It is reported the case of a pregnant Holstein cow with abdominal distension, depression, decrease in milk production. In the clinical examination ruminal hypermotility was observed, both in the regional inspection and in the auscultation of the rumen. In the exploratory puncture in the left paralumbar fossa, bubbles were observed, confirming the presence of foamy tympanism in the rumen. The clinical signs showed a picture compatible with the vagal indigestion syndrome. An exploratory laparotomy was performed to confirm the diagnosis and evaluation of the damage of the organ, and as a therapeutic measure, a rumenotomy was conducted to remove most of the ruminal content. After the surgical intervention, the physiological constants were restored. The animal showed remarkable improvement and ended the pregnancy successfully.

The study aimed to evaluate the rates of visual oestrous and conception in Saanen goats subjected to oestrus synchronization at two seasons of the year. Hormonal synchronization was done using an intravaginal sponge impregnated with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP), for 11 days. In addition, 48 hours before sponge removal, 300 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) and 125 µg cloprostenol were administered. The goats that showed heat were mounted by fertile males. The pregnancy diagnosis was done 60 days after the service by transrectal ultrasound. The rate of presentation of heat was 86.7 and 96.7% for the anoestrous season (January-February) and the cyclicity season (March-April), respectively, without significant difference between periods. The conception rate was 88.5 and 62.1% for the periods January-February and March-April, respectively (p<0.05). It is concluded that the use ...

The 2016 Mw 6.1 Parina earthquake ruptured a shallow-crustal normal fault within the high Andes of south Peru. We use high-resolution DEMs and field mapping of the surface ruptures generated by the earthquake, in combination with co-seismic and post-seismic InSAR measurements, to investigate how different features of the geomorphology at Parina are generated by the earthquake cycle on the Parina Fault. We systematically mapped 12 km of NW-SE trending surface ruptures with up to ~27 cm vertical displacement and ~25 cm tensional opening along strike, separated by a gap with no observable surface ruptures. Co- and post-seismic InSAR measurements require slip below this gap in surface ruptures, implying that surface offsets observed in paleoseismic trenches may not necessarily be representative of slip at seismogenic depths, and will typically yield an underestimate of paleo-earthquake magni...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenotypic characteristics of the Creole cattle of the Huascarán National Park (PNH), Ancash, Peru through zoometric measurements and indexes of productive interest. The study was conducted in a population of Creole cattle in the Llanganuco zone of the PNH. Data were collected from 32 cows bovines. The zoometric measurements were head width (AC), head length (LC), chest girth (PT), body length (LCU), height withers (ALC) and height at the rump (ALG), anterior rump width (AAG), rear rump with (APG) and rump length (LG). Indexes related to meat ability were calculated: transversal pelvic index (IPT) and longitudinal pelvic index (IPL), and ethnological indexes: anamorphosis index (AI), corporal index (IC), pelvic index (PI) and proportionality index (IPR). The data were processed with the statistical program R. The colour and pattern of the coat w...

The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (Cusco, Peru) is one of the most important archaeological monuments in Peru and worldwide. Machu Picchu is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site and at risk from climatic change. However, the seismic centennial history of Peru reports large earthquakes generated both along the subduction zone (Mw8) and on active crustal faults along the Andean Cordillera (Mw7). It is therefore important to know if Machu Picchu is located in an area of seismic hazard and then to take measures to mitigate potential seismic hazards. Due to the short historical earthquake catalogue (< 500 years) and the absence of significant recent instrumental seismicity in the site’s vicinity (radius of < 30 km), our knowledge about the seismic hazard in Machu Picchu is limited. The earthquakes of 1650 and 1950 affected Cusco city and surrounding areas, but without damage desc...

This paper presents and discusses the clinical and pathological findings of an outbreak of neonatal diarrhea that caused a high mortality in a dairy farm in Lima, Peru. The diarrheas did not respond to antibiotics and occurred in calves less than one month old. The animals showed signs of dehydration, fluid feces, fever and marked depression of sensory. They were negative for coronavirus and rotavirus but were positive for Criptosporidium sp. In the post mortem study, a severe diffuse acute mucohemorrhagic enterocolitis was found and the histopathological diagnosis corroborated that it was a severe acute diffuse catarrhal enteritis associated with Cryptosporidium sp and bacterial nests. In the barn was found deficiencies in the management of colostrum and hygiene of the containers in which the milk was offered to the calves. The problem was solved introducing a series of good practices i...

The aim of this study was to molecularly and serologically identify Salmonella spp present in isolates from avian eggs, carcasses, and viscera. In total, 46 isolates of avian origin identified as Salmonella spp were evaluated through cultures and biochemical tests in the period 2012-2017 from various districts of Lima. These isolates are kept in the Bacteriology Laboratory stock of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. The strains were reactivated, and suspicious Salmonella spp colonies were reconfirmed by culturing on selective media. Subsequently, the PCR was performed on the suspicious samples as a method of genetic diagnosis of Salmonella. The invasiveness gene invA, a gene involved with the virulence of Salmonella, was detected. Serotyping was performed with polyvalent and monovalent antisera for serogroup and serovar in the Enteropathogens Laboratory of the National Institu...

Postoperative complications after intestinal anastomosis remain the main concern in abdominal surgery in horses. The aim of this study was to describe an end-to-end jejunal anastomosis with a mesenteric flap covering technique and its macroscopic and postoperative histological characteristics. This technique is based on a reinforcement to the conventional surgery performed with a simple interrupted suture pattern to prevent postoperative complications. Five previously premedicated horses with xylazine 0.5 mg/kg, acepromazine 0.03 mg/kg and tramadol 2 mg/kg were induced to general anesthesia with diazepam 0.25 mg/kg and ketamine 2.2 mg/kg. General anesthesia was maintained with a minimum alveolar concentration of 1.4 ± 0.2% of isoflurane. A midline abdominal wall approach was made. A 10 cm jejunal segment was selected for resection and end-to-end anastomosis. A mesenteric flap large enou...
