The performance of discrete element method (DEM) simulations is highly dependent on the requirements of the associated algorithms in terms of computer memory usage and CPU time. In particular, computer CPU time heavily depends on the identification of neighbor particles and the computation of particle-particle interactions. Over the years several neighbor particles searching methods have been developed. Accordingly, in this work the performance of two of well-known searching methods, linked cell and Verlet tables algorithms, are assessed in the context of the development of a new DEM-based tool. More specifically, the neighbor searching methods performance and related computational costs are parametrically analyzed and an assessment of their suitability for carrying the intended numerical simulations is provided. The referred numerical simulations are performed accounting for a canonical...

Thermodynamic simulation models have been developed to observe the behavior of the minor elements Zn, Pb, As, Sb and Bi; as well as the major elements Cu, Fe, Si, 0 and S in the conversion and fusion processes: NORANDA and ISASMELT for the production of copper-rich mattes. The Noranda process shows a steady state model for obtaining a high-grade matte in metallic copper. The lsasmelt process is based on the concept of the two independent reaction sites in the bath (slag-killing interface): rapid oxidation and slow reduction. The heat balance of the process and the distribution thermodynamics of the minor elements are united and expressed in terms of the process variables such as temperature, enriched 02, composition of the charge, degree of matte and content of the magnetite in the Slag and other variables are incorporated into the modeling, which can predict the operating effects of che...

The implementation of any software development process involves the consumption of critical resources. Software engineers cannot experiment with different development processes before starting them in real projects, due to the time that would entail and the amount of elements that are involved, so it is vital to have tools that allow the pre-visualization of the results of executing the software development process and how the environmental variables affect it, thus being able to anticipate under what conditions the software development process will be deployed. This paper presents the modelling and simulation of a software development process using System Dynamics (SD), which allows the graphical representation of the elements intervening in the software process, and the incorporation of as many relevant elements as possible. As a software costs estimation reference, the COCOMO estimati...

For the best performance and longer duration of devices or elements that participate in a mechanical energy transport system, they require an adequate lubrication process in the areas exposed to friction: bearings, gears, cylinder-piston, etc. This process is very important for the optimal functioning of the system, since it reduces repair costs and unscheduled failures. One of the frequent problems of poor lubrication is generated by the Cavitation phenomenon, for this reason it is important to study its effects under operating conditions. In the present work, the formulation and numerical simulation of Cavitation in bearings is carried out, considering the variation of the viscosity of the lubricant in relation to the pressure and the distribution space. In other works carried out on this phenomenon, it is mentioned how complex it would be to develop a numerical process in a two-dimens...

Background and Objective: A previous study investigated the in vitro release of methylene blue (MB), a widely used cationic dye in biomedical applications, from nanocellulose/nanoporous silicon (NC/nPSi) composites under conditions simulating body fluids. The results showed that MB release rates varied significantly with the nPSi concentration in the composite, highlighting its potential for controlled drug delivery. To further analyze the relationship between diffusion dynamics and the MB concentration, this study developed a finite element (FE) method to solve Fick’s equations governing the drug delivery system. Methods: Release profiles of MB from NC/nPSi composites with varying nPSi concentrations (0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1.0%) were experimentally measured in triplicate using phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at 37 °C, pH 7.4, and 100 rpm. Mathematical models incorporating linear and q...

Tailings dams are complex geotechnical structures that require a thorough analysis of their stability. The traditional method for assessing stability, the Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM), focuses on calculating the factor of safety (FS), but omits critical aspects such as the stress distribution along the regrowth process. The finite element method (FEM), based on the strength reduction technique (SSR), is an alternative that allows calculating the FS and understanding the real behavior of the slope, by analysing stresses along the different raises stage. In this study, the FEM method was used to simulate the Ancash tailings dam, Peru. The simulation allowed obtaining detailed information on the stress states to which the soil foundation is subjected at each stage of regrowth. The results obtained in terms of displacements and stresses provided a more accurate understanding of the failure...

The geometallurgical model is a tool that allows evaluating the necessity of mineral deposits from the geological, processing and production point of view. With this, it is possible to estimate the most realistic net present value and significantly reduce the technical-operational risk that occurs in the feasibility stages of a mining project. In the present investigation, an exhaustive search has been carried out on studies focused on geometallurgical modeling in porphyry copper deposits in which it has been estimated and simulated as geometallurgical total copper grade, oxide copper, penalizing elements, metallurgical recovery, bond work index and of abrasion. Through this research, it is evident that by incorporating geometallurgical attributes in the estimation of mineral resources, it is possible to better quantify the spatial variability of the deposit, anticipate those minerals th...

Companies engaged in mining vehicle rental face challenges in adequately inspecting the condition of suspension springs due to time constraints. To address this issue and monitor the suspension of Toyota Hilux trucks before and after rental service, we propose a prototype development of an autonomous robot. The robot utilizes a SLAM-based navigation system to reach specified positions, while a robot arm control system positions a camera for inspecting spring suspension profiles. We studied the vehicle and robot arm position control systems, conducted dynamic simulations of the robot arm, designed the robot system architecture using ROS, simulated the robot using ROS Gazebo, and developed an algorithm to generate a technical inspection report with registered spring photographs. Navigation is facilitated by an A1M8 Lidar sensor. Data processing is performed using a Raspberry Pi 4B 8 GB wit...

Magnetron sputtering system is a technique that consists in extracting atoms from a target material by collisions of energetic ions of an inert gas. It is widely used in semiconductor industries and materials processing research for developing thin films by deposition. During this process a low temperature capacitively coupled plasma is generated near the cathode and several variations of the properties of this plasma can affect the thin film deposition process and quality. An approach to study these types of systems is by computational modeling. The use of robust computational codes that can handle complicated geometries and can solve complex systems of differential equations. In this present project we aim to model numerically a system of magnetrons developed at the Materials Science and Renewable Energies (MatER) laboratory. Using the geometry measurements and the material properties ...

This paper describes the results of a numerical study of a full-scale adobe building model tested on a shaking table. Material properties of adobe masonry were calibrated to represent the wall in-plane seismic behavior, based on a prior numerical analysis of an adobe wall carried out by the authors. The inelastic part of the constitutive model was represented by a softening curve in tension and by a hardening/softening behavior in compression; thus, the fracture energy is a key issue in the modeling process. A finite element model that relies on a homogenous continuum approach was developed in Abaqus/Explicit software. The damage evolution in the numerical simulation represented fairly well the experimental crack pattern, for in-plane and out-of-plane seismic effects. Overall, the calibrated material properties and the explicit solution scheme proved to be appropriate for simulating the ...

The flow of a laminar fluid that filters through a porous medium is considered. This behavior leads to the formulation of a mathematical model that, through the Baiocchi transformation, allows it to be expressed as a free boundary problem. In this we wish to evaluate the pressure gradient of the fluid in the medium. The present work consists of the following: i) variational formulation of the problem il) study ofthe existence and uniqueness of the solution and iii) numerical resolution of the problem ofgenerated convex minimization. To find the numerical solution of the variational inequality, the Finite Element method and the Uzawa algorithm have been used.In the numerical simulation of the dam problem, the domain has been consideredof computational calculation, a rectangular IR geometry, assuming as known boundaries, the impermeable zone, the one in contact with the air and the one tha...

The present work entitled "Modeling the Embedding Process Using the Finite Element Method". This study aims to obtain a methodology and a simple sequence that leads to a rapid and consistent formulation in such a way that a computer simulation can be carried out. Determining what types of considerations should be taken into account to formulate a simulation approach in the sausage, establishing the relevant methodology that guides us throughout the modeling process, making the most appropriate formulation, choosing the most appropriate elements, and determining the distribution and behavior of the mechanical parameters during the sausage process. In such a way that they can increase their level of capacity, performance of the process, as well as greatly reduce the sausage tests since we would know with much more accuracy what could happen during the sausage and if any problem arises we w...
