No data to crawl? Monolingual corpus creation from PDF files of truly low-resource languages in Peru

We introduce new monolingual corpora for four indigenous and endangered languages from Peru: Shipibo-konibo, Ashaninka, Yanesha and Yine. Given the total absence of these languages in the web, the extraction and processing of texts from PDF files is relevant in a truly low-resource language scenario. Our procedure for monolingual corpus creation considers language-specific and language-agnostic steps, and focuses on educational PDF files with multilingual sentences, noisy pages and low-structured content. Through an evaluation based on language modelling and character-level perplexity on a subset of manually extracted sentences, we determine that our method allows the creation of clean corpora for the four languages, a key resource for natural language processing tasks nowadays.

This article is based on research conducted by the authors between 2011 and 2012, in the framework of the implementation of research projects, sponsored by the Scientifi c Research Institute of the University of Lima (IDIC). In such research, the technological evolution of the Datacenter was analyzed, and the creation of the technology and management aspects of a Virtualized Datacenter (DCV) were proposed, in order to provide services for the development of laboratories in the academic university fi eld. The findings of this research were applied in the planning process of the “Laboratory Datacenter” of the Systems Engineering Career at the University of Lima, which was used in implementing the new syllabus.

Social entrepreneurship is a concept often associated with ventures to develop products or services for national or international markets and the social benefits they generate. However, little is known about the impact of social entrepreneurship on indigenous communities such as those found in the Peruvian Amazon. This paper examines social value creation following the implementation of an educational process based on the development of entrepreneurship skills in leaders of multiethnic communities in Loreto, Peru. A quasi-experimental design was used to establish a comparison between an experimental group and a control group. It was found that the leaders of the intervention group outperformed the control group in terms of the promotion of collective learning, a higher level of association and a greater capacity to interact with institutions that support community development.

This study investigated how advertisers from the creation area of large advertising agencies perceive and characterize their creative process. Thirteen Brazilian professionals were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed by content analysis. Results indicate that several stages of the creative process overlap, such as the incubation period of one job functioning as the preparation for the next. Motivating factors include pleasure of the act of creating, media visibility and its social reach. Limiting factors include the agencies’ excessive departmentalization, reduced deadlines, and the clients’ subjectivity influencing the advertisement approval.

The present investigation has focused on the analysis of the uncertainty of geospatial data in the initial stage of oil exploration. Through the evaluation of reliability indices of different data processing methods, a method has been developed that considers Voluntary Geographical Information (VGI) as a new data source and Geodatabase (GDB) as the repository where this information has been validated. With the creation of “Uncertainty Sphere” artifact that has been based on the algorithms of Guide for the Expression of Uncertainty and Measurement (GUM) and the recommendations of ISO 19157: 2013, Geographic Data Quality, Uncertainty Space has been delimited from data collected. The application of a Geographic Information System (GIS) has managed input data (IGV), geospatial processing (artifacts), storage (GDB) and information products (maps). As a case of study, geopositioning uncert...

In Argentina, the Personal Data Protection Law No. 25,326, along with its Regulatory Decree No. 1558/2001, introduces in its Article 26 norms related to the provision of credit services, imposing obligations on data controllers and recognizing rights to data subjects. In this article, we will analyze the current regulatory framework, offering comments from a comparative law perspective. We will examine legislation in the region and in European Union countries. We will also review the most relevant jurisprudential cases in Argentina related to the provision of credit services under Law No. 25,326, and the interpretation of the supervisory authority regarding Article 26. We will finally review the different proposed reforms to Article 26 presented in the Argentine Congress, with emphasis on the project to replace Law No. 25,326, recently introduced by the Executive Branch, and on...

The aim of this article is to provide the reader a documentary record on the subject of the technological infrastructure and the knowledge management of big data analytics and their relation to human rights. Currently, human rights violations around the world due to the indiscriminate use of big data analytics is a constant, since the information that is generated every day and every second by the use of technological devices —such as smartphones— makes possible the collection of information, that goes from consumption data to even private information, such as religious opinions or biometric data. Human rights violations due to big data analytics starts by the way personal data is collected and treated. Sometimes people do not know how their data are being processed, stored or used.As a result of the analysis, it was observed that several articles, books and papers refer to personal ...

The global consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) has experienced a rapid increase, particularly in developed urban environments. This trend has been associated with a rise in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases, suggesting potential risks to human health. Therefore, the study aimed to analyze trends and models of scientific production related to UPF and public health. To conduct the research, 139 documents were gathered from the Scopus database, using keywords such as "ultra-processed food" and "public health." Data were processed using VosViewer and Bibliometrix software to create cienciometric map networks. It is noteworthy that research has been growing from 2020 to 2023, with a total of 123 published articles. Brazil stands out as the country with the highest contribution, with Monteiro CA as the principal and most cited researcher. The two institutions with the highest ...
