A comparative analysis will be carried out on the influence that four soil-structure interaction models have on the seismic performance of a five-story dual building composed of frames, reinforced concrete walls and isolated footings type foundations, whose initial premise states that these foundations are completely embedded in the ground. The methodologies selected for the comparison will be the D. D. Barkan - O. A. Savinov model, the A. E. Sargsian model, the model proposed by the Russian Standard SNIP 2.02.05-87 and the model proposed by the FEMA P-2091 manual in its sixth chapter. The data obtained from different measurement indicators will be compared, such as structural drifts, fundamental period, base shear, axial forces acting on a critical column and moments in a critical beam. At the end of the analysis, it was concluded that the SSI model that provides results that are most i...

Purpose – This paper aims to analyse the capital structure determining factors of Latin American and US corporations after the crisis of 2008, as a means of comparing theoretical assumptions and empirical results in markets of different efficiency levels. Design/methodology/approach – The study sample comprises 1,091 companies belonging to the six largest economies in Latin America plus the USA, in the years 2009 to 2013. The authors performed a regression with data from a balanced overview, which were obtained by using the criterion of minimum weighted square. Findings – The results demonstrated differences in determining factors of capital structure between companies from Latin America and from the USA. The pecking order theory was mostly observed in Latin American companies and the trade-off theory greater was closely aligned with US firms. Originality/value – This research br...

ABSTRACT Cassava, corn and potato starches were subjected to ozone processing under the same conditions, in order to allow comparisons. The molecular structure was evaluated using two chromatographic analyses: high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) coupled to multiangle laser light scattering (MALLS) and differential refractive index (RI) detectors, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Both proved the molecular depolymerization caused by ozonation, as well as illustrated the different behavior of each starch source – in special in relation to their molar mass dispersity. The granular morphology was not affected by ozone processing. On the other hand, the starch properties were affected by ozonation. In general, the apparent viscosity decreased during pasting, as well as the complex modulus (G*) of the immediately formed gels. After cooling and storage, however, the ...

Semiconductor-insulator interfaces play an important role in the performance of many different electronic and optoelectronic devices such as transistors, LEDs, lasers and solar cells. Particularly, the recombination of photo-generated charge carriers at interfaces in crystalline silicon solar cells causes a dramatic efficiency reduction. Therefore, during the fabrication process, the crystalline silicon must be subjected to prior superficial passivation; typically through an insulating layer such as SiO2, SiNx or AlOx. The function of this passivating layer is to reduce electrical recombination losses in interfacial defect states originating from dangling bonds. The associated passivation parameters are, on the one hand, stable charges within the insulating layer (Qox) that by repelling a certain type of charge carrier from the crystalline silicon surface, reduces its recombination effec...

In this investigation, the elasto-plastic behavior and the seismic performance of concrete reinforced frame structures reinforced are evaluated by applying the Pushover method. This evaluation is done on several cases: with high ductility steel (Grade 40), conventional steel (Grade 60) and high strength steel (Grade 75). For the previous, the capacity curve graph obtained from the displacement coefficient method was used to measure the capacity of the structure. In addition, the performance of the structure for different levels of seismic design are evaluated with the resulting values of ductility and rigidity of each case. The results showed that reinforcing a structure with a Grade 40 reinforcing steel increases the energy dissipation capacity, and if reinforced with a Grade 75 reinforcing steel increases the strength capacity in the structure. Finally, the comparative result of the va...

The Andes are classically considered to represent the type of orogenie chains resulting from the subduction of an oceanic plate beneath a continental plate. In spite of a considerable literature invoJving stratigraphie, paleogeographie, structural, magmatic and geophysical data, any model that convincingly ex plains the modality of the Andean surrection has been emerged. Ali the current models focused on the importance of the subducting plate and very few considerations on the heterogeneity of continental plate. Paleogeographie reconstructions, structural evidences and magmatic and metallogenic evolution of Southern Peruvian Western Cordillera and Northern Chi.lean Domeyko Cordillera are used to identify a structure that delineates two different lithospheric blocks.

Mud plasters or stuccos are commonly used to improve the moisture resistance of adobe structures. This study presents the results of a durability test program on mud plasters subjected to simulated rain. Different stabilizers were used, such as extracts from tuna leaves (a variety of cactus plants), banana leaves and stalks, locust bean tree pods, and manure. Test results of mud plasters stabilized with asphalt are presented for comparison. Experimental results showed that drying shrinkage cracking is one of the most important factors affecting the disintegration of soil stuccos. A procedure was developed to obtain a crack-resistant stucco composed of natural soil, coarse sand, straw, and a stabilizer extracted from the cactus plant. The stucco was found to be water-resistant.

The present and future challenges of the jurisdictional function are also those of the organizations that integrate the justice system and of society as a whole. A jurisdictional response or the response of these organizations alone will be insufficient. A systemic and holistic vision is needed for any policy or management. The education system, the economy and new technologies are three segments clearly committed, but in a transformative way: their communion allows outlining a jurisdictional structure with a different systemic insertion.

The objective of this study was to determine the anatomic reference points to perform a craniotomy in pigs. Forty four heads of Landrace, Pietrain, and creole pigs of 22-89 kg of body weight (males = 2, females = 22, castrated males = 20) were used. The four anatomic points under evaluation were P1: at a distance “a” from the external occipital protuberance (OP) to cranial; P2: at a distance “b” from the OP point to cranial; P3 and P4: equidistant, at a distance “c” to intersection point formed by imaginaries lines between supraorbitary apophysis (SA) and the frontal bones half line (LmhF). A 11 mm perforation drilling (cutting) was used in order to enter inside P1 and P2, and a hand piece was used for P3 and P4. The variables under evaluation were the length between the OP to the end of the nose, between both AS, P1 depth, between P1 and P3-P4, P2 and P3-P4. No statistical d...

The eggshell membrane (ESM) is a biopolymer network that may have potential applications in biomedicine, but it also may reveal important details regarding the behaviour of biopolymer networks. In this paper, we have studied the mechanical and morphological properties of the ESM in order to reveal important structure-property relationships. Light optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to assess the morphology of the ESM. The mechanical properties of membranes and individual fibres were studied by means of tensile tests and nanoindentation tests, respectively. The mechanical behaviour of ESM networks in different environmental conditions showed a non-linear and a linear regime. As for elastomers and other biopolymer systems, the non-linear regime was modelled by the Mooney-Rivlin relation. The Young's modulus in the linear regime of the network was related to the Young's...

Abstract We present the results of a questionnaire study in Belgium, Burkina Faso and Indonesia focusing on the problem of the just allocation of an indivisible good. The formal axioms proposed in social choice theory offer an attractive framework to structure the response patterns. Interindividual differences can be interpreted in a meaningful way in terms of basic intuitions about desert, efficiency and compensation. Belgian students are most resource-egalitarian, Burkinese students attach a large weight to innate capacities, Indonesian students focus on actual production. The crucial no-envy criterion is supported by a majority of respondents, but this majority becomes small if there is an unavoidable conflict between no-envy and the “responsibility” requirement of the stand-alone upper bound. We discuss the pros and cons of questionnaire-experimental studies as compared to large ...

Successful results of all types of professional activities largely depend on the quality of training. At present, however, the acquired knowledge does not guarantee a university graduate stability of success throughout his/her career. Thus, the concept of lifelong education was gradually formed. From the previously established stereotype “education for life”, society is moving to the “education throughout life”. The traditional division of a person’s active life into the period of professional activity and study is blurring. There is a need for a transition to continuing professional education throughout life. One of the most important tasks for the management is to ensure the continuous development and survival of the organizations. Such a task is also vital for the institutions of additional professional education. With the transition to the newly established market relations...
