Cyanidation (leaching with cyanide) is a common yet complex surface process in hydrometallurgical practice, and its effectiveness in extracting the metal of interest is often affected by the nature of the mineralogical species that are present. Little is known about surface processes on acanthite (a silver sulfide) and how its various facets respond to cyanidation in aqueous solution. Therefore, in this work, some properties of both bulk acanthite (Ag2S) and its (001), (022), and (1̅21) surface facets have been studied by density-functional-theory (DFT)-based calculations to elucidate reactivity trends and competitive adsorption (initial stages in the surface process of cyanidation) between cyanide and other species present in the leaching liquor. It is found that CN– binds by its C-end to silver sites on the acanthite surface with adsorption energy similar to that of OH– but strong...

This thesis will be oriented in the study of open quantum systems. The transition of processes that go between the Markovian and non-Markovian regime will be studied. The diagnose of non-Markovianity will be made in terms of the variation of the coherence of the state. Accordingly, an optical setup will be implemented that allows us to manipulate certain degrees of freedom, like the polarization and the optical path. Theoretically, we have found that the coherence of the system is transferred to the environment and it decreases as we move a parameter that we will take as time. This situation has been confirmed in the experiment. Then, due to the second part of the setup, which produces a non-Markovian evolution by also changing one of its parameters, we have accomplished the goal of returning the information back into the system and to measure the non-Markovianity of the process.

This thesis discusses the No-Deleting Theorem in the context of quantum mechanics, and from an informational and thermodynamic point of view. The theorem is proved, and distinction is made between deletion and erasure. Erasure is further discussed through Maxwell’s Demon and Landauer’s principle, which are linked to one another by the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This leads to relate erasure with measurement and work. A setup for deletion simulation is proposed by use of linear optics supplemented by processes such as spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Finally, the No-Deleting Theorem is compared to other No-Go Theorems, and implication relations are proved (demonstrated) between it, the No-Signalling Theorem and the Second Law of Thermodynamics.Termodinámica. Esto conduce a relacionar el concepto de borrado (erasure) con medición y trabajo. Se propone un montaje experimental...

We present the simulation of the application of the Model-based Predictive Control (MPC) of the drum level in a Combined Cycle Plant in order to minimize the time for reaching the highest capacity of plant, around 225 MW. In contrast to others control techniques, our simulation yields that the MPC has shown capabilities as to reach its expected power in about 40 minutes before than PID, time which normally takes the whole industrial process under this control. In the present study, we have tested up to three different reference functions in order to compare performance during the drum level control. According to the simulations, the MPC working together with these reference functions is seen to be promising in the sense of providing efficiency to the plant from the startup until the time when system is reaching 225 MW. We have also calculated a minor discrepancy of order of lees than 5%.

Surface passivation is a widely used technique to reduce the recombination losses at the semiconductor surface. The passivating layer performance can be mainly characterized by two parameters: The fixed charge density (Q(ox)) and the interface trap density (D-it) which can be extracted from Capacitance-Voltage measurements (CV). In this paper, simulations of High-Frequency Capacitance-Voltage (HF-CV) curves were developed using simulated passivation parameters in order to examine the reliability of measured results. The D-it was modelled by two different sets of functions: First, the sum of Gaussian functions representing different dangling bond types and exponential tails for strained bonds. Second, a simpler U-shape model represented by the sum of exponential tails and a constant value function was employed. These simulations were validated using experimental measurements of a referenc...

The performance of discrete element method (DEM) simulations is highly dependent on the requirements of the associated algorithms in terms of computer memory usage and CPU time. In particular, computer CPU time heavily depends on the identification of neighbor particles and the computation of particle-particle interactions. Over the years several neighbor particles searching methods have been developed. Accordingly, in this work the performance of two of well-known searching methods, linked cell and Verlet tables algorithms, are assessed in the context of the development of a new DEM-based tool. More specifically, the neighbor searching methods performance and related computational costs are parametrically analyzed and an assessment of their suitability for carrying the intended numerical simulations is provided. The referred numerical simulations are performed accounting for a canonical...

An interesting application of the prospective technology called Internet of Bio-Nano Things (IoBNT) is in the territory of the medicine. It's expected that this technology plays the role as tool of surveillance of the functionalities of the human organs. To accomplish that, the deployment of nanodevices very near to organs should be a must. However, the idea to deploy nanodevices should be sustained in basis of basic processes, as the ones of physics for instance. In this paper, a physics model based on electrodynamics describing all those processes of anomalous fluxing of albumin in the very beginning of the diabetes kidney disease (DKD), and tested with the assistance of the Monte Carlo method is presented. According to the simulations, signal can be identified in those scenarios where is assumed that the nanosensor has the capabilities to defeat noise or background substantially. For ...

This re...

This work studies the interaction between natural dyes obtained from Peruvian Zea mays and Bixa orellana seeds and nanostructured titanium dioxide, in order to evaluate their function as sensitizers into solar cell devices. The effective attachment of dyes to the TiO2 layer is corroborated by the comparison of UV-Visible absorption and FT-IR spectra of the extracted dye solutions and sensitized TiO2 electrodes. The principal compounds from the seed extraction of Zea mays and Bixa orellana are cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) and bixin respectively, which were analyzed in an isolated dye/cluster TiO2 system by molecular dynamic simulation. The results showed that chemisorption is carried out through a consecutive deprotonation process, and Ti-O bond formation by the monodentate OH and COOH anchoring groups, for C3G and bixin respectively. Finally, we tested the effect of the dye - TiO2 interact...

Memory charts like EWMA-S2 or CUSUM-S2 are designed to detect a particular change in the process variance efficiently. However, the charts could be inefficient to detect some other shifts. To overcome this constraint, control charts with adaptive schemes that are efficient for a wide range of shifts can be used. This work proposes new adaptive EWMA charts for the dispersion (AEWMA-S2) based on an adaptive smoothing parameter that relates its value to the potential shift of the process. A Markov chain approach is used to optimize its design. A simulation experiment shows the advantage of the proposed charts. © 2020 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
