The purpose of this paper is to put forward a hypothesis about the “philological translation” of literary texts of increased complexity and test it on the material of specific works. Based on the material of Russian and foreign translation studies, this paper formulates the concept of “philological translation” in the appendix to a specific publishing project within the series “Literary monuments” published by the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and considers the most important practical aspects of the problem of adequate translation of literary texts of increased complexity. The analysis of the translation of two works by the representative of the French New Novel Claude Simon illustrates clearly the example of a “philological translation”. In the course of the study, the authors came to the conclusion that a philological translation imp...

The transition of the 30S initiation complex (IC) to the translating 70S ribosome after 50S subunit joining provides an important checkpoint for mRNA selection during translation in bacteria. Here, we study the timing and control of reactions that occur during 70S IC formation by rapid kinetic techniques, using a toolbox of fluorescence-labeled translation components. We present a kinetic model based on global fitting of time courses obtained with eight different reporters at increasing concentrations of 50S subunits. IF1 and IF3 together affect the kinetics of subunit joining, but do not alter the elemental rates of subsequent steps of 70S IC maturation. After 50S subunit joining, IF2-dependent reactions take place independent of the presence of IF1 or IF3. GTP hydrolysis triggers the efficient dissociation of fMet-tRNAfMet from IF2 and promotes the dissociation of IF2 and IF1 from the ...

This paper analyzes the potential benefits of including value-added services content as a means of diversifying translation training curricula. ‘Value-added service’ is a term used in the language industry (EN 15038, 2006; ISO 17100, 2015) to refer to an open catalogue of differentiated language services offered by Language Service Providers (LSP). Such services require the exercise of basic core translation and intercultural skills but also entail differences when compared to more general, conventional translation tasks. Differentiation factors include specific technological input and different processes, formats and managerial frameworks, each of which require specific skills from the language professional. From a situational perspective (Calvo, 2015; González-Davies y Enríquez-Raído, 2016; Risku, 2002, 2009, 2016; Vienne, 1994), this paper reviews different approaches to the us...

As of the publication of the Law on Indigenous Languages (Law 29735), the use of native languages in any public and private space has become more relevant in Peru. The proof of this are television projects that include languages other than Spanish; even the creators of this content demonstrate a position in favor of the diffusion of the native languages and their culture. The objective of this article is to analyze the translation work performed by the interpreters of the micronoticist Letras TV Willakun to evaluate it as a case of language activism in favor of theQuechua language and culture. The work concludes that, after interviewing the interpreters and part of the program’s audience, this is a case of important developing activism in the university environment, despite its difficulties in the translation process.

A 1693 document sheds light on the translation into Castilian of witness testimonies uttered in the lengua general and recorded in writing a century earlier, as part of the activities of the interpreters-general in Lima’s appellate court (audiencia). The case demonstrates the official admission of written Quechua in judicial procedures as late as the closing decades of the seventeenth century. It reinforces the idea that the use of one or more standard varieties of Quechua by litigants and interpreters made the interpretive work of these translators in plurilingual contexts such as the court’s judicial district possible.

This paper analyses the reframing strategies (Baker, 2006) and transfer of communicational functions (Nord, 2010) in some news translated by state-owned Peruvian News Agency Andina (Agencia Peruana de Noticias Andina) from Spanish to English. This media platform uses translation to expand its readership to foreigners that might be interested in visiting and investing in Peru (Andina, 2016, par. 14), thus helping the nation's economy to grow. The study is based on a bilingual corpus of 114 news articles published in the economics and tourism sections during 2019. The contrastive text analysis showed how Andina reframes the translations to adapt them into a new sociocultural context, reflecting the discourse of the Peru brand. Andina translations reveal the use of reframing strategies to recontextualize events having an impact on Peruvian economy, to herald a "patriotic" discourse that hig...

This article describes the first step in a Teaching Innovation Project in Universidad de Santiago de Chile, which includes the project’s design and the methodological aspects required for its implementation and evaluation. Experts from different academic units will give students real translation assignments (specified in a translation brief) and will consult with them so as to contribute to the development of their thematic translation competence. This project will be implemented in the Specialized Social Science English-Spanish Translation course (4th year) of the Bachelor of Linguistics Applied to Translation degree program during the September 2017 semester. The proposal is based on contributions from Kiraly (2000) stating that the most effective way for students to develop professional competences is by offering them opportunities to interact with their classmates and with experts....

This research is framed within the area of translation and interpreting studies and more specifically within the field of translation didactics. The general research objective of this study is to observe and analyze the repercussions of Translation undergraduate courses at five different universities in Spain. With empirical methods combining quantitative and qualitative analysis relying on a macro-study of more than 1,000 subjects and a longitudinal study of 37 students, the research focuses specifically on the development of the strategic competence (SC) and, particularly, the student’s capacity to identify and describe translation problems. Furthermore, in the case of the longitudinal study, four hypotheses were tested against the students’ answers. In this paper, we present the results of hypothesis number 4: whether the richness of the metalanguage used by the TI students evolve...

This article analyzes the manuscript ANC1-960-T-1219, which contains the Spanish translation of two works by Sallust: The Conspiracy of Catiline and The Jugurthine War. In our research we have determined that the text of the testimony corresponds to a mid-fifteenth century translation by Francisco Vidal de Noya, a person close to the Aragonese court and mentor of King Ferdinand the Catholic. In this study we analyze the manuscript from a graphic, morphosyntactic and lexical point of view, which allows us to investigate the possible linguistic influence of the peninsular east in this historiographic text in Spanish. Furthermore, we will compare some of the analyzed phenomena with the text from the first edition of the translation, printed in Zaragoza in 1493, in order to observe the possible linguistic variants between the manuscript and the printed version.

The aim of this study is to identify epistemological trends in translation research published in the Renati repository of Sunedu 2013 to2020. For this purpose, substantive research at a descriptive level was carried out. Documentary analysis techniques and corpus linguistics were used to identify ontological and methodological trends in 339 translation research abstracts from four Peruvian universities: Universidad Femenina del Sagrado Corazon, Universidad Ricardo Palma, Universidad Cesar Vallejo and Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas. The findings suggest that there is a preference for product-oriented research in translation, qualitative approach, and descriptive level. As for data collection instruments, results are varied, the most used being analysis sheets, surveys, and interviews

Literary translation means transferring information from an originallanguage into another, a complex task for a translator who has topreviously make a textual and intertextual analysis of, in this case, twopoems, in order to build a version in the second language. Then, bothworks are put across for intertextual comparison.

The aim of this study is to review translation research published in recognized translation journals to determine translation studies trends. To this end, 73 articles were analyzed from the following journals Translation Studies, The Interpreter and Translator Trainer y Perspectives, Studies in Translation Theory and Practice. Qualitative data were selected and reduced to facilitate the textual analysis of these articles. The object of study, keywords, objectives, field of study and place of production were the categories of analysis. The results show a different object of study from those most studied in our environment. Most of the research is descriptive. As for the fields of study, they refer mostly to the didactics of translation and the sociology of translation and the translator as well as of the interpreter.
