighbor particles and the computation of particle-particle interactions. Over the years several neighbor particles searching methods have been developed. Accordingly, in this work the performance of two of well-known searching methods, linked cell and Verlet tables algorithms, are assessed in the context of the development of a new DEM-based tool. More specifically, the neighbor searching methods performance and related computational costs are parametrically analyzed and an assessment of their suitability for carrying the intended numerical simulations is provided. The referred numerical simulations are performed accounting for a canonical...

This study is devoted to reviewing and analyzing current trends in engineering research methods, concentratingon modeling and simulation, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and complex systems engineering. Selected and analyzed academic articles published within the last five years were used to create a critical analysis. Despite the associated challenges, such as the need for new competencies and resources, the results indicated that these emergent methods significantly impact the engineering field. However, significant voids were also identified, including the inability to solve engineering problems innovatively and efficiently. This study concludes by emphasizing the need for additional in-depth research into these trends and their effects on various engineering disciplines.

The coexistence allows the adaptation of the aggressors and assaulted in school communities through artistic interaction techniques. Due to its transformational value, artivist education allows students to be involved in raising awareness of their environment as well as themselves. For this reason, the interest of the research was to determine the benefits of artivism in school coexistence. Three studies based on sustainability, school exchange and meaning analysis were carried out in 80 fifth and sixth grade primary students. Measurement scales and the log of experiences were used, from whose data it was obtained that there was greater sustainability of direct and democratic coexistence from the fourth month of experimentation with activities based on artivist education (Experiment 1), as well as effects on school exchange with greater emphasis on the democratic component (Experiment 2)...

The minimum variance (MV) beamformer is an adaptive beamforming method that has the potential to enhance the resolution and contrast of ultrasound images. Although the sensitivity of the MV beamformer to steering vector errors and array calibration errors is well-documented in other fields, in ultrasound it has been tested only under gross sound speed errors. Several robust MV beamformers have been proposed, but have mainly reported robustness only in the presence of sound speed mismatches. Additionally the impact of PAC methods in mitigating the effects of phase aberration in MV beamformed images has not been observed Accordingly, this thesis report consists on two parts. On the first part, a more complete analysis of the effects of different types of aberrators on conventional MV beamforming and on a robust MV beamformer from the literature (Eigenspace-based Minimum Variance (ESMV) bea...
