Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease primarily of humans which produces high morbidity and mortality. Dogs are also susceptible to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections; therefore, the present study searched for evidence of the presence of this pathogen in 58 dogs that live with human pulmonary TB patients in Lima, Peru. Chest Xray was performed and pharyngeal swab, saliva, bronchial fluid, urine and feces samples were taken from dogs. Fluorescence microscopy was performed with auramine O staining and TB culture by the Löwenstein Jensen and the Microscopic Observation Drug Susceptibility (MODS) methods. Epidemiological data was collected to define the patient-pet relationship. The custom of spitting on the floor of the house, the dog licking patient’s sputum and the affective contact with the pet were practices identified during the study that might facilitate the transmission o...

Proteases are the most important group of industrial enzymes and they can be used in several fields including biorefineries for the valorization of industrial byproducts. In this study, we purified and characterized novel extremophilic proteases produced by a Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain isolated from Mauritia flexuosa palm swamps soil samples in Peruvian Amazon. In addition, we tested their ability to hydrolyze distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) protein. Three alkaline and thermophilic serine proteases named EI, EII, and EIII with molecular weight of 35, 40, and 55 kDa, respectively, were purified. EI and EIII were strongly inhibited by EDTA and Pefabloc being classified as serine-metalloproteases, while EII was completely inhibited only by Pefabloc being classified as a serine protease. In addition, EI and EII exhibited highest enzymatic activity at pH 8, while EIII at pH 11...

All Idiomarina species are isolated from saline environments; microorganisms in such extreme habitats develop metabolic adaptations and can produce compounds such as proteases with an industrial potential. ARDRA and 16S rRNA gene sequencing are established methods for performing phylogenetic analysis and taxonomic identification. However, 16S-23S ITS is more variable than the 16S rRNA gene within a genus, and is therefore, used as a marker to achieve a more precise identification. In this study, ten protease producing Idiomarina strains isolated from the Peruvian salterns were characterized using biochemical and molecular methods to determine their bacterial diversity and industrial potential. In addition, comparison between the length and nucleotide sequences of a 16S-23S ITS region allowed us to assess the inter and intraspecies variability. Based on the 16S rRNA gene, two species of I...

Social networks have become a space used by contemporary social movements, which have found in them a place for the practice of cyberactivism. The objective of this research is to analyze the interaction generated around the publications on Instagram with the hashtag #MeGustaLaVidaSocial, a phenomenon that originated as a result of a complaint on social networks in October 2020. The methodology used in the study is based on the qualitative approach through the technique of content and thematic analysis of the publications made on Instagram. The research allowed us to know the communicative practices, visibility and reach, frames and values and affinity and support that were generated around the phenomenon. Finally, we concluded that the interaction generated enabled a space where users shared their experiences based on gender-based violence; in addition to being a potential niche for pub...

This research project seeks to improve soil properties through experimentation with geotechnical purposes. For this, will be used natural volcanic pozzolana in 5%, 10%, 15% and brick dust in 10% giving it a second reuse. The soil improvement will be analyzed with the proposed additions and its influence on the results. It is concluded that the addition improves the behavior of the soil by decreasing its plasticity index, increases the compaction index and improves the geotechnical parameters.

This document studies the stabilization of the soil used as a subgrade, by adding locally available materials such as rice husk ash (RHA) and sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA). These aggregates were added to the soil in substitution by weight between 5%, 7.5% and 10%. By adding these, the expansiveness is reduced while the maximum dry density increases, in addition the tendency of CBR is increasing and then tends to decrease proportionally to the addition of the aforementioned aggregates. This indicates a peak in CBR and expandability. The best result obtained from CBR was 33.75% with the 5% replacement mixtures.

Canine histopathological records from de Pathology Laboratory of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, during the period of 1995-2006 were evaluated for determining the frequency of neoplasias in relation to sex, age, breed, cellular origin, and localization. Out of 4438 canine records, 1092 corresponded to neoplasia (24.6%). Higher tumoral frequency was found in age groups of 5 to <9 (37.1%) and ≥9 (35.6%) years old. None differences were found due to sex, but the Boxer breed was the most affected (12.1%). Malignant neoplasias were most frequent (64.9%) than benign ones, where the transmissible venereal tumor was the most frequent benign tumor and the mammary adenocarcinoma was the most frequent malign tumor. Skin and subcutaneous tissue (39.5%) and mammary gland (16.7%) were the most common sites for neoplasias.

There are various causes that can originate an extended class III: carcinoma, epithelial hyperplasia, trichomoniasis, nonspecific colpitis, pregnancy, vaginal atrophy, ectrapionitis. In the presence of an extended III it is necessary to make a careful examination of the neck (colposcopy examination flow, etc.) and perform directed biopsy in the presence of any suspicious image. Being the most frequent cause widespread trichomoniasis, yet we must not discard their possible association with carcinoma (two cases in our statistics) and make a colposcopic examination of the neck and repeat cytology once cured the condition.

A new gridded rainfall dataset available for Peru is introduced, called PISCOp V2.1 (Peruvian Interpolated data of SENAMHI’s Climatological and Hydrological Observations). PISCOp has been developed for the period 1981 to the present, with an average latency of eight weeks at 0.1° spatial resolution. The merging algorithm is based on geostatistical and deterministic interpolation methods including three different rainfall sources: (i) the national quality-controlled and infilled raingauge dataset, (ii) radar-gauge merged precipitation climatologies and (iii) the Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation (CHIRP) estimates. The validation results suggest that precipitation estimates are acceptable showing the highest performance for the Pacific coast and the western flank of the Andes. Furthermore, a meticulous quality-control and gap-infilling procedure allowed us to reduce the forma...

Microbial proteases are widely used as commercial enzymes, which have an active role in several industrial processes. The aim of this study was to investigate the production and properties of extracellular proteases from Barrientosiimonas sp. strain V9. The cultivation conditions for protease production were studied using different carbon and nitrogen sources. Maximum protease production was obtained in medium containing 25 g L?1 sucrose, 7 g L?1 KNO3, and initial pH 7.0 at 35 °C and 150 rpm during 72 h. Under these conditions, maximum proteolytic activity reached 1200 U mL?1. The enzyme extract showed optimum activity at 60 °C, pH 9.0, and was stable from 30 to 50 °C within a pH range from 4.0 to 10.0 and NaCl concentration up to 2.5 M. The enzyme was stable in the presence of EDTA, urea, Triton X-100 and laundry detergent (sodium lauryl sulfate as main component). The addition of 1%...
