This study estimates the economic costs of mining pollution on water resources for the years 2008 and 2009 based on the conceptual framework of Environmental Efficiency. This framework identifies such costs as the mining companies’ trade-off between increasing production that is saleable at market prices (desirable output) and reducing the environmental pollution that emerges from the production process (undesirable output). These economic costs were calculated from parametric and non parametric production possibility frontiers for 28 and 37 mining units in 2008 and 2009, respectively, which were under the purview of the National Campaign for Environmental Monitoring of Effluent and Water Resources, conducted by the Energy and Mining Investment Supervisory Agency (Osinergmin) in those years. The results show that the economic cost of mining pollution on water resources rose to U.S. $ 8...

In modern industry, electric motors are essential components in a wide range of applications, from manufacturing production to transportation and power generation. These motors are critical in industrial machinery and equipment, and their proper functioning is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency and productivity. However, motors are susceptible to various types of faults that can be costly in terms of downtime, production loss, and repair expenses. Early detection of these faults is essential to prevent unscheduled shutdowns, reduce maintenance costs, and avoid workplace accidents. This paper proposes a low-cost, real-time fault detection system for motors placed on the Non-Drive End based on neural networks, aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing maintenance costs in the industry.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a widely used material in container manufacturing, particularly in bottle production. It is characterized by its low cost and widespread availability. However, its improper disposal has significantly exacerbated global plastic pollution. For instance, less than 50% of plastic bottles are recycled. Moreover, studies indicate that this issue has led to a significant accumulation of plastic waste in the oceans, which continues to grow annually and could be considered floating islands of debris. This study proposes replacing PET with polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer with suitable properties for bottle production. PLA also has a shorter decomposition time compared to PET, contributing to the reduction of carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. The research methodology included a diagnostic phase to define objectives, i...

The study proposed an inventory policy for its products with the highest demand based on the analysis of the application of three planning techniques, which were the Silver Meal method, the minimum unit cost method and the EOQ. In addition, forecasting techniques were applied with a bimonthly historical data from the sales record that helped identify the products with the highest demand according to the ABC classification. The methodology carried out in a grocery store in Peru found that the demand behavior differed in each product; so, the standard deviation was analyzed. Then, the application of the three planning techniques was compared where a similarity in the frequency of orders and quantity between the Silver Meal and MCU was observed; on the other hand, the EOQ functioned as a preliminary step to identify a reorder point.

Compliance programs and systems of criminal or administrative liability are being increasingly adopted by different countries as measures meant to reduce the social cost of white collar criminality. However, the legal application of these measures does not always ponder correctly the impacts on common good, the levels of economic activity and the adequate functioning of markets of goods and services. Eventually, this situation can lead to undesired effects, such as the inefficiency of the criminal system, the reduction of economic activity or the arising of obstacles to competition. By taking these circumstances into account, in this paper we will utilize the Economic Analysis of Law to analyze the logic that inspires these legal institutes and the incentives they generate. Our objective is to delineate some parameters that allow legislators, judges, legal advisors and businessmen to eva...

Depression is regarded as a widespread mental condition that affects people of all ages. It has a negative impact on a variety of aspects of life, including mood, vigor, and interests in enjoying activities. In the most severe cases, depression can also result in suicide. creating the chance for collaboration between mental health professionals and the use of technical tools to enhance the assessment of the severity of depression to offer the patient with an ideal clinical diagnosis and an appropriate referral to begin treatment. The COVID-19 epidemic in Peru has decreased face-to-face interaction and quick access to medical professionals, making it more difficult for patients’ mental health to be identified or treated effectively, which results in the disease becoming chronic, psychological suffering, and high costs associated with specialized care. The implementation of a technology ...

The films can be obtained from renewable resources such as polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids. Potato starch is a polysaccharide found in abundance, low cost, biodegradable, edible, and can be obtained from agro-industrial waste. In the present study, biodegradable films were obtained from potato starch mixed with montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT) as crosslinking agent and glycerin as a plasticizer; and thus characterize properties such as: permeability to water vapor, solubility, thickness, functional groups by FTIR, analysis of the morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mechanical properties. 9 mixtures combining different proportions of glycerol (1, 1.5 and 2 ml) with montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT) (0, 0.03 and 0.05 g) were prepared.

In 2013, there were 25.7 million stroke survivors and 6.5 million stroke-related deaths. Previous studies have indicated that approximately 40% of stroke survivors remain with functional impairments and need physical rehabilitation. However, many barriers could limit access to continuous physical rehabilitation for these patients, so devices that complement or assist in the rehabilitation process can be of great help. The quality, safety and efficacy of medical devices should be evaluated in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). However, the efficacy of many medical devices entering the market in the United States and the European Union (EU) has not been evaluated. Unproven post-stroke rehabilitation devices could be useless or even harmful to patients, thereby increasing healthcare costs. Previous studies have found that post-stroke rehabilitation devices without a rigorous evidence base...

The assignation of traffic flow to an urban transportation network can be done using Wardrop's equilibrium principle, which deals the election of travel routes by the users. This election is done under the hypothesis of uniform information to users based on the perception they have of a minimum travel costs between the travel origin-destination. According to this principle, in the network flow point, none of the users would improve their travel costs changing the route initially chosen unilaterally. The traffic flow in these conditions are called user's deterministic traffic flow. In this work, we consider interest of the network administrator in optimizing his investment as well as the interest of the users to minimize travel costs. In this case, it's necessary to formulate a model which picks both interest. This gave rise to a mathematical formulation in two levels. The second level on...

This paper presents a new approach for determining the functional business model required for the data model of the future automated system. The scope of this new scheme covers the typical business that requires information systems for business decision making. Patterns of functional areas of any enterprise are analyzed, reaching present standard schemes for each. These patterns are displayed and properly supported. Information Systems for life undergo a series of adjustments via maintenance. These changes generate many costs in time and money. The strategy to avoid this situation is to build on standard business models, which can be customized according to parameters in particular. In order to find the standard business model there are four basic functions Macro universally must be present in all areas of business. These macro functions are presented a...
